Chapter 2: New Friend

Angyar's P.O.V

Good thing is that Alyth is with Aver. The true reason why I didn't bring her with us is that this could get bloody. I didn't want her to see all that blood. I can clearly sense a few Abanders somewhere far, so I know for sure that we are going to get into battle. Of course, I also wanted to keep her safe from them, and that's why I made sure she's with Aver since he's very strong and can protect Alyth.

If worse comes to worst, I'll give her the Vandestry. "Mallo's back." Good. Now we can really start. We're at the gateway to the village, where monsters come in. The Abanders will definitely attack us, so we're ready. "Is Alyth safe?" I ask, giving a glance to Mallo. "Yes, she's fine." He said without returning the glance. Relief washes over me. Soon enough, the relief gets washed away. "Abanders are close!!" I yell, successfully getting everyone's attention.

We all get in our fighting positions and I unsheathe my sword when an Abander attacks me from behind. Goddammit! haven't fought in so long! Their claws clash against my sword, sending shockwaves everywhere from the pressure. I am not the only one to fight though.

Everyone's fighting at least 2 Abanders. Not only that, but each Abander is huge in size, and strong as hell!! If we weren't this strong, we would've been dead a long time ago. As soon as I finished beating up those Abanders, I started helping Halvort defeat his. "These little pieces of crap! They're so damn strong!"

I sigh. We can't do anything about it. We have to protect our village.

Alyth's P.O.V

For a while now, this dude hasn't said anything and it's making me worried. What if he figured me out? Ah… I am in huge trouble… But what's more important is that I am hungry. DAMN PEASANT, BRING ME FOOD!!! Of course, I can't say that. Instead, my stomach says it for me.

GRUMBLE.

He turned around and looked at me and I instantly started crying. "WAHHHH!!!!!!!" He shut his ears and gave me a 'plz stop' look. "Ok, I'll give you whatever you babies eat, just stop." I kept on crying. I know he said that to test out if I'll listen to him. He groaned and grabbed the bottle Mallo gave him and shoved it in my mouth. THAT'S NOT HOW YOU SHOULD TREAT BABIES!!!!

He went back to doing his weird wizardry work while I drank my milk. This guy is definitely single. DEFINITELY. He glanced a few times at me but I am a good actor. As soon as I finished my milk, I started behaving as a 'normal' baby should. I slid off the bed and started crawling. Aver was too busy being a wizard sort of dude so I wandered around that room as much as I wanted. He sure has a lot of weird stuff. Is that on the table… a skull…? No way… THIS GUY ISN'T SAFE!!! GET ME OUT OF HERE!!!!

He eventually found me and put me back on the bed, saying "If you wandered around just a bit more, you would've done something terrible!" What did he even mean by that? Did he mean… I would've found the dead bodies of the people he's secretly been killing?! Ok, I am damn good at imagining. "Sigh. You're a normal baby, right?" AS IF I'D ANSWER THAT!!!! Did he think I'd be like 'Oh yes, absolutely normal.' I tried to slide off the bed again but stopped when he gave off a murderous glare. I shivered.

KNOCK KNOCK

I flinch. Who… is it? Aver turned around and opened the door, my giant grin becoming more and more visible. IT'S DADDY!!! He came! "Yo. Sorry to suddenly make you take care of my daughter." Aver shakes his head. "I am thankful for you. Come in." "Thanks, but I only came to give you diapers and some milk." Oh. So he didn't come to see me. But he came to make sure I was alive! "I figured she'd be annoying with all her constant crying so I thought I should help you. I have to go now. See ya." No, wait… "D-dad..dy…" Oh crap! I actually blurted that out!!

Daddy stopped and looked at me. Both of them did! "Alyth…?" Daddy came closer and hugged me. At least he's paying attention to me! Wait, does that mean I wanted his attention? WHAT THE HELL?! I guess I am too spoiled, haha. I am so not used to him forgetting about me. "Aver… DID YOU HEAR THAT?!! DADDY WAS HER FIRST WORD, AND AT 5 MONTHS OLD!!!" His eyes sparkled as he put me down on the bed. "Of course it is. You're her only family in this whole world." Daddy looked down. Was he sad? Ugh, the mood is all depressing now! I don't care that my mom died! I have my dad!

"Daddy!" I pulled on his shirt, motioning for him to pick me up, and he did. "My daughter grew up so fast!" He teared up. "Chill, she's 5 months old." Daddy, you should listen to Aver. He looked at me with a sad expression, but quickly shook it off and put me on the bed. "I have to get going now. Bye." I waved at him and giggled. After he left, I started feeling very sleepy. So much has happened today… Plus, a baby needs about 16 hours of sleep every day. YAWN. I guess I should… go to sleeppppppppp...

Aver glanced one last time at Alyth as she slept.

Even if you didn't notice it, he smiled a bit.

