Night had fallen, the weather was bad and the only thing disturbing this relative calm was a car. She sped along the road bordered by the fir forest, piercing the curtains of rain that the wind was blowing. A blond man of twenty-five was driving it, his hands clenched on the steering wheel and his eyes fixed on the road. Suddenly, thunder began to rumble and startled the driver.
- Try to relax, the seated woman whispered to him, putting her hand on his shoulder.
This woman had long black hair, gathered under an orange silk scarf. His thin face seemed serene, but his green eyes betrayed his concern. She turned her head to the little boy sitting in the back. Barely two years old, the young Callum slept in the back, clutching in his hands a small stuffed rabbit that he had named “puffy”.
- I'm relaxed, Laura. replied the man. I know I don't look like it, but I'm calm.
- You think we made the right choice, asked the woman.
- Not the right choice, replied the man. But the least bad.
The woman looked at him anxiously before shaking little Callum's hand. The rest of the trip was done without anyone saying a word. Only the hum of the engine and the drumming of the rain on the windows broke the silence that reigned in the car. Ten minutes later, the car had to leave the small forest road to reach the suburbs of New York. The couple headed for a duplex villa, bordered by a small garden and similar to the other villas of the subdivision of which it was a part. Turning off the engine, the man looked at his watch.
- What is it? asked the woman.
- Nothing, it's ten o'clock. We did it quickly. Wake up Callum and take him with you. I'll go get my sister.
The man knocked on the door and a blonde woman in her mid-thirties answered the door.
"Oliver," she exclaimed. You were quick.
- I told you it was urgent, Sophia.
- I know, but I didn't expect you to arrive so quickly.
"We can come in," Laura asked, holding little Callum by the hand.
- Yes, of course Laura.
Sophia moved aside, letting Oliver, Laura and Callum in. Suddenly, a clap of thunder sounded and made Callum cry.
- No, no no, don't cry my baby. Laura whispered.
- Go into the living room, Sophia ordered them. Hannah, please take care of your cousin.
- Okay mom, came a voice from upstairs.
A five-year-old girl with thick blond hair rushed from the top of the stairs to hug young Callum. He stared at his parents leaving and heading towards the living room, accompanied by Aunt Sofia. The adults talked to each other for long minutes. Hannah tried to lead her cousin upstairs, but the young boy refused to move.
After a while, everyone stood up. Callum threw himself into the arms of Laura, his mother.
- Callum, my darling, she told him. You have to listen to me.
She started to sob, but Oliver, Callum's father, put his hand on her shoulder.
- You're going to stay with Aunt Sophia and your cousin Hannah for a while.
- Why, asked the young Callum who did not understand what was going on.
- Because your dad and I have to go somewhere. We'll come back for you when we're done.
- What are you going to do?
Laura wanted to answer, but Oliver answered for her.
- Parenting stuff. Very boring stuff, and that's why you can't come with us.
- Okay.
Laura hugged her son.
- I love you so much my Callum, she sobbed. I love you so much.
Oliver helped Laura up and led her to the door, his arm around her shoulders.
- Daddy, called little Callum.
- Be good, Oliver replied. I love you, my boy.
The door closed and Callum stood there, his arms dangling and not really understanding what had just happened.
- Don't worry, Sophia whispered to him. Everything will be alright.
