Chapter 5: Done with the ruse

'A bunch of amateurs,' Leon thought, staring down at the frozen raiders. 'Sure, I caught them with their pants down,' he thought, a small smirk surfacing on his lips in reaction to the small joke, 'but they make no effort to reorganize.'

Leon took his sweet time to stretch his back, patiently waiting for his opponents to recollect their wits.

'Damn,' Leon then cursed in his thoughts once his patience ran out. 'This is going to leave a bad taste in my mouth.'

And so, Leon took a step forward, lazily marching towards the raiders.

'I'm coming for you, can't you see?' he thought, a feeling of desperation welling up in his thoughts.

And the raiders... Finally came back to their senses.

The sight of two of their men dying, seemingly by an accident, shocked them for sure. And with no leading figure to spring them back into action, it took them a considerable amount of time to react.

"Those damn idiots..." a burly man said, shaking his head with disbelief.

He was donning a set of simple, plain pants with only the impressive fur of some kind of beast covering his otherwise naked torso. Adding a huge axe in his right hand completed the full picture of a barbarian-styled warrior.

The man shook his head once again only to point the weight of his weapon at Leon. "Kill that son of a bitch!"

The raiders finally woke up from their daze. Yet, there were no signs of panic amongst them.

It simply fell outside of their level of comprehension to believe that someone swaying around so much could be anything more than just a lucky son of a whore.

And so, three raiders dropped whatever they were looting or pleasuring themselves with, opting to deal with the annoyance instead.

After all, for a raid to go smoothly, there had to be no disturbances. Or in other words, all those who dared to oppose them had to go.

"This is where your luck ends, you idiot!" one of them shouted, swinging his sword above his head as he rushed straight for Leon.

"Leave some to me!" another one added, following closely behind.

'The last of the trio, the silent one,' Leon thought, keenly observing the situation with his half-squinted eyes. 'He might have some skill.'

Contrary to his two companions, the third of the attackers kept silent. He didn't bother wasting his stamina on flailing his crude axe, opting to observe how the events would play out first.

'I won't be able to fool him,' Leon thought calmly, swaying to the right to avoid a downward slash from the swordsman. He then kicked his right leg far forward, slamming the sole of his foot against the spearman behind.

'Now, fall to the ground,' Leon thought, boredom taking over his thoughts right when overextending his leg proved to be fatal for his pose. His back fell behind in a silly attempt to counteract the changing center of weight of his body, only to fail when Leon kicked too far.

With nothing to support him in an upright position and only one leg still on the ground, Leon fell down on his back, kicking a small cloud of dust as he did so.

The eyes of the silent raider flashed... and then, right as he brought his ax up and stepped forward to pin Leon down to the ground... their eyes meet.

"I've got you!" the swordsman cried out in amusement, ignoring his earlier miss and going right for a downward stab.

'Going right for my heart, how brutal,' Leon smirked, making half of a roll to his left, allowing the sword to slide past his side and cut into the ground.

Leon then simply rolled back to his back, easily forcing the sword's handle out of the attacker's hand while sending a leisurely fist straight into the man's solar plexus.

"Dfiee!" the spearman shouted, failing to utter his simple shout properly due to the blood coming out from his broken nose. He then charged down with his spear, hoping to impale Leon through his chest.

"For real?" Leon uttered a small voice, befell by utter disbelief. He then reached out... and simply grabbed the spear's wood, right above the mount of its blade. "You still didn't realize?" he added, snapping the blade away from the spear.

Expecting the resistance from both Leon's flesh and then the ground below him, the spearman failed to stop his dash.

And with a simple twist of Leon's wrist, he turned the snapped blade around, driving it straight into the man's heart.

'That's four,' Leon counted, turning his attention towards the silent axe-man.

But the man himself was now nowhere to be seen.

'There he is,' Leon thought a second later when he finally managed to locate the assailant.

Yet, contrary to his fallen comrades, he was currently too busy running for his dear life to have any shot at harming Leon at all!

'At least one of them had any brains,' Leon thought, raising his knees only to then kick his legs away, using the sudden burst of momentum to get right back to his feet.

"Nine left," Leon summarized the situation in a perfectly calm voice. He then leaned his head to the side, staring blankly at the remaining raiders. "Meaning, I no longer need to pretend."

Leon squatted down only to pick up the crude sword of the man he deprived of both the weapon and breath just a moment earlier. And then, with a quick swing of his newfound blade, he deprived the man of his head as well.

"Now then," Leon raised his eyes back up.

"KILL THE BASTARD!" the fur-bearing man cried out, the amusement in his eyes replaced with fury. "Pounce him together!" he then gave the instruction to his men before charging ahead himself.

"Raiders like you..." Leon leaned his head over his right shoulder. He then rolled his eyes as he stepped forward. "Hardly ever learn," he added, putting himself in a proper stance, right in time to intercept the vicious slash of an axe coming his way.
