Chapter 2: The Past (1)

A young girl stood in the public cemetery in the heart of a New York as heavy rain continued pouring, mixing with her tears to the point of no return.

No other soul could be seen for miles giving the cemetery a more uncanny image.

The young Ivy fell to her knees in front of her mother's grave as she cried her heart out,

"Why mother, why did you do all this for? Whom did you do all this for? Your whole life you were misunderstood by the people around you, by your family... by your husband... by your parents.

So then why did you have to die for us, for those who will not even know about the sacrifice that you made for them? Why mum?.... just why?"

She continued crying as the memories of her mother passed in her mind.

Her mother, Ava Crompton was one of the daughters of the Crompton family, later in her life, she married Gilbert Brown and had a daughter, had her Ivy Brown.

She could have decided to live blissfully if she wanted but, she decided to take the rougher road when she secretly joined the army without telling anyone.

This is what her grandfather, William Crompton, came to know when she suddenly died in a car accident.

Which the police had already written off as a case of drunk driving.

This fact did not come as a surprise to him, as for someone whose entire family was known for their involvement in the Armed Forces, this, came to him as a fact.

But little did he knew that in reality, she had joined the army when she was just 20 years old, 3 years before her marriage.

Ivy too came to know the truth just this morning when she received the letter left by her mother for her in her will.

In her letter, her mother asked for forgiveness, for not being a bigger part of her life, for not being there when she was needed.

In it, she also wished for Ivy to live happily and peacefully.

She also told her the real reason why she was ignoring Ivy in her life, it was because of the mission she was involved with.

If her enemies came to know how much she cared for her daughter, then she would also become a target for them, and she did everything in her power to prevent it.

People thought that she was an ignorant mother who did not want a child in her younger years and this is why simply neglected the child after its birth but little did they knew about the amount Ava dotted on her daughter, she loved her so much that she was willing to be hated and despised by her own flesh and blood instead of seeing her in harms way.

She was ready to be hated by the person she loved the most in the world just to keep her safe.

That was the amount as to how much Ava Crompton cherished her daughter.

In the beginning, after Ivy's birth Ava was reluctant to leave her young daughter at home, so she sometimes took her with her to visit the rest of her comrades in the army when she was little, but of course without letting anyone know.

Ivy too forgot about most those fond memories which she made with her mother as she grew older.

Ivy looked around dejectedly at the empty cemetery, knowing that her mother would become one of the people about whom the world may not know despite it being her sacrifice which kept all of them safe.

Her mother was so alone even in death as Ivy saw that none of her family showed up, and some outsiders and relatives who had earlier showed up, left after a couple of minutes when they saw that the peoples whose favor they wanted to gain were in fact not present there.

She simply sat there, out in the rain for hours as she silently remembered her mother.

When the rain suddenly stopped pouring, she looked upwards only to find two soldiers with an umbrella behind her. The one with a buzz haircut spoke to her in a rough voice.

"Ms. Brown, please follow us, we have something to discuss with you.''

Ivy was already cold by standing in front of the grave for such a long time and had also run out of tears to shed for the woman who gave birth to her, seeing no other reason to stay beside her mother for the time being she followed them into an army vehicle waiting at the gate.

She already had a rough idea as to why these people were looking for her, looking back at her mother's grave she vowed in her heart,

'The next time we meet mother would be only after I bring your murders to justice.'