THE NEXT DAY

I woke up pretty early, but the problem was that the Aver dude slept next to me. I wanted to punch him in the face, but I am a baby with no strength. Anyway, since I was awake before Aver, I wandered around. What caught my interest more is the human skull. Whose is that…? Ughhh. I feel terrible. Let's go somewhere else. Hm-hmm-hmmm…

After a while, I got bored. Where now? How about… we check those books? I crawled over to the bookcase and pulled out a book. I sat on the ground and tried to read it. Uh… it's no use. My problem is that I am 5 months old, yet I can't see properly.

Maybe it's something serious… Meh. Not only can I not see well, but I can't read this language, whatever it is.

UGHHHH THIS SUCKS!!! I threw the book on the ground and turned my attention to the hat that leaned on the box beside the bed. I picked it up and put it over my tiny head. Uh… I can't really see anything. Let's take it off my head now since it's so big. Oh no, I can't take it off. The head hole is too deep and my hands can't handle taking it off. AHH!!! Now I fell on my back and started rolling on the ground. OUCH! I think my head hit the leg of the table!

Suddenly, all I could see right now is Aver, wide awake, and on top of me. Hello? "You little brat." WHAT?! EXCUSE ME!! Oh. He's holding the vase that was on the table? "This vase almost fell on your fricking head." Oh, haha. Sorry. He sighs and puts the vase back on the table. He then picks me up and puts me down on the bed. Now I am hungry. Let's cry. "Waah." I cried in such a fake manner. "What now?" I sucked on my thumb to show that I was really hungry. He made an 'o' face and took the bottle daddy brought yesterday and heated it up after lighting the oven. Then he stuck it in my mouth like how he should to a baby. Of course. It'd be weird if he put it properly. Sigh. Why am I treated like this?

KNOCK.

WHO'S THERE?!?! Aver went up and opened the door. MALLO!!! "Good morning. I am here to get Alyth. Thanks for taking care of her." "No problem." "Did she cause you trouble?" "No, she just keeps on being a brat." Mallo nods as if it's the right thing to say. BRUH. He picked me and the stuff daddy brought and walked back to the door. "Wait, I'll come with you." Mallo nods again and they both head out after Aver locked the door. I am gonna go see daddy, daddy, daddy! I am gonna go see daddy, all day long.

After a while, we arrived at the same bakery shop that I saw yesterday and everyone was there. "Daddy!" He picked me up with a smile. "Did you have a good day with Aver?" Instead of nodding, I tilt my head to the side to show that I don't understand anything he said and giggled. I missed you so much, daddy! "Everyone, thanks for fighting instead of me. I really needed that break." He says sheepishly.

That look doesn't suit him. At all. Now pay attention to ME! "Pa, pa… Papa…" He still ignores me. Look at me! GODDAMMIT! I EXIST!! Daddy…! Pops! I feel so lonely now… "WAHHHHH!!!!!!" Uh no! Stop! Stop crying, self! "Wait, why are you crying?! Alyth?!" He rocks me in his arms. "It's okay…" DAMN!!! I just instinctively stopped crying. "At first, I couldn't see you as a father, but you really are a dad." Said Halvort. "What? What do you mean?" "Nothing!" Daddy looks confused. "Anyway, let's go back home."

8 Months Old

Seriously, this guy has problems! Halvort is over at our house and chatting with daddy while I sit on the bed. Their talks are really boring and I don't have anyone to talk to. I wish Mallo was here or someone I can talk to. "So Angyar, my sister has a 9-year-old boy and she has to work, so I was wondering if you could take care of him for 3 hours a day only?" Daddy and I both look at him. A friend?!?! I CAN TALK TO SOMEONE? Oh wait, a 9-year-old child wouldn't talk with an 8 months old baby and not tell their parents. Sigh. I am so lonely. "With the payment of course!" Daddy pauses for a few moments. "Alright. He could also be Alyth's friend." A FRIEND!!! YAY!!!

But when? "I have to get going now. I promised Vindra that I'd help her with her library shift." Daddy nods. "Avolt (Halvort)… Bye Bye!" I wave as I 'try' to stand up. I forgot to say that I can somewhat walk. I practiced a lot with daddy, so I can walk a little, but only after 30 fails. So, I fell flat on my butt. "Hahaha!!! Bye Alyth!!" I grin.

A while after Halvort leaves, daddy makes me some baby food. "Wah ba." What is this? Mashed fruits? It tastes so good! "Like it?" "Bah!" There are still some unmashed fruits so I am trying to bite them, but it's so annoying! I started teething about a month ago and I keep biting and chewing on stuff. I always chew on his sword grip. Haha, and his face when I do it.

...

Uhh… I didn't really notice before, but who's this?

"Ribius, say hi." She told him to say hi, but he's glaring at me. The woman holding his right-hand sighs. "I am so sorry. He's always like this. He never plays with the other kids and instead reads books all day long ever since he was 1."

