Chapter 2: A spell is just a seed, literally.

Dreue spent a long time looking at the book in his hand.

"Thomme said the pages are blank, he was dead serious about, it seems he truly can't see a word, is there a problem with Thomme sight, or am I the only one who can read this book?"

Dreue left the library carrying two books, one was the ancient book from section E, the other was a regular book about spell casting. While walking on the campus of the Stremreth academy, he randomly bumped into a student so that the books fell on the ground.

"I am very sorry! My sight has been very bad lately, are you hurt anywhere?"

"I am ok, no problem"

"Wait please! I was carrying two books one about spell casting, and another empty book, I want to give it to the equipment craft department so that they translate the spell casting book into the empty book in the Havardr language so that I can read it, I don't want to mix things up, can you mark each book for me? Or perhaps put the empty book in my right hand, and the other book in my left hand"

"Here you go, glad to help"

.....

After the student left, Dreue opened the book in his right hand, and as expected he somewhat can read, his lips curved into a slight smell.

Dreue spent several weeks reading books from section E, he was able to read most of them except for 3 books, 2 which were incomprehensible because half of the text was missing and the last one was completely empty.

"Spells are the product of infusing mana into a spell circle whether the circle was drawn on an enchanted object such as a sward or scroll, or formed by a mage in the process of casting"

"You learn the spell circle or buy a spell scroll, you infuse it with a specific amount of mana, the spell will be casted as a final product"

"Mages train to shorten the casting time, cast multiple spells at the same time…etc."

"But most of them won't able to modify a spell in anyway, like for example the fireball spell, for small amount of mana you can create a fireball in your hand and send it flying at a target, if you want more destructive, more area effect or longer distance, you would simply choose another spell, that's why fireball spell Is only used by beginner mages"

"Just like a farmer, he plants the seeds in the ground, water them, take care of them and then harvest the crop like wheat, the type of the final product is already determined at the time of planting the seeds, the farmer either succeeds in growing the wheat or fail, it is absolutely impossible for him to grow barely."

"No matter what he does he will never be able to change the type of the crops, yeah I mean with better care he will gain a higher quality of crop but that will not change the type of it"

"But what if instead of buying seeds from the market, he created his own one? What of instead of choosing from what's available he creates what he needs?"

Dreue closed the book in his hand, lost in thoughts. In the library no sound could be heard while in his mind a storm just has started.

.....

"Now what?"

Dreue sit in his room thinking about his next course of action.

"There are still some books left that I have yet to read, but what about the 2 books which I still can't read? let alone that empty book"

"I have a theory that the worse my sight, the better I see the words in these books, I have to evidence its just a feeling. In the end I have nothing to lose I will lose my sight totally eventually; it won't make a difference if it happened a little faster"

Next day, Dreue bought 2 low level acid potions and 2 recovery potions.

"I only need to get my sight worse, so there is no need to drink it, I will pour it directly into my right eye in addition I will be able to avoid the harmful effect on my body and mana core. It's very weak so it might take more than just one try"

Dreue grabbed both the bottles with his hands, carefully poured little acid on his right eye, after that he immediately poured some recovery potion on his eye, he also drank a mouthful of it. His cries echoed in the boy's dormitory.

"Dreue are you ok?"

Some students came knocking on his door.

"We heard a cry from your room?"

"I am ok a just fell and my head hit the table"

"Open the door for us"

"I SAID I AM OK, JUST LEAVE ME ALONE"

"What a rude guy, just leave him be, soon the academy will have no place for him"

Dreue resumed his work after heard their steps walking away. Finally, several hours later, when the first bottle of acid become empty, he started to see more word with his right eye.

"I will call it a day and continue tomorrow"

Next day at the library, Dreue used all the potions he had. His right eye looked horrible.

"I can read almost half of the word in each page of these two books, but have yet to see a word in the last book"

"More than 2 months have passed since the start of this academic year; it seems that I have no choice but to submit for a drop year"

"I need to buy more potions, I still have some money but it won't be enough, I will barrow some from Thomme, we used to be close friends, I will try to more money from the head master. I will visit a pawn shop in the Rosevale town after leaving the academy"

….

"Dreueeeeeeeee, why did you apply for year drop??? You had 71 points and only needed 29 more. Now you have start from zero again you idiot!!!"

"I know Thomme, but in the current situation I will not be able to earn 10 in year let alone 29. I can no longer take even the simplest quests. My mana core level is stuck at level 2. What do you expect me to do? I want to use this year to clear my mind maybe the path of the magus is not meant for me. That aside can you lend me some money?"

"Sigh… perhaps this is for the best. Here, you take this bag of coins. No need to pay me back. Consider it a parting gift."

"Thank you Thomme, I will not forget your help and care, I will return the favor someday. I will pay the headmaster a visit and leave after that."

….

"So, you decided to leave young man"

"Yes headmaster, I want to take break and clear my mind and sort somethings with my family"

"sigh… I don't know what to say… to return to your family in this condition… and it seems your right eye is badly hurt"

"I have been reading in the library for a long time searching for a cure to disease, I used the money you give me to buy ingredients and brew a potion. I poured it directly into my right eye, I had no hope to cure my mana core but at least I thought I might recover some of my sight. Alas my research was a failure..."

"That aside headmaster. Please give me some money. I can't face my family blind and poor. I want to develop my family land a bit and live of it. I will pay you back for your care someday if fate allows it"

….

After a while, in the main office. A young women came reporting in. she was in early twenties with black long hair and similarly sharp black eyes. Her black robe was in strong contrast to her pale skin.

"Headmaster, Dreue left the academy"

"Finally, the story ended here, we have no more reason to worry about being discovered"

"I am puzzled by the fact that he took just one year drop, why did he not drop of the academy permanently he would receive more money as a compensation for his sight"

"Does he want to postpone the compensation for the next year in hopes of receiving more?"

"Does he think he can make a comeback? Is it truly just a young man foolishness? I should check on him once in while".
