Chapter 31: Past life
'Ha who would have thought that my husband was reborn as well. Well to be honest the signs were there ,I just didn't want to see them ,i guess.
Just thinking about it his arrival should have been a sign but then again that alone would not have given him away. Unlike me he did not even give away even a little piece of evidence or clue to even raise any suspicions about his identity . He gave off nothing at all . Heck if he hadn't admitted to it himself yesterday l would have never thought of it at all . That guy seems to be an even better actor than me. He must have been laughing at me all this time . Hmpf that guy and his stupid stone face.'
"Hai"Emilia sighed and rolled to over face Ling Xiao . After staring at his face for a full minute Emilia's restless thoughts calmed down ." Why am I thinking about this too much anyway.
Isn't it better that he knows. That way proceeding will be easier."
'But even then why do I feel...scammed.'
"Aggh!" Emilia pulled her hair frustrated. 'What am I even doing' she sighed and rolled over again, lying on her back and facing the roof.
"Can't sleep?"A deep voice sounded from beside her.
"Whoa" Emilia exclaimed as she quickly turned to face him startled.
"You're awake?" she placed a hand over her beating heart taking breaths to calm herself down
"Ya no one would be able to sleep with you rolling around like that." he chuckled turning placing his arm under his cheek and hoisting himself up a bit "so what's bothering you?"
"I just feel... I just feel restless and nervous i guess . You know for the future- Sometimes When I look at how peaceful everything is , after getting a chance to experience all this again I just don't wanna let it go again." She flopped back onto the bed.
"Guess the saying really is true"
"What saying?" Ling Xiao asked her
"You know the one of how it is hard to go from riches to frugality. I dont think I'll be able to stand going back to live in that filthy apocalypse again. Just the thought of it makes me want to puke"
Ling Xiao was silent for a little while before he responded "Well even if I can't stop our desent to poverty I can still afford to make you the village queen."
Looking at Ling Xiao saying those words with a serious face Emilia couldn't help but break into laughter
"Ok don't be so serious I'm sure this apocalypse will not be so bad. We've both been preparing right."
"Mhm" Ling Xiao hummed "I'm guessing the house in S city is your preparation"
He asked
"Yep" feeling energised Emilia sat up again. "The house has been redesigned and reinforced by me. It has bullet proof windows, sound proof walls, steel doors covered in wood for disguise, an extra large basement for storage, a greenhouse and a comfy living space, I've also installed solar panels on the entire roof but had it covered by a special material to make it look like they are not there in the first place. Oh right the inside of the walls are actually made of steal ,you know to reinforce them incase of an attack."
"You've really thought everything through haven't you?" Ling Xiao looked at his wife amazed.
"Of course that's the house I'll be staying in for who knows how many years to come I have to be prepared don't I. And I've made it look like a normal house so no one will ever known that our house is different from the rest.Aint I just the greatest" Emilia looked at Ling Xiao with anticipation
"Yes you are" Ling Xiao sat up and rubbed her head.
Emilia's behaviour reminded Ling Xiao that Emilia herself was still young only being 24. He really should get her to do less and enjoy her youth
"what about you?, what did youprepare?" Emilia asked him
"I've also gotten a house together and collected some supplies" Ling Xiao replied
"Wait won't it be a problem that we've both prepared houses. So where should we stay" Emilia asked as she came to realise a serious problem
"Dont worry we can stay at the house you bought there is no problem" he responded with a smile
"But..you also prepared a house so won't it be a waste of your money and efforts if we don't end up using it" Emilia lowered her head as she asked him
"No it won't go to waste I'll just get my team and their families to move in there it should be big enough. Plus it's also in the same residential area so it will not be a waste. But now I have to think of where Grandpa , mother-in-law , father-in-law and brother-in-law will stay."
"Eh" Emilia looked at him dubiously
"The house I had arranged was quite large I wanted it to be big enough to fit everyone but now that we will be leaving alone I don't think it will be good for Grandpa and the others to stay together" Ling Xiao explained
"Oh then you don't need to worry I bought two other houses when I bought ours and also had them reinforced. I had arranged for my parents and brother to stay in them so they can move there. And it's right next door so there won't be much of a problem with taking care of Grandpa and my family so you don't need to stress about it much"
Emilia smiled at him
"Well aren't you prepared" Ling Xiao chuckled and rubbed her hair " Come on its time for breakfast he said getting up. We can continue discussing there"
"Ok" she also got up and headed to the bathroom to freshen up, she was quite sure Ling Xiao had gone to the bathroom next door to go freshen up before going down to make breakfast
Once Emilia was done showering she stepped out of the shower and stood in front of the mirror. She stood there for a minute just looking at her reflection in the mirror.
