Chapter 2: Chapter 2 - Three Lost Idiots

Sitting around a campfire at the Kazimierz-Ursian border, three idiots ate their dry rations in an awkward silence.

The Sanktas were naturally silent, whilst the newcomer called Timmy simply didn't know how to strike conversation after bawling his eyes out in front of two. This was made especially difficult due to the suffocating atmosphere, with Liliana staring daggers at the deadpanned Ava.

"Ahem," Feeling a bit out of place, Timmy cleared his throat, "W-well, uhm… I'd like to thank you guys for— for helping me out there. It was a bit tough."

"I don't suppose you have anywhere to go?" Liliana sighed.

"Nope." Timmy awkwardly chuckled.

They lapsed into another period of awkward silence until Ava was suddenly struck with a genius idea.

"Join us. You'll be a good pack mule." Ava suggested, earning a mixed gaze from Timmy.

For once Lilliana was in agreeance with Ava's ideas. They often travelled light due to their slim physiques which led to many problems in one way or another when travelling out in the wilderness. Especially with Liliana's NTW-20 taking up most of her carry capacity.

"Ava, did you prepare the map for Ursus?" Liliana asked, suddenly reminded of the absence of a map.

"Yes." She nodded

"Okay, pass."

"..."

"Where is the map, Ava?" Liliana narrowed her eyes at Ava's silence and inaction, causing the latter to sweat.

Crouching down, Ava grabbed a stick before drawing a couple lines in the dirt. Pointing at it, she mustered all her seriousness as she solemnly said, "Map."

"Where did that 50 LMD I gave you go?" Veins appeared on Liliana's forehead as she suppressed her urge to accidentally drop Ava off a cliff.

Sensing Liliana's hidden wrath through empathy, Ava quickly retreated behind Timmy. Caught between a rock and a hard place, he was tempted to sell out Ava but he felt guilty abandoning a lost child.

"Ava, I think someone needs to keep guard tonight." Liliana smiled, however, Ava knew better than to trust that smile.

"Mhmm, Timmy." Ava turned to Timmy, poorly attempting puppy eyes with her deadpan face.

"No, I don't think Timmy might be up for it. How about we get someone more responsible and mature to do it instead?" Lilliana stressed each word out, like grinding out gears. Ava had no choice but to concede.

Without an inkling of sleep, Ava straggled behind Timmy and Liliana like an orignium slug.

"Uhm, is she gonna be alright?" Timmy meekly asked, concerned about the sluggish Sankta despite her attempts to throw him under the bus last night.

"Give her some games, and she would've done that ten times over." Liliana replied as they aimlessly wandered the tundras for any sign of civilisation.

After what felt like decades, the trio finally found smoke rising in the distance. However, their hopes were quickly crushed when they heard cries in the distance followed by the shouts of Ursian patrol officers. The two Sanktas quickly realised that it was a purge, it would be best to avoid combat with Ursian officials.

Getting involved with the infected was always a bad idea. Something that the two had learned extensively during their travels.

However, this didn't apply to Timmy, who suddenly dashed towards the village prompting the two to reluctantly follow.

The screams pervaded the air. They weren't something he could ignore, and as he rushed closer to the village, they became more audible.

"No please! She's only a baby!" A mother cried, hugging her child.

"Stop!" Timmy attempts to interrupt.

"Shut up!" However, the townsfolk were ruthlessly cut down by the patrolmen's sabre. Their red visors reflected the dying Ursians before turning to Timmy, "And you… Don't meddle in what doesn't concern you."

The two Sanktas quickly caught up to Timmy, however it was too late as Timmy already unsheathed his weapon, drawing hostilities from the patrolmen. Liliana and Ava quickly readied their weapons; they weren't getting out of this peacefully.

As Timmy faced off a couple patrolmen, someone who seemed to be the leader stepped forward. Unlike the common rank and file uniforms, he wore a great overcoat layered with golden aiguillettes.

"Hmph, what are Sanktas doing here? Messing with official Ursus operations is punishable by summary execution. Though, I don't mind letting this go if you…" He didn't finish his sentence, but casted a lecherous gaze at Liliana and Ava.

"Bastard!" Seeing his overt actions, Timmy couldn't help but cuss, "Do you have no morals?!"

"Morals? Do you have a right to preach? Morals lie with the divinity of the Emperor, and he commands the extermination of these filthy infected."

However, before the patrol captain could delve into the philosophical righteousness of his cause, a loud bang interrupted him as his blood splattered across the frozen ground. Rapid fire also came from Ava, dropping the Ursian patrolmen like flies.

Within five minutes, the patrol squad was annihilated. Timmy wanted to check on the ruins of the village for survivors, however he was dragged away by Liliana immediately as they rushed away from the massacre.

"Their reinforcements will be arriving soon due to our gunshot. We need to leave immediately." Liliana ushered as they dashed deep into the Tundras, ignoring Timmy's opposition.

"But-" Timmy started, but shut up once he met Lilliana's frigid glare.

"We can't take on the fucking Ursian army, trust me. Even if we save them now, they'll be hunted sooner or later. You won't last in this world if you act like that." Liliana scolded as they took a short pause from running.

He wanted to argue, but the fact was, Timmy hardly knew the ins and outs of the world. Naive was a word that fit him well, he had been too rash.

"I apologise for screaming at you, but our lives are at stake here. Especially in the turbulent Ursus." Liliana sighed, seeing the downtrodden Timmy.

"Mmmhmm," Ava backed up her statement as she reloaded her MP40, making a threatening gesture as she cocked her gun.

The three decided to take a small break from their running. However, they couldn't let their guards down as they were far from safe. It could be assured that reinforcements are searching for them right now.
