Chapter 2: The Rules of Rebirth

[...This has to be one of the worst death causes I have read in the past 5000 years.]

An old man with neatly trimmed white beard looked at a file in his hands. His skin was dark and if you looked closely, you would find that he has an uncanny resemblance to Morgan Freeman. His white eye brows and mouth would twitch occasionally as he read. The name on the file was Takayuki Sho. 24 years old. The section that the old man was focusing on was the Circumstances Leading To Death. It detailed everything that happened. The words that Takayuki shouted at Truck-Kun, got an heart attack because he was too exicited and finally died by banging his head on the truck.. Each sentence was more ridiculous than the previous.

Being alone in this white space perpetually, the old man had developed a habit of talking to himself so he simply verbalised all the thoughts that came to his mind. He continued to mutter as a frown appeared on his face forming deep wrinkles on his forehead.

[I have set the hidden requirement for one's death to be related a truck on earth in order to be reincarnated into one of the fantasy worlds I govern. Looking at the shameful way this boy died, I think its about time to change my requirement. I haven't felt so speechless reading a file before.]

At this moment, Takayuki was lying down nearby. He seemed to have detected the mutterings of the old man and his ears moved slightly. The old man walked towards Takayuki, bent his back and stared intently at the young boy's face.

[Idiot. You are truly an idiot!]

The old man couldn't help himself as he exclaimed. Suddenly Takayuki's eyes opened and he sprung up on his feet. Pointing at the rude person in front of him, he shouted.

[Idiot? You are the idiot! Who calls someone they just met an idiot right in his face?]

Immediately, Takayuki saw a hand chop down onto the top on his head, followed by a gust of wind hitting his face. His eyes rolled to the back and he fainted. White foam started oozing out of his lips.

---- A few moments later ----

My eyes slowly opened as I regained consciousness. My mind is feeling abit groggy as if someone hit my head but I cant seem to remember.

[You are awake Takayuki-kun.]

I heard an old deep voice speaking to me. Although it was not loud, I felt the power from the words as if it could move the world. It has been a while since I had a conversation in Japanese and its weird to be conversing in Japanese with an african male.

[You have died. Based on the circumstances of your death, your soul has been delivered to me. I am in charge of any deaths that have any relation to trucks. Your people refer to me as Kami.]

[Kami-sama! I seem to have trouble remembering something.]

A guity look appeared on Kami-sama face as his eyes averted from my gaze. He immediately regained his calm and smiled faintly. I could literally see rays of light radiating from behind him. Kami-sama continued to speak. It made my mind calm down and it felt very comfortable.

[Ahem. Ahem. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, theres not much time left. You will be reborn in one of the fantasy worlds I govern. To maintain balance in our worlds, the gods have come up with a rulebook regarding rebirths. This prevents some of the more irresponsible gods from destroying their own worlds due to creating overpowered individuals. As your death was not due to a heroic act, the rule states that you are not entitled to power ups or blessings. However I would like to make it up to you for something that happened just now. So go ahead and wish for something not related to your own power.]

Memories of my past life were slowly coming back to me since the moment I woke up. I had accepted my own death, probably because I had an active part in it. Althought my memory is still pretty much fragmented I am sure of the request I would make of Kami-sama.

[There is no need to think further. I know what I want exactly. Please allow me to play basketball again!]

Kami-sama raised his left eyebrow and seemed pleasantly surprised by my request.

[I had expected you to say that but you seem unusally calm for someone who just died. Your file indicated that you spent your whole life training in basketball and your biggest regret is also related to it. I have a world that suits your interests. I will send you there. Since the destination is decided, there's only one more thing to inform you. This is also concerns one of the many rules of rebirth.]

Hearing Kami-sama's words, my body trembled in excitement. Actually to tell the truth, I did not want to die back there. I just lost my mind for a moment and was not thinking straight. Being promised a chance to play basketball again, I just felt so grateful.

I was an orphan back on Earth. My whole life was dedicated to playing basketball so I didn't have any meaningful relationships. Even my teammates were competitors in my eyes. It seemed that I had missed everything thats important in life. It was truly an unaccomplished and sad life. This time I will tresure anyone that comes my way and build lasting relationships.

[Takayuki Sho! You will be reborn as a slime!]

[Wha....a slime?]

Hearing that, my jaw dropped all the way to the floor. Wait a second. Wasn't I supposed to be able to play basketball. How is a creature with no hands going to do that! And not to mention, though I may not play alot of games, even I know that a slime is definitely weak!

[The rules of rebirth has a clause on reincarnation. The most significant event during the moments leading to your death forms the karmic link to the next lifeform you will assume. When the truck approched you, you simply stood there and experienced a heart attack. Afterwards you mindlessly banged your head on the truck. These actions have no relation to any monster traits. The only exception was the moment when a black bubble tea pearl hit the side of your face. The slimey texture of the pearl formed the basis of your karmic link to the body of a slime.]

Which asshole spit a pearl onto my face at such a critical moment! OH MY GAWD! I felt my head spinning from the shock. My vision went black as I fainted.
