Chapter 2: The Secretary
Elios was in a large room that looked like a hotel reception. There was a relatively attractive man seated at his desk reading a long scroll that rolled off both ends of the desk holding a quill in his left hand. Noticing Elios in the room, he glanced up and pushed his glasses up with his right pinky.
"Damn Elios, dying after you had all that big talk of becoming a 'better person'? That's honestly just embarrassing, and you died most pathetically. Also, that lady you helped wasn't actually in danger, everyone in that situation, including the lady and the driver of the car were agents. Yup, they killed you because they thought of you as a threat to society."
"Wait.. a threat? I've never done anything dangerous, and I wanted to become someone who could do something meaningful. Either way, I'm dead now. So, who are you?"
"Me? I'm your secretary. Yup, you're no longer in that last reality, and I was never there to begin with. I simply read your past."
"My secretary?" Elios thought to himself, wondering why he would need a secretary when he was dead.
Reading his thoughts, the secretary responded "Ahh, you've been reincarnated into this new world. Welcome! Yeah, you just died, and this is the sort of 'intermission zone' between the worlds. Most people in this world don't go here before being born, just you because you aren't native to this universe."
"Wait, so it's basically like I'm in a web novel? You're telling me I'm gonna become the strong badass main character who gets a harem and wins at life? HELL YEAH!"
"Exactly!" Exclaimed the secretary. "It's like you're in a web novel! Except for the part where you become strong, or the part where you're the main character or the part where you have a harem, or especially the part where you win at life. Yeah, none of that is happening for your loser ass. You were a loser before, and you're a loser now."
"Wow.. talk about harsh."
"Yeah.. I've read your past. Most people leave the reincarnation cycle after a couple of deaths. You died in your universe over 17 quintillion times, in 17 quintillion different realities, and you were a loser in every try. There were no other realities in your universe for your soul to go so it transferred over to the closest universe, which happens to be this one."
"Okay, I'm a loser, I get it. Do I get any powers for coming to this new universe or something? You claimed it's different from my own, so there must be magic or something."
"Uhm.. kind of? It's not really magic, they're called skills. It contradicts the name, but skills are the same idea as magic from your universe but they require no skill to use."
"Okay. How does the power system here work then?"
"Well, I'll explain the basics. The main power system would be skills, and there are 4 tiers of skills. The 4 tiers are 'Foundational skills', 'Lesser skills', 'Beyond skills', and 'Divine Skills'. Pretty much everyone has skills, the most common being foundational. The first 2 skill tiers are comprised of skills anyone can get, separated by how hard they are to get and how powerful they are. An example would be the Foundational skill "Small fireball" and the Lesser Skill "Fire Conjuration". If you have a skill, it requires no skill or talent to use, simply thinking about it will use the skill exactly how you want if it's under the umbrella of things the skill can do."
"This is getting kind of complicated, but go on.."
"Beyond skills and Divine skills are skills unique to one individual, and that means that those skills have never existed in history before in this universe. Beyond skills and Divine skills are made up of 'aspects' which are essentially mini skills under the umbrella of the same skill. If you have a skill with multiple aspects, you can use each of them individually as if they were independent skills, even though they aren't."
"Okay, but where do I come into this?" Elios asked, intrigued, like a golden retriever about to get a treat.
"Well, you honestly don't. You probably won't be a relevant character in this universe or do anything meaningful, but you've got a beyond skill I guess.."
