Chapter 1: Meet Jaz and the Orphans

 Jaz's P.O.V.

HI! I'm Jasmine but prefer Jaz and I am a orphan. Why you ask? Well it started six years ago when was four and my parents dropped me off here for no reason. I never remember anything good memories when I was with my parents. They used to call me stuff like "brat" and words i'm not supposed to say. I don't know why but I kind off want my parents to adopt me and we can start fresh. I've been waiting for six years and now i'm ten. I've been stuck at Miss. Rose's orphanage ever since. I've became friends with most of the orphans. Right now there are four other orphans other then me Ella, Daisy, Lizzy, and Gwen. We all are very close except for Gwen because she's the oldest and feels like she needs to have friends her own age, but she treats all of us like a big sister. I'm going to tell you about our back stories so you are not confused and know us and our personalities.

My name is Jaz and i've been in this orphanage for six years. My parents just left me here for no reason which can traumatizing for any child. It was pretty clear my parents never wanted to have any children which really hurts. They never did anything fun with me and I stayed locked in my room for most of the time. They rarely gave me food so I would have to sneak out when they were either sleeping which was most of the time and when they left me home alone. I had to spend my birthday and Christmas by myself which is pretty sad. The only thing I have to remember them by is half a locket and a letter saying they would come back for me which I have been waiting for all these years and I believe that they will come Gwen says they will not. I'm a very positive person and have a upbeat personality and very rebellious as well. It can be very hard for me to trust anyone in my life. Glee is my escape I watch it any chance that I get and dream to be Rachel because I want to be a big Broadway singer as well.

Gwen is the oldest one of all us and has been here the longest. She's been here for 11 years and is pretty used to the orphanage life. Her dad used to abuse her and her mom when she was a baby. Her mom died in a car accident and she didn't feel safe around her dad. One night when her dad came home and she knew what was going to happen so she grabbed the phone and locked herself in her room. He went to jail and stayed for a long time. One time he escaped and came here and it terrified her and he got caught and is back in jail. She is very bossy and pushes us around but at the same time she can be a mother for us which helps Daisy because she at least has someone to care about her here and be her mother figure. Gwen is 13 and wants to have friends her own age and that causes some trouble because outside of school we are not allowed to be outside the real world. I always find a way to escape because i'm always curious and want to explore.

Daisy is the only orphan right now that actually had nice parents and that cared about her. They died in a tragic car accident a year and a half ago. She had no family to take care of her so she was sent here. She is the youngest out of all of us and was the last one to arrive. She was very emotional and cried all the time because she was scared and didn't understand what was happening which I can relate to because I was kind of like that when I arrived. It's taken her a few months to get used to the orphanage life and Gwen was very caring to her. Now Daisy is a firecracker and has tons of energy she still cries once a while but not often. She enjoys singing maybe even though she falls asleep during the middle of the song and "it's a hard - knock life" even though she barely understands what that means. She believes that she will be adopted even though people rarely come here to adapt.

Ella is my age and my best friend here. Her parents never wanted any children so they sent her here when she was just a baby. I feel bad for her because she never got to meet or know her parents. Every child should be able to know who their parents are. It makes sense though because her parents were still in high school then and couldn't afford to take care of her and deal with school as well. She had already been here when I was dropped off here and we connected. She has a great personality and crazy like me. We always invent these games which helps when we are bored and she is a gleek as well. We have the similar interests like watching glee and singing. I don't know what I would do without her. I know that we are going to be best friends for life. She is going to be my future children's god mother and I am going to be her future children's godmother as well. We would take a bullet for each other and our friendship is unstoppable.

