Chapter 1: Prologue

Four years ago

Today was the big day.

I was finally fifteen. It was the official age in which all supernaturals were classified and sent away to prestigious academies based on our species; sorcerers like me awakened their powers around this time. My friends told me I would probably be a blood sorcerer or even a fire mage! They probably assumed it because of the blood-red eyes that I inherited from my father.

Whatever it was, I was so excited!

But mum was nervous. I did not know why. She kept giving me reassuring smiles whenever I asked, but I could feel that she was not feeling well. She also looked paler than usual.

Her deep blue eyes did not shine as bright as they always did and looked sunken. The glossy black hair that I inherited from her looked limp and unkempt. She looked as if she had not gotten a proper sleep and had cried all night.

Something was off.

Seeing as she had no intention of telling me what was wrong, I looked out the window of our limo as we sped across the streets to reach the Arcane Headquarters. Everything was a blur outside, but I had nothing else to do. The limo came to a sudden stop. The chauffeur opened the door for my mum. She got off first and held a hand to escort me. I gladly took it since I was nervous after sensing so many powerful presences.

We walked to the entrance, where other families stood with the guards at the door. The Arcane Headquarters was a magnificent structure. I gasped when I saw the sunlight glinting off the obsidian walls, making it look like the famed Spire of Darkness, the tower of the night fae they built it after.

The crowd immediately made a path when they noticed my mother. She was the granddaughter of the current Grand Sorceror, after all. The gathered fell into a hushed silence as we walked towards the door to the great hall. I tried to pull my hand from my mum as we reached the doorway since she was not allowed inside, but she held it tightly.

"Mum, everything will be alright. What are you worried about?" I asked, gently pulling my hand from hers. She looked as if she desperately wanted to tell me something but stopped herself.

"Cressinda, just remember one thing. No matter what happens inside, your mum will be there for you. So do not be afraid, and you should not show your fear to them. Do you understand?"

I nodded, even though I was confused.

"Now, go on inside and break the ring you wear if something dangerous happens," She said and embraced me. I returned the hug.

"I'll be back soon, mum," I said and entered the great hall. As I looked at my mother one last time before the ceremony started, the heavy black doors closed behind me. The tears in her eyes made me want to run back to her, but it was already too late. The doors closed, and in front of me stood two guardians ready to escort me to where the awakening ceremony would be held.

The guardians silently escorted me to a large room. I saw all the elders from each of the supernaturals, except the vampires and necromancers, seated there.

"Crescinda Crimson, daughter of Valenia Crimson," the herald announced as he spotted me. I entered the room and walked to the center with my head held high, where the evaluator stood as countless eyes followed my movements. The blonde-haired man, who looked to be in his early thirties, gave me a kind smile before taking my hands in his. A bright light flashed, and his eyes turned milky. His grip on my hand became so tight suddenly that I almost screamed from the pain.

What the hell was going on?

His grip then loosened, and he fell to the ground like a puppet whose strings were cut off. Some elders rushed to the evaluator and touched his forehead. One of them stood up with a spiteful expression and looked at me with a sneer.

"Vampire," He hissed. Loud murmurs went up at that, and the guardians who escorted me started to approach me with magical chains in their hands.

I started to panic and could not get my head around what was happening. A vampire? Was I one of those frightful beings? So this was what mum meant. I quickly buried my thoughts and broke the ring I wore in my right hand.

A bright crimson flash was the last thing I saw before I lost consciousness.

Okay, I know that the prologue isn't all that exciting but I promise things will take off from the first chapter, trust me. This is just kind of setting the stage and giving you a glimpse of what kind of world the MC lives in before we get into the story. Love you all, do comment to let me know what you think about it <3
