Chapter 2: Chapter 2: He escaped

Zayden POV

Looking across the table, I spot a young accounting director.

"This is MY company you are stealing from!” I shout, the board members jump. As I approach the accounting director, I place my hands on his shoulders and squeeze him. He squirms under my grip. His eyes widen as he looks at me, "I'm so sorry, Sir, my wife is sick, and I cannot afford her treatment."

Keeping my grip, I look up at my vice president, who is also my beta. A folder is thrown in front of him. Smirking, I say, "Open it."

He opens the file and starts shaking.“Sir, I mean CEO Zayden..."

I let out a laugh, "Please share the contents of the folder with the board."

His face turns pale when he looks up at me. As I snarl, "If you can't share, I will." I grab the folder from him, and he glances down at the table. "Mr. Wilson was having an affair. He was caught multiple times at a hotel with his mistress. The money stolen from me was used to buy clothes, jewelry, and an apartment for her." I look up and glare at him. I couldn't keep my rage inside. As I lean down to him, “How dare you steal from me and cheat on your wife?” I whisper in his ear; he lets out a small whimper.

"My wife is in charge of our bank account, so I used the stolen money so she wouldn't notice money missing from it." He says, "I'm sorry, but I don't love her anymore. I want a divorce, but I haven't yet done so." I laugh, I grab him by the throat.

I am beyond angry. I have been matless for centuries, wondering when I will meet my mate; I used to long for a Luna. Having given up long ago, I just assumed the moon goddess had cursed me. However, cheating spouses drive me to the brink. Today, more than ever, I feel like I am on edge. He's gasping for breath as he dangles off the ground. It is tempting to throw this idiot out the window.

My beta puts his hand on my shoulder. “Zayden, forget about it. Security will take him out and we will contact the authorities."

I growl, “No.” I hear my beta sigh.

He mind links, ‘Calm down, Alpha. This cannot be done before all of these humans. The color of your eyes is changing. Your wolf is beginning to emerge.’ I let out a deep breath and throw him on the ground. I walk to the head of the table and sit down. Matthew calls security and Mr. Wilson is led out of the room. While running my hands through my hair, I smile and ask, "Shall we continue our meeting?"

As I lay in bed, I stare up towards the ceiling. I feel out of control today. I don't know why my wolf has been on edge. However, I nearly killed the man at the board meeting today. I throw my blanket aside and get up. As I walk towards my balcony, I open the doors. Having let the winter nights wash over me, I decide it is a good time for a midnight run. I contact my security team that will be on duty tonight to let them know I will be out running.

Outside of New York City, I own a piece of land for my pack. Looking up at the sky, I say "Shift.". The Lycan takes over, happy to be able to run since I haven't shifted for a long time. Taking off into the forest, I let the fresh air flow through my fur and try to relax.

Initially, I didn't pay attention, but then I stop and sniff the air. Something isn't right.

A low growl escapes me as I feel an intrusion on my land. A man emerges from the shadows. He shows no fear when he sees me.

I growl harder, at which point the man smirks and laughs, "Well, look at the mighty Alpha!"

I snarl, who is this man? There is no scent on him, and he doesn't seem to be human or wolf.

"Zayden..." His voice was menacing and dark

Suddenly, he vanishes. What the hell? Turning around, I search for him. I couldn't find him. Then, I turn around and see him standing toe-to-toe with me. "I'm back."

He had a look of intent to kill in his eyes. Those stares are familiar to me. Devlin.

I could not contain myself anymore. I pounce at Devlin, hitting him on the ground with both my front paws.

His pitch-black eyes are fixed on me as he grins and before I realized it, he was gone, and he was over by a tree.

He laughs at me, “Zayden your anger hasn’t changed much over the centuries.” I shift back into my human form.

“How are you here Delvin. How did you escape your hell?”

Devlin chuckles and looks up at the sky, “You see Zayden, it appears in this century that humans are more curious creatures than they were in the past. You know the saying: curiosity killed the cat.”

He smirks, “Their curiosity pulled me from my cage. Unfortunately for them, their curiosity made for a delicious meal.”

He turns his back to me and lets out a sigh, “I am not at my full strength yet, I have no need to fight you right now Zayden. But I couldn’t help myself, I wanted to see the mighty Alpha.”

He looks over his shoulder, “It’s nice to see you’re doing well. But I must be on my way. I have a family to hunt, that damn family’s ancestor was the reason for me to be locked away. That witch’s family will be no more.”

I laugh at Devlin, “Are you scared that they might have a witch that could put you back in your prison?” He gives me a glare, “You weren’t stuck in that hell for centuries. That damn witch, I will kill every last one of those filthy beings.” He lets out a frustrated breath, “I’ll be going now Zayden, I’ll be back to claim once was mine. For now, I’ll let you keep your peace.” With that, he vanishes.

I shouldn't have let him escape, but when I jumped on him, his body seemed like a mist, possessing no shape. In his earlier days, he was known for his magic, but the spells he cast were evil. He would turn humans against one another while watching them fight. His title is not a coincidence. The Vampire King. Centuries have passed, and I didn’t think he would be released.

I must find that witch’s family before him, last I knew they were in New Orleans. If I can get them on my side, we could get rid of Devlin once again. Devlin, that bastard will turn this world upside down if I let him live. I shift back into my wolf form and go back to the packhouse. I mind link my security team and demand they meet me in the gathering hall.

I sit down at the head of the table and look at everyone, they all sense my anger and rage from my wolf even though I tried to hide it, “Someone snuck onto my land, I am not sure how he snuck passed those who are on night duty. But I hope you won’t let it happen again.” I slam my fist on the table, some of the warriors jump.

I continue, “That bastard Devlin has escaped his prison, I need you to find out how.”

I look towards Wayne, my gamma. “Yes, Alpha.”

I run my fingers through my hair, “Also, the witch that sealed Devlin, find out where her kin are. I need this as soon as possible. The last I knew they were in New Orleans; I will be flying there. Please have them report to me by tomorrow night if not sooner. I want you all on your toes and be on the lookout for anything suspicious.”

I glare out at my pack and in unison they respond, “Yes Alpha.”

I nod my head, “Good, you are all dismissed.”

Matthew, my beta, walks over to me, “You sure it’s Devlin, that evil son of a b-.”

I wave my hand at him “Yes that vampire is back. I couldn’t smell him. But I know that crazy b*stard from anywhere.” I sigh, “He will go start a war. I need to find that family.”

Matthew puts his hand on my shoulder, “I’ll get things in order, and we can fly out in a few hours.”

I nod my head, “It’ll be a bloody war if he gains his strength back.”

“I know Alpha, we won’t let that happen, our pack and your strength won’t let that happen. You are the next Alpha King.” Matthew is right, I didn’t go through centuries fighting and bringing packs together, for that bloodthirsty snake to disrupt my work.

“You're right Matthew.” I stand up and pat his shoulder, “We will get rid of him once and for all.” I walk past my beta and prepare to leave my packhouse.
