Chapter 2: Chapter 2

Remi kept explaining to the seemingly unapproachable man how she and her friend got connections in places that weren't those 'low-life' parties. She explained to him how they stopped partying like that once they found enough pretentious men that unconsciously gave them other snobbish locations. Among these places, there were a couple in particular that Remi and Leila liked to go to regularly. There were some hotels in the city that were said to be frequented by wealthy people. More specifically, by men that wanted to go to these hotels' bars to get away after work, so that if they got lucky enough they would already be at a hotel.

Leila wasn't too sure about going to these places because she wasn't sure that they could even afford a coffee there. But then, Remi had an idea (a quite crazy one at that), but surprisingly enough, it worked. One of the girls would wear a big purse and they would both sit at a table. They would make it look as if they weren't sure what to ask for, and while one of them diverted the attention, the other one took dinnerware and glasses similar to the ones in the bar out from her purse. Sometimes it wasn't even necessary to deflect the attention from the one with the purse because, in a place like that, full of somewhat affluent people, they just didn't pay attention to the others' tables. Then, all they had to do was sit and be pretty with their glamorous rented dresses, and some time along the night, especially the later it got, guys would end up approaching them.

By then they needed to have reached a high level of observation as it was vital for them to know which men were actually successful, and which men were just pretending. Everyone could afford a decent suit. You have to take a look at things like their shoes, their watches, how they sit and act, ... Things that normal people don't even pay attention to. If the man that approached them was pretending, they would politely but directly reject them, and Remi and Leila would keep conversing by themselves. And if the man fulfilled the girls' requirements, they would keep up with their acting. Then, many times there'd be men that tried to convince the two friends to stay the night with them at the hotel. When that happened Leila would pretend to be drunk, which thanks to her lively personality was quite easy to do, and Remi would insist that she needed to take care of her and take her home. Saying that if she was to leave her alone she'd feel bad all night, so she needed to take care of her for the whole night.

And lastly, there were the men with whom they took the most profit. There were some guys that genuinely wanted to have a break from their work, so all Leila and Remi had to do was talk about themselves and ask personal questions to the men, making sure that they got them to get away from the worries of their jobs. That way, these men would end up coming back regularly in order to talk to these two interesting girls, and in the end, they would think of them as really good friends. This was how they got to broaden their means of getting contacts because with time they would end up getting invited to small events as companions. And in the end, it was just a matter of time before the two girls talked their way into more important people, meetings, and events.

"How long" the man once again interrupted her speech "How much time have you been attending events like this one?"

Remi left her half-empty drink over the glass coffee table in between her and the man, and then she looked around the private room. Besides them, there was only a private bartender exclusively for them, and two bodyguards at the door. However, she somehow felt less tense than at the beginning. Perhaps because she thought that even though this man was still as intimidating, if he were to do something to her for having caught her, he would have already done it.

"Two years? A year and a half? Something like that" she answered, and then directed her gaze back to the dark-haired man in front of her. He stayed in silence, observing her while leaning his head on his hand and finishing his liquored drink.

"That's a lot of time if your true motive to do these things truly was to ensure a job after your studies. So, you're either lying to me or are not savvy enough to get contacts. Which one is it?" he said, his dark aura emanating from him again, making Remi swallow and thank God that she wasn't lying.

"It's neither" she answered keeping her cool "You got the list of the guests for the last event, and you saw that we weren't there, so what's the point in lying? Leila did get contacts because her studies are more suited for the people attending these events. Mines on the other hand... not so much. We were originally going to stop because she already has the beginning of her career set up, but she insisted that she wanted to pay me back for having helped her. Hence why we were at the museum event last week"

Remi and Leila had worked hard to expand their contacts. Leila met with a shareholder of a relatively famous company within the entertainment industry. They weren't the biggest, but they had been the ones to direct many advertising campaigns of a wide variety of things. From movies to music albums, and the list was actually quite long. They weren't the ones at the top, but they were slowly yet surely making it. And now, Leila had managed to ensure an internship with them, which meant that if she played her cards well she would keep working there afterward. Besides, she had also managed to meet with more people from the PR world which only made things for her easier. Even Remi, who hadn't found many useful people for what she wanted to do had still managed to meet a few. That's why Remi suggested for both of them to stop doing what they did and focus on their last year of college, but Leila disagreed. From her point of view, they had reached so far... it would be a waste to stop now. But if she had said what she actually thought, she knew that Remi wouldn't let her continue, so she said that they would stop once they found an internship for Remi too.

Leila had been told of an event at a museum by one of the men that was interested in her and that she used. Although they weren't quite fond of the term use. As soon as the two girls stepped foot in the place, the man spotted the two girls and stuck with them for a while. They talked and he introduced Leila to a couple of people from the same company. In reality, it was Leila who was meant to be accompanying Remi because they had gone to that event to get background for the latter. But in the end, the one who was the plus one was Remi. She didn't mind though, because she was aware that there weren't many contacts she could get in those events, and she just enjoyed these things and helping her friend anyway. But after all, this man ended up getting Leila with him to meet more people, leaving Remi alone.

Remi sipped from her glass of champagne as she gazed around, inspecting the people and listening to the conversations surrounding her so she could figure out if there was actually someone useful for her. She conversed with a couple of people that seemed potentially suitable for her future, and with her high EQ she managed to get on their good side. But in reality, they were simply the owners of a small fashion magazine, so even if they had liked Remi, it still wasn't a great opportunity that she had landed.

After an hour of talking with those people, Leila suddenly reappeared. Remi politely introduced Leila to the director and his wife who happened to also have an important charge inside the magazine. But they quickly put their attention elsewhere as people around them started to gossip in whispers. Meanwhile, both Leila and Remi tried to make out the topic of the many discussions around them while they trailed everyone's gaze to the same spot.
