Chapter 2: When Being Overwhelmed by Missions...

"Keys are a symbol to unlock the unknown." I remembered what the old man said sometime before when he was still alive.

It was true. The unknown were mysteries. Mysteries were locked. And every lock has a key. In this case, those that were left to me can unlock magic when used.

The Akashic Keys were a collection of different kinds of keys. In total, there are all 20 keys. Many, I know. But each of these keys hold different powers. Each of these are powerful and could be used for evil if placed in the wrong hands.

But in between being hunted by hundreds of people just because of the large price on my head at the same time keeping the keys a secret and can't let anyone steal it, and while finding out the secret of the keys and my origin, I don't know if I will still survive under all that burden. I just hope nothing adds to it anymore.

The sun rose hours ago and I left my black coat and mask inside my bag. I only use it when I steal every night or when I can't sleep and am on the run and was set to question the assassins more about why they're after me and kill them mercilessly.

Honestly, I felt no emotions or whatsoever when blood spills occur. It was like a normal routine everyday to see something horrendous. However, this should not be a habit for a twenty year old man like me. I should have at least felt like a crack in my heart, right? Yet no emotions were being blurted out.

I own an apartment but I rarely sleep because I was being paranoid enough to the point where I would prepare myself if any attackers would come. The assassins actually only have information of my name and my identity as a shadow then nothing else. It would be safe for me to walk on mornings without my mask on and I should just be careful.

I yawned and walked towards a cafe to have breakfast. I made tons of money through my dark web and my job as a thief who steals for others, so I can only say that it's no biggie.

The cashier girl was younger than me with dyed chestnut brown hair. Quincy, as proclaimed by the name tag, was always in the morning shift and we call each other by names. I call her the name written on her name tag with a black broad marker while I used a fake name so she wouldn't know who I was. Quincy knew me as Lars. She asked me what I want to order and I said that I would like the exact same thing I order everyday.

I sipped into my black coffee and I wandered around the town, carefully stepping on the sidewalk and crossing the roads. When I was about to taste the last sip of coffee, I spat it out accidentally and jumped when someone patted my back. I turned my head to look at who it was and I hope it to be just my imagination.

I gulped, "What are you doing here, Liv?"

"I came to find you." She smiled at me so innocently.

She cannot be seen here with me again. Not again. I erased her information the last time and I can't do it now. Currently when I got my hands full of stuff I can't Liv get involved in.

I met Livviana Morii back when I left the old man's house. It was night time and I needed a place to stay. No one would allow a ten year old child stay alone at a hotel at least for one night. Fortunately for me at that time, I met this naive blonde girl who let me stay at her house. Liv's parents were on a business trip, she once told me, and she was on her own for the night.

We became friends after that. But I stayed away from her after I discovered that the assassins are using everyone I encountered and became acquainted with as a threat or a blackmail to capture me. When capturing me alive didn't work, they went into overdrive and killed them or tried to kill me. Sadly, I couldn't save them but if I were the one to be killed, I left the crime scene without a scratch. This is why I try to stay away as possible. She cannot be seen with me!

"Let me be alone," I muttered and paced away from her hastily.

She pouted, grasping my hands and entwining our fingers. "Not even a hello to your dear old best friend?"

"Goodbye," I released myself from her. After I threw the disposable coffee cup in a trash can, I walked away from her. Please don't follow me, hopefully my thoughts reaches her.

Running out of luck, it didn't. My phone vibrated in my pocket, notifying me that there's a client who wanted me to steal, but I can't open it and let her see what I have been doing for the past years.

"Ki, wait up. Why are you ignoring me?" she grabbed my hand and gathered force to stop me.

Shit! She called my name. If anyone heard that, I would be chased after even if it's in daylight. I could imagine the attention of the assassins looking our way and secretly following us. Completely out of luck, it wasn't my imagination when I noticed the same man behind us for half an hour while I continued to ignore Liv and she tried to cling onto my arm. I dragged Liv with me. She was seen and now she's involved. If she's hurt, I would be too. I can't just let her be left to the assassin.

"Why are we running?" she asked me as her blonde hair swayed to the wind and leaped a few several times.

I looked back to see the man keeping up the pace and was still on the follow. I led her to a dark alley where no sunlight passes through and quickly threw my black coat to her. "Wear it," I declared, putting on my red gloves.

"Ki, you're s-scaring me," she stammered, quickly putting on my coat.

For the time being, I have to ignore her and concentrate on protecting Liv. If I couldn't do it back then, I will do it now. Additionally, he must be killed or he would inform his comrades of my real appearance or else my mornings would be disrupted and I would be on the run my whole life without achieving any of my other missions.

The set of clothes I have that looked like for cosplay were given to me anonymously on the night I slept in Liv's house. They just left a box on the doorstep and was addressed to me. We both did not know who sent it or why they would when I was a boy worth billions of dollars. At first, I thought there would be a tracker attached but it had been years and I would only be chased down whenever I show myself in public at night with the infamous silver mask attached to my face. But if I were inside my apartment without any of my clothes as a shadow, I was peaceful.

In addition to using my shadow outfit, there was a note that I have to drop a blood on the coat while thinking of a word. Only one word. The first thing that came to my mind was darkness. And yes, I did what the note said. The time when my blood trickled down the edge of my thumb, I acquired these dark powers. I could control it, but not completely. To fully be in control of shadows, I wore my red gloves in everytime I need to use a little bit of magic. At this moment, I needed to finish it quickly before Liv suspects something troubling about me. Also, the coat was covered with tiny bits of darkness that would do what the owner of the dropped blood says. In other words, it would do what I tell the darkness to do. And I told it to blind Liv for moment.

It was a useful gadget. I own a useful ability. And I believed myself to be invincible, but when it comes to the innocent victims involved, they became casualties without me even realizing that I couldn't do anything.

I snapped my fingers and commanded the shadows with my thoughts to make the man stay put. It was as if he knew what I was thinking when all of a sudden, be jumped out before the darkness could take hold of his feet. On the contrary, he was no man. He was a she. When she made a turn in the air, the wig fell and revealed a girl brown hair. It was the same girl that I encountered yesterday and the same girl who was supposedly dead. How the hell is she here?!

"How are you alive?" I roared, blocking her view of Livviana. "Who are you?!"

"Oh please. As if you don't know. You are using magic already. I thought you were smart and all, and not as dumb as the other Cursed," she scoffed, kicking strong wind towards us. I hindered the wind with my hand until I created a solid barrier of darkness.

When the wind stopped, the brunette with emerald eyes was already gone. Liv suddenly collapsed when she took the coat off. And I saw my bag wide open. The keys were almost at the surface. I counted... and one was missing.