Lizzy is the second youngest in the orphanage with her being 7. She was also the third person dropped off here. Her parents had abused her physically and emotionally. She had hated being at home and always knew what was coming for her. She would hide all around the house but her parents would always find her and beat her. It had traumatized her for life and occasionally has flashbacks. She had screamed so loud once it alarmed her neighbors and her parents were arrested and she was dropped of her by her neighbors. She was very quiet and shy when she first got here and after a few of being at the orphanage she became more open to us. She is a very bright seven year old and is quite a chatterbox which we are surprised she has never lost her voice before. She loves singing and wants to be adopted so she can experience having a mom and dad again. It has been hard for her trust adults because of what her mom and dad did to her.

The orphanage can be hard at times. Miss, Rose is very mean and doesn't care about us. She tells us that she used to be a singer which is hard to believe because she is a very awful singer and we usually cover our ears when she sings. She usually drinks at night and it can be hard for us because she is supposed to be in charge of us and we need a grownup to look up to and she is clearly not it. She makes us spend hours to clean the place and make it spotless. We usually make a game out of it by singing "It's a hard -knock life" which describes being a orphan very much. I have to escape every once a while to go out to the real world and bring the girls real food. Miss Rose barely feeds us and we are usually starving. It's very hard to look for food when you don't have any money.

It's night time right now and Miss. Rose is passed out right now. Which is usual for her and we getting ready for bed which is our usual nightgowns since we have no money to get new ones. We are usually freezing since we barely have no heat since Miss. Rose hasn't been paying the electricity bill for years. Our room is pretty small considering there is two bunk beds and a couch that turns into a bed. Lizzy, Ella , and Daisy are huddled at one of the bottom bunks and reading this note my parents had left. We always read it before bed and it makes me wonder about them. I mean, if you were an orphan you would wonder about your parents like me? All of us wonder except for maybe Gwen and we talk about what we would picture them if they were nicer. Daisy is the only one of us that had nice parents, but they died in a tragic car accident. I started singing the song that I always sing at night and the girls are singing with me even Gwen.

"Maybe far away,

Or maybe real near by.

He may be pouring her coffee,

She may be straightening his tie.

Maybe in a house ,

All hidden in a hill.

She's sitting playing piano,

He's sitting paying the bills .

Betcha their young.

Betcha their smart.

Bet they collect things like ashtrays and art.

Betcha their good.

Why shouldn't they be?

Their one mistake was giving up on me.

So, maybe now it's time,

And maybe when I wake.

They'll be there calling me "baby",

Maybe.

Betcha he reads,

Betcha she sews.

Maybe she's made me a closet full of clothes!

Maybe their strict,

As straight as line.

Don't really care as long as they're mine!

So, maybe now this prayer's,

The last of it's kind.

Won't you please, come for your baby

maybe...

As we finished singing Daisy had fallen asleep on the bunk so we set her bed and carefully placed her on the bed. I felt bad for her because she looked so innocent and shouldn't really be here. Her relatives refused to care for her and couldn't really so she was sent here. Daisy was the last one of us that was sent here and when she came here she was really scared being here and cried every night. We would sing "maybe" every night and that would calm her down. No five year old kid should go through this, but she is starting to understand about being an orphan. She has definitely changed since she had came here and becoming more outgoing then she was. She would cry every once in a while and have flashbacks, but that's it. We all treat Daisy like she is our younger sister even Gwen.

Miss Rose always makes us get up at the bright of dawn even on weekends which is annoying. Today was Friday which means after school it was the weekend. We started daily chores which takes us hours to do and we are late for school all the time because of all the chores which our teachers usually don't mind because they understand what we are going through.I would like for once if we weren't late because we miss some important stuff going on. We are actually lucky to be going to school because most orphans don't go to school which I feel should change because every kid deserves to be educated. There are some countries that are to poor to even allow school as well which is kind of sad for me. Every child should be able to go to school it diesn't matter if they are poor or not. Some children are home schooled which is great that they are getting an education. We started singing "it's a hard-knock life" which describes our life at the orphanage.

"It's a hard knock life

It's a hard knock life

It's a hard-knock life for us

It's a hard-knock life for us

Steada treated,

We get tricked

Steada kisses,

We get kicked

It's a hard-knock life!

