Chapter 26: Demon History (Part 1)
After Lucifer finished teaching Trinity what she would need to do to fix the link between her and Zyxel, Trinity grew concerned if she would remember it all.
<<Repeat it back to me again!>> Lucifer demanded.
Trinity repeated the incantation back to him.
<<Repeat it again!>>
Again, Trinity repeated it. She was starting to wonder if this was what it had been like for Zyxel teaching her the first Demon Chant incantation, when he had possessed her.
'How much longer do we have to keep this up? It feels like we've been working at it for hours!' Trinity grumbled in her mind, making sure to focus her thoughts to send it only towards his direction.
Lucifer glared at her through narrowed eyes. <<Until I am satisfied that you will remember it when I send your spirit back. One wrong syllable spoken can be all the difference between you doing this correctly, or messing this up entirely!>>
'Alright, fine. I get it.' Trinity grumbled in her mind.
Trinity continued on with repeating the incantation over and over again. Every time she finished, he would have her repeat it yet again.
Finally, Lucifer nodded in approval. <<I think you're ready. Now remember, once you start the incantation, it cannot be interrupted. With how long he has gone without the link working properly, he may not be in his right mind when you find him. He may try to stop you, if not possibly even attack you, depending on his current state of mind.>>
'I understand. But before you send me back, I want to know. How do you even know about the Demon Chant, or how it works? How do you know how to fix it?'
Lucifer didn't reply and just tilted his head and gave a slight smirk, waiting to see what theories she might come up with on her own.
'You helped create the original spell, didn't you? That's how they were able to make sure that an angel couldn't hear the incantation when it was spoken.'
Lucifer grinned and nodded. <<I was curious if you would be able to figure it out on your own, if given the chance. Yes, I did assist in the creation of the original spell. However, I am not the only one of us who helped them to make it either.>>
'Why would you help make it?' Trinity asked.
<<To understand why the Demon Chant was necessary for them, you first have to understand what happened to them in the first place. Gods, devils, angels, and demons did not always used to fight between each other. There was a time when both sides worked together in harmony. Creation does not always mean that it will be good, and destruction does not always mean that it's bad. We were made to keep a balance between each other. That all changed when the devils and demons started to undergo an unexpected change; but what happened to them was not their fault.>> Lucifer replied with sorrow in his voice.
Trinity tilted her head as she looked at Lucifer in curiosity. She remembered that Zyxel had mentioned to her once before about how demons had experienced side effects of some kind of evolution, but he refused to talk about it any further with her. Could this be the change that he was referring to? 'What happened to them exactly?'
As soon as she asked that, Lucifer's piercing gaze fell on her. <<Are you truly ready to know his past this time?>>
Trinity found herself nodding without a moment's hesitation.
<<Then let me explain a brief history into his past, because you will need to be aware of some of this when you return. Of Zyxel's two forms that you have seen, which do you think is his true form? The demon, or the humanoid form?>>
A crease formed across Trinity's forehead as she furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. The answer seemed kind of obvious to her, so why would he even need to ask? 'The demon form, of course! Honestly, I didn't even know that demons could make themselves appear human, until he revealed himself to me in his human form. He switches between the two forms freely, but he knows how awkward his demon form makes me feel, so he usually avoids it.'
Lucifer smirked. His eyes glimmered with amusement and she could hear him laughing softly in her mind. <<Now, here is something I would like you to think about before I proceed with the story. If humankind was made in God's image, and both the gods and the angels both appear human in form, why do you assume that their own twin would not look human as well?>>
Trinity's mouth dropped as she couldn't believe that she had never thought about that before. She lowered her head in shame and shook her head. 'I didn't think about that.'
Lucifer nodded. <<The gods and the angels, the devils and the demons; both became divided when it came to humanity. But not in the way that your history teaches you.>> He looked sad as he spoke these words. <<The gods and the angels cared more about nurturing humans, but only to suit their own desires. They did not see humanity as a living being, but rather a means to an end.>> He pointed at Trinity's wrist, where he had grabbed her before. <<We feed from humans through touch.>>
Trinity opened up her mouth to ask what exactly it was that the gods and the angels fed off of from humans, but Lucifer quickly continued on with his story before she could utter a sound.
<<However, humans were later discovered to be flawed, and it seemed that no matter how much we attempted to guide them, they still always chose a path of destruction. Many times, the gods and the angels had attempted to remake humanity and start over again, trying to weed out the flawed gene. One such example you already know about is with Noah and the flood. There have been other such events that have occurred throughout history. Once they deemed humanity a lost cause, they would wipe the slate clean and start over again anew.>>
Lucifer paused momentarily to allow Trinity to process what he had just said, before he continued on. <<Contradictory to your teachings, the devils and the demons, did not hate humanity yet. Rather at that time, they felt that if they could only purge their sins clean from their souls, and allow them to be reborn again, that over time it would help humanity to become more pure. Because they carry the power of destruction, through the assistance of their Hellfire they can efficiently remove the sins from a soul without damaging the soul itself. Then they would absorb it into their own body to digest. Similar to how your body processes food and breaks it down, their bodies were capable of breaking down humanities sins.>>
Trinity gasped at this information, but certain keywords stood out at her. Yet? At that time? Did that mean that they grew to hate humanity later? She had always learned that people who did evil in their life were later burned in hell for their sins. But to hear now that there was more to that story, and that those sins were burned from the soul in order to purify the soul, she did not expect this!
<<However, although they were capable of breaking down the sins of humanity, it came at a hefty cost for them, that they did not foresee happening. When the side effects first appeared, due to them digesting and destroying so many sins, none of them were prepared for it.>>
Lucifer's face changed to reflect a very grim expression as he began to think about his brother. <<Their bodies became deformed. Their skin hardened into scales to be able to properly contain what they were forcing their bodies to digest. Their teeth and their nails became sharpened into fangs and claws. Their wings also became distorted, and they ended up growing a tail in order to counter the different weight distribution of their demonic wings versus their feathered wings.>>
