Chapter 17: They Weren't Strong Enough
Shen Bi Ru looked at Gu Shang imposing figure standing there tall and proud as the rising sun cast it's golden light on him.
His troops stood behind him with the purple Qilin insignia flattering as the warm breeze passed the the area, she suddenly remembered that year.
She may not remember how old they were but Gu Shang childish voice at that time rang through her head.
A young childish silver haired boy stood in front of her and patted his chest, " Don't worry, when I grow up I'm gonna be the strongest person in the world and I'll protect you" the young Gu Shang had declared boldly.
The figure of the young Gu Shang blured, before being replaced by a young man with silver hair wearing black robes with golden purple Qilin pattern on them.
His robes flattered in the breeze, Shen Bi Ru got up and approached Gu Shang.
Her father wanted to stop her, but he was too late.
"Was this girl trying to wipe out their family" he cried bitterly.
One of the soldiers wanted to stop her but Gu Shang stopped them.
Shen Bi Ru walked absent mindedly until she arrived in front of Gu Shang, " Have you come to fulfill your promise to me?" She asked still dazed.
Gu Shang frowned, what was she talking about, was she going crazy?
"What promise?" He asked without any warmth in his voice.
"You promised to become strong and protect me, do you remember?" She asked.
The few people who knew about her relationship with Gu Shang couldn't help but feel pity for her. She and Gu Shang could be considered childhood sweetheart's, but alas the world of the adults changed them and made them enemies.
Liu Feifei knew of this and couldn't help but pity her a bit.
Shen Bi Ru had abandoned Gu Shang for Gu Lin because of power and influence, but now the love she sacrificed to chase more power, had become the most powerful.
The heavens were really playing a cruel joke on her.
Gu Shang remembered that childhood promise. He had said it on a whim and didn't mean it, he literally had no such ambitions until he was forced to joined the army as a human shield.
Fate really worked in mysterious ways.
"Oh! That childhood promise we made as children? Don't tell me you seriously expect me to follow it, do you? Gu Shang sneered.
This woman was really delusional, they had been good childhood friends, but all of a sudden, she had joined Gu Lin to bully him and call him names.
Shen Bi Ru was actually the first person to ever betray him, his childhood heart had felt so broken at that time and he had cried his eyes out.

"I'm.. I'm sorry" she lost consciousness after she said that, the pressure and shock was too much for her to bear.
She fell on Gu Shang arms after passing out, Gu Shang called a soldier over and shoved her into his hands, " take her back to her father"
After the unconscious Shen Bi Ru was brought to her father, "Next time take care of your daughter and make sure she doesn't bother me" He warned, he knew how stubborn and persistent Shen Bi Ru could get.
The old man nodded almost hitting his head on the stone cold floor.
The young heirs who were at the Qing Clan manor banquet yesterday couldn't help but feel like they were the biggest idiots in existence.
If they had just been a little friendly with Gu Shang, their lives could have been changed, but because of pride and arrogance they've lost the chance to form connections with Gu Shang.
They felt like hanging themselves. The Zhao Clan young mistresses Zhao Qiuqiu couldn't help but look at Gu Shang with her eyes twinkling.
She had actually awed the prince of the north yesterday, she couldn't help but blush thinking about Gu Shang positive comments towards her.
The students from the imperial academy were blown away, the beautiful women had already become Gu Shang fan girls.
"This was what true power looked like" one of the women said with admiration. They couldn't help but envy Liu Feifei.
The men from the academy wanted to worship Gu Shang, he was practically the same age as them, yet he was so powerful and carried such a domineering aura.
He was definitely a role model to them.
Gu Shang moved towards the Qing Clan area and stood above them.
He glanced at the headless cops of the heir of the Moonshade Sect before focusing his attention on Qing Ying.
"Look like I killed your friend, do you have any problems with that? He asked.
"No I don't, he refused to bend the knee so it was only right he met his end"
Gu Shang narrowed his eyes, since he arrived in the capital, the Qing Clan were the most difficult clan to deal with, they literally had no flaws.
He had wanted to target them but found nothing on them. They were very clean and free of any crimes he could pin on them.
He also had to admit that Qing Ying was an extraordinary woman, she remained calm and composed in this situation without flustering or anything.
It looked like she had all things under control.
Gu Shang casually glanced at the elders who had wanted to kill him if he refused to join them.
The elders shuddered as the felt Gu Shang cold eyes on them.
"You old things are lucky, I'll spare your lives on behalf of miss Qing Ying who had showed me great hospitality at your manor.
And to your offer do you still need an answer? Gu Shang asked expressionlessly.
"No..no we wouldn't dare to think of such a preposterous thing, if there's anything the prince of the north should be the one recruiting us.
We don't even have the right to stand before you with our heads held high, how can we dare to recruit you"
Qing Ying maneuvered her way out of that risky conversation with cold sweat.
What a joke! Gu Shang was the most powerful man in the empire currently, who would dare to be bold enough to say, they take him under their wings.
It was already a miracle that he forgave them, what else could they ask for?
Gu Shang took one glance before turning to leave but not without adding a warning, "Qing Ying remember my warning! I'll be watching you from now on" he said before leaving.
A black dragon horse was brought forward, this horse was different from the rest, it had horns and scales making it look mighty and imposing, this breed were breeds that had pure dragon lieniage in them.
On the horse, four golden sword in their sheath was strapt to the left side of the horse, and on the right a golden bow and sword were strapped there.
The golden sword on the right gave a different aura as compared to the other four swords, it made people want to bow down and worship it.
Gu Shang pattered the dragon horse for sometime before jumping on it.
He glanced at the Liu Feifei and said, " it's about time you move in with me, isn't it?
The old general of the Liu family immediately nodded his head and agreed in place of her grand daughter.
His expression went cold as he glanced at the Gu Clan members, "I hope you remember my words, three days ago I gave you guys sn ultimatum, tomorrow I'll come for my mother, she better be the way I remembered her" he said coldly.
"Yes my lord, it will be done!" The old leader nodded.
Before Gu Shang left, he looked at fatty Su and nodded at him before looking at Mr Xu who was still on his knees.
"In history, those general who never got to live their full potentials and were killed by scheme weren't simple strong enough, in the face of true strength all schemes become useless"
He pulled the rein of his dragon horse and galloped into the capital with his men.
Mr Xu knelt there stunned.
