Chapter 3: Deal

Lionel's ethereal figure slowly descended through a sea of thoughts. Each thought was a bubble that surrounded him as his consciousness sank deeper. His body felt light. The bubbles of memories floated up around his figure. He saw his mother laughing while his father spun her around. In another bubble he felt the warmth of the sun on his face. Images of his childhood slowly floated up past him as his subconscious guided him further down into the abyss.

The deep voice from before could be heard as a distant low rumble. Lionel's ability to think in his current situation was slowed and lethargic. Although he could hear the voice and tell it was directed at him, he was unable to comprehend it's speech. As Lionel reached the lowest point he could feel pressure on the feet of his ethereal figure. He glanced up and saw the bubbles of his memories in the distance. They surrounded a brilliant white light which began to fade as soon as Lionel laid eyes on it.

As darkness spread the voice seemed to grow closer. "It seems I was in luck to have found a Siphon."

Lionel's mind seemed to start working again, slowly at first. He glanced around him in the pitch blackness and saw nothing. He tried to determine where the rumbling voice came from; it sounded as if it resonated with the darkness.

"You have accepted my Will but you have not won my Loyalty."

At those words a candle seemed to light close to Lionel. His ethereal eyes squinted to alleviate the pain of the sudden light. He could see a cloaked silhouette of a figure shrouded in darkness.

as Lionel went to speak the light vanished and he felt his body for the first time. He ached all over and he felt his right shoulder stabbing into something hard. He tried to move his arms but they wouldn't budge. His wrists felt like they were on fire. it felt like they were tied behind his back. When he opened his eyes his vision was blurry and his head was pounding.

A dry raspy voice spoke. "Ah, the thief is finally awake."

Lionel's vision cleared as he took in the environment around him. It seemed he was in a horse drawn wagon with a canvas cover. He noted that there was no typical sway of a wagon. The whitish color fabric that housed the wagon was illuminated from the outside. His hands were bound behind his back. Lionel turned his face to where the driver would be. Sitting in a dark grey robe was what appeared to be an ancient man. His face was pale, paper thin and waxy. Lionel could even make out the veins that traveled across the elder's face. There was a serious expression on the antiquated man.

"Are you going to sit there and ogle me all day?" the old man spoke with a crooked grin. "or are you going to tell me why you stole my Velthum?"

Lionel tried to mouth his response but his words were barely audible

"What? Spit it out now boy."

Lionel spoke more forcefully. "I didn't steal anything. I was looking for Drindle"

"Well you found him. What did you want from me besides my Velthum?"

Lionel could scarcely believe what he saw. The old man whose back was crooked over, who looked as if any second he would die, was Drindle in the flesh. His alert, pale, blue eyes were the only thing that gave him any air of vitality.

"Boy, you best answer me when I speak"

The impatience on his face made Lionel answer quickly.

"My parents were killed by Gardgans. I thought you could help me get rid of them." As he spoke he tilted his face away from Drindle. Lionel felt incredibly weak and ashamed. He didn't have the power to get rid of the Gardgans and instead had to rely on someone else. Someone who he knew little to nothing about. Silence followed Lionel's response.

It took a full two minutes before Lionel looked back to where Drindle was sitting. Drindle had a strange look on his face, almost as if he was contemplating something.

after a few more moments of silence Drindle's expression changed into a quizzical one. He drew his overgrown eyebrows up into an arch. "Why would I even help you?"

Lionel laid there for a moment and replied in a timid voice. "I will do anything, to avenge my parents."

Drindle's eyes lit up when he heard that statement. "You have a deal." as he spoke Lionels wrist bindings fell off and he was able to move freely.

"Where were these Gardgans located?"
