Chapter 3: Charming Scoundrel Travels...

"When the sun falls, the creatures of the night move. Although some may look like us, they aren't human. Does anyone know why?" The teacher questioned, yet none of the young students could answer.

Suddenly a young three-year-old boy raised his hand. "Teacher, what are the creatures of the night?"

"Legend has it that they are bloodthirsty beasts who devour naughty children who don't listen to their parents."

The children gulped, and a tense atmosphere arose.

"Do you all understand?" the teacher asked not to explain the difference between humans and demons; perhaps she didn't know herself, or maybe she could not say in order not to destroy the children's innocence.

The children nodded and said, "we understand", momentarily promising to behave well with their parents.

"Understand," a young guy about three years old told with an immature voice, half a beat slower than the rest of the children.

The kid was young. His hair was long and pitch black, and eyes even darker than the night. He wore a yukata that was clearly too big for his frail body, but it all only added to his charm, which was emphasised by his big smile.

The older children couldn't help but smile at little Shoku as his smile merely washed the previous tension away. "Okay, the class has ended, go and play, little ones", the teacher stated and was met by the cheers of the children who started to run around.

The adults watching the class laughed as well. The village had many children; hence all children were put into a single class ranging from the youngest three-year-old Kazuya Shoku to Kazuya Yuki, who was 15 years and was like the big sister of all the children.

"Come on, Shoku, we gotta go back to mum and dad, remember you gotta go work with dad now in the smithy so you can't be late" Yuki held her little brother's hand as he muttered a few hmphs and grunts. Sad about having to go to his dad's smithy again.

(Shoku POV)

'Dammit, ever since my prank, I had to go to school and stay with my old man in his smithy. Hmph, the only thing good is that I will be able to escape Mother deathly grip' I shivered and rubbed my sore cheeks. "Okay big sis" I held my sister's hand, and we started to walk. Well, I was still waddling.

The path to my house was quite long, so I merely looked around the village once again, examining the beautiful scenery. It was rather surreal, similar to a dream. Towering trees lined the pathway home, and wooden houses were spaced apart. Pure white clouds sat above my head, and birds soared through the sky. The rumbling sounds of children laughing and the calm water trickling through the river created a soothing tune throughout the village.

Leaving the little school, I didn't forget to blow a kiss to all my admirers and wink. Immediately after high pitched cries of joy erupted, even one from Uncle Bob who's deep roar inspired by my cuteness, overpowered the girl's screams of love. I shivered.

"Yuki come on, we gotta get home quick," I said with urgency. As I bolted through the dirt pathway hurrying home, I reached speeds like no other and not even my childish body could stop me. Not bothering to appreciate the scent of flowers, I arrived home.

Arriving, I was greeted by my dad grinning, "So boy, you thought you could escape from me, huh…." It was honestly saddening to see that I would still be punished, yet my dad had already been forgiven. What could I say? My parents were a loving couple.

Walking into the smithy, my legs felt like they were on fire from running away from school. Collapsing on the ground, my dad picked me up quickly. "Shoku, what's wrong? Are you okay? ".

"W-Wa-Waa'ah (Water)", I said, gulping enough saliva trying to satisfy my thirst. My request was merely ignored, and I gave the man a hateful glare which he quickly returned. We entered the smithy, leaving Yuki, who was dumbfounded by our petty arguments.

Yuki gave out a silly smile. "Well then, I will leave you two boys to argue. I'm gonna go, help mum".

I waved goodbye to my big angelic sis and walked into the familiar workplace. The smell of charcoal assaulted my nose, and a raging heat caressed my body. I looked up only to see a strange mask my dad always kept.

The majority of the mask was coloured a pinkish red with various shades. A single cheek was puffed up, and a long thin nose stood out, resembling that of a character of a story my Grandmother told me, "Pinocchio".

I walked up towards a shelf and picked up a mini carving knife accompanied by a single block of wood. The blade was quite dulled, and the wood had numerous cuts.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

The sound of my dad hitting the metal rang continuously and drew my eyes towards him. In his hands was a sword. It was pure white, and the sheath right beside it had white and red patterns. Just looking at it, you could tell it had a story like no other and had lived throughout history.

"Dad w-what is that?" I pointed to the sword.

"Oh, you're interested, I thought you didn't care about forging, and you would only stay as a craftsman." Hayate had a grin on his face looking at his eager son. "Why don't you continue your carving of wood and let the adult handle metal, but I will satisfy some of your curiosity… It's called Yoake".

I snorted and walked away, sitting on a small wooden bench I had crafted. For the past few months, I had been making things. What I loved most was carving mini statues of people, animals and scenery. I want to capture the moment.

Hours passed as the father-son duo focused on their works. The only sounds were heavy breathing, the clank between hammer and metal, and wood chipping. 'Gaaaaah, why can't I make anything new? I need to find some inspiration,' I thought to myself.

"Dad, I'm gonna go to the mountains to find some research material" I grinned and whipped off the wood chips from my clothes. I stared at dad only to see another sword in his hand with a single word on its handle, Yūgure.

"Alright, but be back quickly and tell your mum!" Dad yelled, looking at me than looking back towards the twin swords in his hands, his eyes seemingly lost within the swords glare as he reminisced…

Dreamy Mountains…

I walked around the forest with my short stubby legs. I had asked mother for permission and had rushed here with my carving knife in my hand.

The mountain deserved its name for having the most beautiful views. It looked to be completely untainted by human hands. Suddenly on the horizon, I see an extensive and luxurious structure. In front were several women following a single man.

It struck a chord in my heart and my soul. I didn't know what the feeling was, but I could feel my body tremble and shiver—my heartbeat-like drums rung.

Thump! Thump! Thump!

I took a deep breath and analysed the man. He was tall and slim, wearing a tight red turtleneck shirt covered by a black coat. On his head was a crown-like hat lined with gold. The man had a pair of eyes that contained the world's colour plastered on a pale face.

He suddenly gazed in my direction and smiled. Seeing the smile, I tensed, not knowing why?

"Oh, look like we have a visitor. Let me introduce myself. I'm…"

A/N: The plot thickens, also; if you couldn't tell, he wasn't falling in love with the mystery character. Can anyone guess who it is? Anyways if you are enjoying the novel, please stuff it in your library, and if you hate the story, go ahead and throw some stones at me, which pack some power…

You get it? Power stones. If I made you laugh or not, gimme yo Power stones. This is a robbery.

If any of you are wondering what the sword names mean, I will give you the definition if you want.

Yūgure - Means twilight or Dusk, but for the plot, let us treat it as Dusk, but twilight also works.

Yoake - Means Dawn.