Got no folks to speak off, so

It's a hard knock life we hoe

Cotton blankets.. steady wool

Empty bellies...steda full

It's a hard-knock life

Don't it feel like the wind is always hollowing?

Don't it seem like there's never any light?

Once a day, do you wanna throw a towel in?

It's easier then putting up a fight

No one's there when your dreams get creepy

No one cares if you grow...or if you shrink

No one cries when your eyes get all wet and weepy

From all the crying you would think this place would stink

Ohh..ohh

Empty belly life! (empty belly life)

Rotten smelly life! (No no no no no)

Full of sorrow life! (full of sorrow life...)

No tomorrow life!

Santa Claus we never see...

Santa Claus who's that? Who's he?

No one cares about you a smidge

When you're in a orphanage

It's a hard-knock life for us

It's a hard-knock life for us

No one cares about you a smidge

When you're in a orphanage

It's a hard-knock life

It's a hard-knock life

It's a hard-knock life!

When we were finished we quickly had breakfast which was toast and we ran out to go to school. Gwen goes to middle school but she drops us off first at our school and makes sure Daisy and Lizzy get in to their classes safely. We ran as fast as we could like we usually do, but our school is 1 mile away so it's kind of hard to get to school on time. We reached our school as soon as they were calling the kids to come in for morning recess so we actually made it this time. Ella high fived each other and Gwen was waving at us while helping Daisy and Lizzy find their classes. Our teacher was surprised to actually see us at school at time for once and we went to our seats.

"I'm glad you came on time for once girls." He said sitting down next to us

"We got our chores done on time." I said

"That's great." He said and stood up to start class.

After school we didn't get any homework which we usually don't get on the weekends so Ella Daisy and Lizzy were wandering around and Gwen caught up to us and smiled. She is usually in a good mood on the weekends which is good because I like it when she's happy. You never ant to get on her bad side or talk to her when she's mad which she rarely is now. We were just walking and my stomach groweled which caused us to laugh. Gwen stopped and thought for a second.

"Let's go get some hot chocolate and pastries." Gwen said walking us to a coffee shop

"Yeah!" We cheered we usually did this after school on Friday which is refreshing because it's winter and very cold.

"Will we get adopted before Christmas?" Asked Daisy realizing it's two weeks before Christmas I stopped and thought

"I'm sure that we will. I'm kind of tired of not celebrating Christmas."

"Yeah 11 years without Christmas is pretty sad." Gwen said

"Let's go before we get whipped by Miss. Rose." Said Ella

"Yes." Lizzy said shuddering.

"It's okay." Gwen said hugging her and Lizzy jumped on her back while Daisy jumped on mine laughing. We decided to throw out our cups before we went in and we heard a dog bark and some boys were chasing him. I dropped Daisy and ran after the boys because they tied a couple of cans on the dogs tail and that's like abusing the dog. I feel very strongly about this and feel like that animals should not get abused or neglected. I approached the boys and threw one punch at one making him fall down and the boys ran. The dog ran away and I ran to it. I found myself facing a dog kennel truck and wouldn't let him get to the pound.

"Who's this dog?" He asked with anger

"He's mine." I said

"Where is his licence and leash." He asked

"He's a service dog for my dad who's blind and I forgot to get his leash and license today."

"Call him by his name." He said

"The dogs name?" I asked

'Yes the dogs name."

I thought for a moment and came up with a good name "Here Sandy." I said a few times and he came to me. I was faced by a cop after and it was the same cop that I run into every time I run away and he sent me to the orphanage which Miss. Rose was acting all loving about me and I sent Sandy in with the girls while I was outside with Miss. Rose and the cop. I was pretty sure that I was going to get whipped and I tried to run but Miss. Rose grabbed onto me and grabbed the whip I closed my eyes and she started to whip me then I blacked out.
