Chapter 1: DEATH
For a 19-year-old, I'd had my fair share of life, and I must say, it holds the record for being the most pointless and most horrid thing to exist. I spent years hoping one day I'd die of some strange disease, even a boring death would have been nice, but of course, you never get anything you want, just a side order of pain for every failed wish was given to you.
"So you're going to do this Jake?" I asked sighing as I slowly walked back towards the edge of my school's building. In front of me were the so-called "Dons" of my school, the most feared bullies wingston high produced, one of their best works I must commend, but this time I was the bone of contention.
"Alexa there's no way you didn't know it would end up like this; see the thing is I got a reputation to uphold and if I don't always get what I want there'd be cracks in my reputation and we don't want that do we?" Jake said smiling as he signaled his boys to round me up.
"Truth is I never thought it'd end like this, but it's alright I'll take what I can get" I replied as I finally got to the edge of the roof.
"Well that's rather unfortunate, but it looks like there's nowhere to run now is there?" Alexa asked calmly
"Boys don't be rough with her, I want to savor her properly," Jake replied, his eyes shone with desire as he licked his lips. I watched as his goons approached me and sighed one last time.
"I give up then. I can't run anywhere might as well go out with dignity" I said smiling
"Perfe- Alexa!" Jake screamed as I lept off the roof. the sound of the wind rushing around me never felt better, I'd finally reached my end and it was in grand style. I landed headfirst on the concrete and everything went black. finally… peace.
"Ahem… young soul, please get up I've got a lot of work, working for death is no small task" I heard as I floated in the darkness.
wait! How was I aware of the darkness around me? This doesn't make any sense, I'm supposed to be dead…Questions raced through my mind.
"Please open your eyes and get up, miss Alexa. I don't know why the dramatic ones always do this, they get so absorbed in their death fantasy" The voice said then sighed.
At this point, I knew there was something wrong, but I did just as the voice asked and to my surprise, my eyes opened and my body responded and sat up. I was in a large white hall, it was empty asides from the large hourglass that floated at the center and a desk with a book on top of it.
'Shit heaven was real, I'm f?$#@ed' Alexa thought to herself as she frantically got up.
"well you aren't, this is just a hub between the other side and reality, you didn't go to the other side and reincarnate properly, you will go through what is called a bugged reincarnation in a matter of time, and seeing as death is not around and you've come at an interesting time I won't eradicate your soul," The man said staring at her.
"You just casually read my mind and tell me I'm supposed to go through some 'bugged reincarnation' like this a casual occurrence," Alexa said looking at the person speaking. it turned out it wasn't even a human but some sort of holographic projection, Alexa was confused and it wasn't hard to tell.
"Humans… as simple as ever. My name is Morpheus, I'm an intelligent virtual assistant created by death to help with the transmigration of souls from one reality to the other side or other worlds, depending on the conditions met" He said
"You are what is called a broken soul, death regards you like this because your souls detest life and existence itself, so when various conditions are met rather than transmigrate your stops here at the border where death erases your existence or on rare occasions lets you reincarnate manually, hence the term 'bugged reincarnation'" Morpheus continued
"This is a very rare occasion where death deems the individual useful and chooses to have them work for him, but occasionally I too allow a bugged reincarnation when I'm not around to deal with certain pests" Morpheus explained waiting for Alexa to respond.
"Damn… broken soul eh. Anyways I understand what you're saying, but how does this work and why pick me" Alexa asked. she'd been a major anime fan when she was alive so she assimilated the situation quickly, although it was overwhelming she was able to keep calm.
"I would understand why that term offends you but isn't it now a trivial matter?" Morpheus asked.
"True I'm dead now, but that's going to take a while to get used to. usually, when people die I don't imagine their aware of that fact" Alexa replied
"hmmm… fair point, anyways a bugged reincarnation means you'll go back to your world and body but no one will have any memory of your existence, although the people most affected by your death often have fragments left, it's best to avoid them," Morpheus said
"Uhmm do I get some sort of power or-" Alexa said before she was interrupted
"Such trivial things give you humans so much joy, but yes you will possess a unique ability and you have five chances at life. That means your soul will only be wiped completely if you are killed five times, as for the ability I have no idea what you'll get, it might be weak or powerful and is highly dependent on your personality" Morpheus said before heading towards the desk
"So what's in it for you? Power of this magnitude can't be free" Alexa asked as she headed towards him.
"Your first smart input in our conversation, well done. You are correct, to complete the process I must create a soul contract with you and you will fulfill my wish till you die or kill yourself. I must also warn you once again coming in contact with people who have fragments of your past existence is dangerous, there are other beings asides from death and if they notice your existence you'll be doomed" Morpheus said seriously.
"Okay I got it, I'll ask again what's in it for you?" Alexa asked glaring at him.
"I would like you to eliminate certain creatures, they aren't supposed to be in your world and it's stressful to deal with them alongside all this work up here. Before you fret, they are relatively weak and your body is enhanced after this reincarnation, so they shouldn't be a problem" Morpheus said flipping through the book in his hand.
"I never thought I'd want to ever go back, but this seems fun. I accept" Alexa said smiling, she lacked thrill or power in her previous life and hated every day but now what would it be like if she had power.
"Perfect" Morpheus said as he closed the book and tapped Alexa's head lightly.
"All the information you need and various tools can be accessed using the ring I placed on your finger, it also represents our contract and is bound to your soul so it can't be removed, enjoy yourself," Morpheus said smiling as Alexa blacked out an turned into a beam of light.
"I see you've created another one of us," a young man said as he approached Morpheus.
"what can I say, I got work to do and it has to be done"
