Chapter 9: Written Exam
After a few minutes of rest were given to the winners of the recent spars, to be completely honest quite a few needed them, we were all moved towards another building a few hundred meters away. It was a simple white building of just one story, and we were guided into it one by one to keep order and cheaters from preparing any kind of tricks.
When my turn came, I followed the teacher in charge. He was a handsome young man that wore formal clothing an a pair of thick glasses. A few of the other people were quite interested in him, but he seemed to not mind it at all.
I shrugged those toughts away from my mind when I was directed to enter a room and sit down. It was a single desk and a single chair, with a pen and a few pieces of paper on top of the desk as well. I went along with the instructions and sat down on the chair, the same teacher that guided me inside stepped to the front of the room and simply stood there for a few seconds before giving me a nod.
I took it was a signal to start the exam itself, and so I finally looked down and grabbed the pen, starting to fill the first of the papers placed in the desk in front of me. The first one had a general knowledge theme, which meant most of it depended completely on what Siegfried had implanted inside my mind.
So I started to focus on it and the answers started to appear clearly in my head for me to write them down. It was similar to how you would remember random stuff during an actual test, but instead of useless bullshit, what came to mind where simple and precise answers. I also took a mental note to write it down later on some kind of journal so that I don't cheat like this again.
So it continued with a steady and almost rythmic pace. Soon enough, I had finished the exam in what I guessed was average timing and handed the papers to the teacher. He told me I was dismissed until the results were published a few hours later, and I was free to waste my time in the courtyard until then.
His response felt a little odd since I was pretty sure most of the ones who were done with the exams were already walking out of the main gate, but I decided to follow orders and stick around until the results were published. I spent most of my time doing stretches and looking around for anything interesting enough to fight boredom.
I ended up poking little bugs with a stick, walking around in circles and checking out how much information did Siegfried implanted on me, and I have to say it was too much to remind it through regular means. At least I had something to do with my free time once more, so I was thankful for that as well.
Anyways, time went by and eventually the results were published. Those who left also had returned, so we were formed up in lines and we were allowed to go one by one to check how we did on the exams.
"This....I wasn't expecting."
I spoke out of pure surprise, and you would certainly understand, since my name was on first place at the top of both exams. I had, apparently, scored a perfect on the written exams, and basically obliterated my opponent on the physical one. But still...I was hoping the other students were better than me at least at one of those.
I awkwardly moved following the instructions we were given, but many glares were placed on me. I was pretty sure some of those were out of respect, but certainly I could feel some bloodlust being directed towards me, out of instinct, my body moved on its own and I ended up letting go for a few seconds and I glared back at them for a bit.
I stopped immediatly when I heard a few people falling to the ground, so I quickly walked away directly towards the exit. And just as I was stepping out, I noticed Arthur waiting for me, or so I guessed since he smiled a lot when he saw me again.
"So, how was it?"
"....I feel really awkward when others glare at me like that."
"Oh, don't worry about that! I'm sure that they will start respecting you very soon, and if they don't, just tell me and I'll take care of it!"
"By the way, why are you so eager to help me?"
"Well...You remind me of myself when I was younger, and also, for some reason I feel like you are very reliable."
"I see...Thanks Arthur, I really appreciate it."
"Of course. Now go and rest, get your things and come tomorrow at dawn! You don't wanna be late on your first day, right?!"
"Yes, Sir!"
"Good. Now go!"
For some reason Arthur felt...Oddly familiar. And as I was walking towards the inn, it finally clicked. He reminded me a lot of how Siegfried talked to me when we had the meeting. I smiled a little to myself and continued on my way to the inn.
Then, I had the 8 pm meal and finally went to bed straight away. The nerves kept me awake for a little longer, but I ended up falling asleep after around half an hour of laying in bed. I woke up before dawn and I put my things inside my briefcase and went downstairs.
I left a note on the counter, telling them that I wouldn't be using the room anymore and that it would be best for them to keep the rest of the money I paid for it since I wouldn't be using it either. Obviously, I also left the key there since it wouldn't make any sense if I kept it with me while not using the room.
I walked to the main gate and was received by two guards that were wearing a fairly simple black uniform, with some metal plating. They had a musket each and a shortsword. I thought maybe it was too much equipment for simple guards, but taking into account the fact that this place in specific had so much important information inside, I changed my mind pretty quickly.
They seemed to recognize me somehow since they gave me a nod before oppening the main gate for me to enter. Thus, I walked inside and followed the instructions from a similar uniformed guard that only had a shortsword in his waist and a list on his hands.
"North building. Room 001. Third floor."
"Thanks."
"O-Oh....No problem..."
For some reason the man looked away and repplied in a somewhat nervous manner. I wondered why for a few moments before following his directions and heading straight towards what would be my room until I graduated.
When I arrived, I could tell the difference from the inn I was using before. In simple terms, it was beautiful. Certainly what you would expect from a place filled with nobles and rich people. It was constructed with what I recognized as...Cement? Well, that was a big surprise. It was painted white and it ressembled the marble the main building was constructed from. It had a king sized bed and a clean wooden desk. The desk had some books placed over it, alongside some notebooks as well.
The room also had a pair of giant windows that illuminated everything perfectly. There was also a closet, which had a single uniform. It was white and it had golden ornaments. I figured it was the Academy's uniform so I left it there for now. After getting a little used to the room, I proceeded to unload my clothes and place them on the closet, before putting on the white uniform.
It fit incredibly well, and I was very worried since it seemed to be made specifically for my body and I never gave that information to anyone. I still had some time before the official welcome to the Academy so I spent that free time organizing my books on the desk and writing down a good part of the knowledge I was given by Siegfried, thinking that it would be useful in the future.
After that, with the sound of a horn, the call was made for every student to meet in the courtyard. I stood up, placed my scabbard where it belongs on my waist, and walked over. I was one of the first to arrive, and for some reason Arthur pulled me aside. This gave me a very bad feeling, since I was now standing alongside the teachers, directly in front of all the other students.