Shouldn't she be proud of him? He's basically a genius if he can read at 1 year old. "Please take care of him." So he's Halvort's nephew? Okay… but he looks very unapproachable and scary. A 9-year-old shouldn't look like that.

But at least he looks good. He has black hair and red eyes. Such a pretty child. "Yes. You can go to work now." Says daddy. She nods and leaves. "Get along, 'kay?" He says that and goes to his room. So you're gonna leave a baby with a 9-year-old?

Understandable.

Ribius boy ignores the very existence of me and walks over to the bookcase with sparkles in his eyes. He looks back and forth between each shelf of books a few times before finally pausing at a book and taking it out. He sat on the ground and started reading it while I just stood there doing nothing.

This is a very awkward situation. What should I do? Hmm… Ah! I walked- or actually, tottered over to the bookcase.

He doesn't even glance at me.

I took out a random book on the bottom shelf and sat next to Ribius boy. Still no acknowledgment, huh? Okay, you asked for it! I put the book on the ground since it was too heavy for me to hold and I opened the first page. I immediately had no idea what the first word said. Uhh… Afiragi Sobil Ma Jinsu Kanli At Wert Mioska Ilfati Etrouge? How strange… I pulled the edge of Ribius's shirt to get him to look over. "Bibus. Hat Min (Ribius, what does this mean)?" "Bibus? Are you calling me a girl who daydreams?" I giggle. "Bibus~" "Shut up. And, that says 'the long lost kingdom of Ilfati and the main city of Etrouge'. Don't pick a book you can't even read." "Hoo… Weach Aphy wead (Will you teach Athy how to read)?"

"No." "Pwease~?" I whine with sparkles in my eyes and expectations spelled all over my face. "...Only the basics." He gave in. No one can not be charmed by my looks. "Wank eo! Wank eo! (Thank you)" He sighed. You don't really need to sigh.

"Can you ask your father for a paper and some ink?" I nod. I totter over to daddy's room.

This is very strange.

I can speak and understand this language, but I can't read it? It's spelled like English, but the words make no sense. How strange~ But at least Ribius can understand me. Whenever I try to speak to daddy, he blinks at me in confusion and then ignores me like I am speaking baby gibberish.

Wait, I am. I guess Ribius can understand because he's been in that stage and he's basically a genius. I think his mother is worried, thinking he has some sort of problem because they aren't exactly used to having a genius, as the village is very small and limited.

I slammed the door open as if I own this place and walked in there, grabbed a paper and ink pen from his table while he's right there, and left.

Just like a boss. Haha, he looks confused. I bet he's used to me acting like this. I went back to my place next to Ribius and dropped my squishy butt on the ground. I handed him the paper and pen and he started writing something. I wonder what, I wonder what~ Is the Alphabet in English too? Then I would be able to read it so easily! Then I'll really be titled as the genius! My smile dropped when I saw the Alphabet he wrote.

What is this? It's nothing like English! "Hmph. Did you think you could understand this? Sometimes, when you read a sentence, it looks like all you need to do is understand the individual meaning of each word. But when you read the Alphabet and actually start reading and writing it, the illusions of it being familiar will go away and you'll have to memorize and learn the entire thing." So basically this whole 'it's spelled like English' is an illusion since I am so used to reading and writing in English? So the Alphabet is nothing like when the words come together to form a sentence? That's really confusing. He just gave me the paper and went back to reading.

"Bibus?" "Memorise those letters. That's the first step." Aww… he said he would only teach me the Alphabet, but I can tell he wants to teach me entirely how to read and write! Oh wait, I think writing comes later. I still have a baby grip so it'll be hard to hold the pen properly. I'll have to train my baby fingers. Let's see… Af? Saf? Raf? WTF?!?! What type of Alphabet is this? Oh wait, it's not English. I am guessing it isn't in the ABC order, but that'll be harder to learn. SIGH. Let's just memorize this.

AFTER AN ETERNITY

I pulled the edge of Ribius's shirt. "Winish. (finish)" He looked over at me in interest. "Recite it." I gave him the paper and recalled every last letter. I have to do my absolute best to pronounce the words. "Af, Saf, Raf, Baf, Haf, Kaf, Laf, Naf, Uaf, Waf, Xaf, Daf, Gaf, Qaf, Eaf, Iaf, Maf, Zaf, Vaf, Yaf, Caf, Jaf, Taf, Faf, Oaf." It feels not only dumb to say, but also very unfamiliar. He nods and looks back to his book.

… What now? "...How'd you read it? I never told you any of them." Crap. I tilt my head. "Stop feigning ignorance." Why is he so hard to trick goddammit?! Do I really have to tell him? "I-" "Alyth, Ribius, let's go out." Just in time! Thank you, daddy! "Where?" "To the village. I have some stuff to do there and I can't leave you here." Seriously? Will I get to meet Mallo then? He's the only person I can talk to, but I feel like Ribius will be added too.

UGH!