After about a minute Emilia patted her cheeks "just one step at a time..That's all I need to do." She looked at herself again before she walked out of the bathroom.
A few minutes later Emilia came arrived downstairs and was met with a table full of breakfast dishes
"Hey you can take a seat" Ling Xiao called out to her from the kitchen when he saw her coming down.
"How are you so fast" Emilia asked bewildered as she sat down by the table and looked at all the dishes
"Well the speed comes from experience of fast cooking" he said as he brought a plate full of bacon to the table "plus it has been an hour since I started"
"Eh an hour why did it only seem like twenty minutes to me" Emilia mumbled to herself
"Hm" ling Xiao just smiled and began serving the dishes
"I still don't understand how your cooking can be this delicious" Emilia said as she ate a spoon of porridge
"Well I was responsible for feeding our family for two and a half years in the past so how could I let my wife and son eat anything subpar" ling Xiao responded with a smile
Emilia smiled for a bit before she seemed to have realised something
"What do you mean wife and son and feeding us us for two and a half years. We never married in our past life and you never got to meet Ling Qin" she mumbled before picking up some bacon and taking a bite
After hearing what Emilia said Ling Xiao put down his spoon and sighed
Seeing that he was not eating anymore Emilia looked at him and asked him between bites
"What are you full already you haven't even eaten anything yet"
"You...What ability did you have in your past life" Ling Xiao asked slowly
"Metal ability" Emilia answered on reflex
"And when did we meet" Ling Xiao asked again
"Two years into the apocalypse. Why are you asking me this shouldn't you know as well" she smiled lightly as she continued eating.
After not getting a response and seeing that Ling Xiao had his head down Emilia ĺooked up at him
"What's wrong? " she asked as she placed her spoon down
Ling Xiao opened his mouth to respond but still didn't say anything
"Is something the matter" Emilia sked as she finally felt that something was wrong
"In my past life... we married at around the same time as this life and you and Ling Qin died two years into the apocalypse. You...you also didnt have an ability" Ling Xiao said slowly
"What are you talking about that's clearly not how it went" Emilia asked him
"I think we might not have experienced the same past life...we might not even have been from the same world" Ling Xiao explained lowly
"You're joking right ?" Emilia asked with a laugh but seeing Ling Xiao not laughing her smile slowly faded
"This...You.."Emilia didn't know what to say at the moment.
Finding out that her husband was reborn was already difficult to accept but now thinking that he might not even be the same person was a whole other matter.
Seeing that Emilia was silent Ling Xiao decided to continue talking "Seems to me that our futures were all different but our pasts were still the same. So we...we can be sure that we are still technically the same people just with different futures in different world's.I suspect we might be from parallel world's"
"Parallel world's huh...Isn't that stuff from fiction novels" Emilia said absent-minded
"What are you thinking?" Ling Xiao lightly knocked on her head. "You've lived through the end days, fought zombies,got abilities and faced rebirth isn't that fiction enough for you?" he chuckled
"Hehe" Emilia pouted. So what if they were not from the same world she had lived with him long enough to know that he was still the same person as the man in her past. If she really couldn't tell whether he was the Ling Xiao she knew then she didn't deserve to say she loved him enough in her past life.
She trusted her judgement on this matter so she didn't linger on any negative thoughts regarding this topic any longer. Except for the initial shock she was now more interested in how she behaved in his past life and whether she was the same.
"So did I really not have any abilities in your past life?" She asked him while picking up a Sandwich to continue munching on .
Her husband spent an hour making this for her so why would she waste such a treat . How could she be so ungrateful? It had absolutley nothing to do with the fact that this food tasted like it was made by a Michelin star chef .
"No you didnt have any abilities "Ling Xiao said. "But that didnt stop you from being absolutley fierce . No one wanted to be on your bad side . You weren't really any different from now ." He lightly chuckled as he remembered the past .
"Hmpf are you implying that im difficult to deal with" Emilia snorted , taking a sip of her juice
"Huh! Ling Xiao was Caught completely off guard by the statement
"How could that be your not difficult at all. If any your temper is as delicate as a child"
"So your saying I act like a child" Emilia immediately responded
"Ehh?" Ling Xiao was lost and just looked at her blankly for a second
"Haha!" Emilia broke into laughter.
"Oh my goodness you should have seen your face." She said in between laughing fits.
"Don't be so serious I was just teasing you that's all and don't be so relaxed not all kids have Qin Qin's agreeableness, I know I'm not supposed to say this but some are real devil's." She said once she caught her breathe
"Mh" ling Xiao smiled and rubbed her her
"Now come on eat up we still have a couple things left to arrange" Emilia smiled at him before she placed see bacon into his plate.
"Ok" Ling Xiao responded.
"So what ability did you have in the past?" Emilia asked again
"Ice" Ling Xiao reported
"Ehh that's the same as what you had in my past life!" Emilia said shocked.
"Really?" Ling Xiao looked at her suprissed "I thought I had something else or maybe non at all!"
"Me too... wait! Why is it that you had abilities in both life's and yet I didn't have any in your lifetime? How unfair is that ah!?"
"Hehe guess I'm still the one with the greatest luck" Ling Xiao guffled
"Of course your lucky otherwise how do you think you got such a big beauty to be your wife. If your didn't have an entire lifetimes worth of luck stored away somewhere how would it be remotely possible for you to have me as your wife. Your really are one lucky fella"
"Yes yes I'm very lucky" Ling Xiao smiled at her act of arrogance.
"Hey do you think we should tell ling Qin about our rebirth cause in most rebirth novels I've read you don't really tell others that stuff" Emilia said after a little while
"Ling Qin is reborn as well" Ling Xiao responded in a matter of fact way as he drank some porridge
"What did you say !?" Emilia almost chocked on her drink
"He's reborn" Ling Xiao said, "What didn't I tell you" he looked at her confused
"No you didnt!"Emilia almost screamed "If you did would I be so shocked right now? Huh!?"
"Oh I forgot" Ling Xiao smiled
"You... You..You!" she pointed her finger not knowing what to say
"Wait how do you know?" Emilia asked him
"He told me!" Ling Xiao said matter of factly
"But why you?" Emilia asked exasperated
"I don't know why but I feel attacked by that statement" Ling Xiao said softly.
Seeing Emilia's glare he decided to be serious " He told me that he wasn't sure whether you would believe him... Plus it would be better to make a fool of himself in front of me than his beloved mommy" he added with a chuckle
"He...is he from your past life?" Emilia asked softly
Ling Xiao looked at her for a second before he shook his head
"Do you know about what happened in his past life?" she asked quietly
Ling Xiao was silent for a bit "he told me that you died saving him from a zombie two and a half years from now. He lived on his own for a few months before I met him and took him in"
Once ling Xiao was done speaking he realised that Emilia was awfully quiet with her head lowered
"Hey what's wrong?" He asked her but she still remained silent. A second later Ling Xiao seemed to see a tear lending on the table
"Hey Lia what's wrong!?" he asked alarmed kneeling before her and lifting up her chin so he could look at her eyes directly.
"Why are you crying?"he reached out his hand to wipe her tears
"It'd just..hiccup...I cant believe my baby had to go through all that by himself. He was all alone in that base surrounded by beasts or zombies. How could I let him suffer all alone"
"Hey its alright" Ling Xiao pulled her into a hug "even though I was a little late I still got to him right. And aren't we here now. This time we just have to work hard and not let anything happen to him again right. Isn't that why you bought that house and prepared everything you did?, to prevent him from suffering again. So how about we do that and forget about the past. No not forget...We'll learn from it so that this life Qinqin can have the best life. How about that? Hm?" Ling Xiao said pushing Emilia a little back so he could look her in the face
"Okay" Emilia said taking a breath
"Now come on" Ling Xiao wiped her tears " Finish your breakfast, you're gonna need a lot of energy if you want to run around with me getting supplies. Here" he pushed her plate towards her with a smile
Hm Emilia smiled and reached for her plate
"You know for someone who lived through the apocalypse for six whole years you're awfully soft. In a good way of course" Ling Xiao said to her as he sat back down
"That's only in front of my family to others I'm pretty cold, after all the apocalypse has taught me a thing or two about the human heart. I'll be a fool if I treated everyone nicely." Emilia replied
"Thats good. Now come on and eat up its almost time to pick Qinqin, I'm sure you want to do it." Ling Xiao said
"Ya I do"
