Chapter 2: NOT ALONE

ONE YEAR LATER

My eyes flutter open when I hear my baby's happy shrieking. I sleepily look over to my tiny baby girl who is sprawled on her back, her tiny feet kicking the air and drool spitting from the side of her mouth as she happily chews on her tiny fist. I smile when my eyes flit over to the huge barricade of pillows surrounding my tiny angle's body — clearly my friend's doing. I move closer to Jane and wipe the drool off her face and Jane screeches delighted. At that exact moment my friend Chris enters the room talking to someone and judging by the smile on her face absolutely happy.

"Oh, thank you very much! I'll inform her right away!" She replies happily to something the person must have said.

She notices me watching and gives me a thumbs up. Who is she talking to?

"Yeah, Bye!" She quickly cuts the call and takes my hand and pulls me up.

"Do you know who he was? He—" She starts her rant but I cut her off.

"No I don't."

"Stop interrupting." She glares at me. "He was Cole Jameson. He texted you and asked for a date. A date! Well being the most caring best friend I replied being you. But then I freaked out as he called the next moment. So I told him that you are changing Jane's diaper and you told me to tell him you will love to go out with him tonight! She exclaimed and I sat there flabbergasted. I mentally patted my back. I really have a great taste in friends. I do not.

"You did WHAT?" I asked her. If I murdered her in her sleep would I be charged for murder? Probably not. The city will thank me for saving it from her craziness.

She swatted my arm. "Now don't be a loser. He is totally hot with H-O-T! This is the perfect opportunity for you. How long are you going to sulk over that arrogant husband of yours? You kicked him to the curb so now let it go. Cole is a great person and he is totally head over heels for you. Girl, I will lend you one of my sexiest dresses and you just gotta walk in there, bang him if he treats you nice and then you return home. You need to get laid. See, easy peasy." She said casually as if talking about the weather and not my sex life.

Chris was always going to be like this. She was carefree, wild and funny. The total opposite of me and that must be why we had became best friends in such a short time. I still remembered how we had first met. The memory was still clear as day.

I was sitting in a small Cafe near my apartment, reading 'Five feet apart' when someone sat in front of me. She was a pretty brunette with piercing black eyes and when I smiled at her she had glared at me and I was confused. I didn't even know her! And when she started accusing me of killing her puppy and breaking her brother's fragile heart the conversation got interesting.

Past

"What do you think of yourself Blondie? You think you had any right to break my brother's heart? You know what? My brother doesn't need you! He has hundreds of girls dying to have a chance to be with him, you should consider yourself lucky that he gave you a chance—"

Who the hell is this crazy woman? When did I break her brother's heart?

"Excuse me, I think you are talking to the wrong person. I don't even know who your brother is." I cut off her rant.

Her eyes blaze fiercely." I knew it! I knew you will act as if you don't know him! Next you will say that you don't know me! And that you didn't kill my brooks! Liar! You should burn in hell! I swear I would make a voodoo doll for you and then stick pins into it! " She screams and now the whole Cafe is staring. Maybe at the crazy woman or maybe at me— the poor confused victim of the crazy woman's wrath.

"I don't know who your brother is!" The words spill out of my mouth and I realized too late what I said.

The woman laughed manically. " See, you are who I thought you were! Spoiled brat!—" What is wrong with her? Did she fell on her way to the shop and hit her head?

"Sorry but I—"

Suddenly a man comes out of nowhere and covers the crazy woman's mouth with his hand. He looked too similar to her. The same brown hair, the same black eyes, the same cheekbones. Maybe he is her twin. I thank the heavens that he came before she could threaten me again with a voodoo doll and pins.

"She is not her! Stop acting like a crazy woman!" He whispers harshly to her but I hear him plainly over the silence in the coffee shop.

The woman looks at me with widened eyes that nearly swallow half of her face— she really looks at me from my forehead to my chin as if I am a species from another planet and she has been given the job to study me. The man removes his hand and I nearly close my ears with both of my hands, afraid of another misdirected screaming session.

The woman then clears her throat, looking anywhere but me before the man sits with her in front of me. I fold my hands in front of my chest and they both blush with sheepish expressions on their faces. I look at them with a raised eyebrow and feel like a judge about to prosecute her clients.

When they say nothing and continue looking at each other with murderous expressions I clear my throat to dissipate the awkward air.

"So anyone going to tell me why I just got yelled at for no reason?" I ask.

"She did it!"

"He did it!" They both point at each other at the same time and start arguing.

"How am I responsible? You were the one who was moping around and told me that a blonde with blue eyes broke your heart!" The brunette screams.

"When I said a blonde with blue eyes I didn't mean any blonde with blue eyes!" The man screams back at her. What are they? Five?

"You even said she came to this Cafe regularly ! I was just being a caring sister!" She yells back. I repressed the urge to shout, "Me! Focus on me!"

"Yeah, who the hell threatens someone's ex with voodoo dolls? And what was it about the puppy? You don't even have one for God's sake!" He snaps.

WAIT! She doesn't have a puppy?

"You should be thankful for having a sister like me! Brute!"

"I would be thankful in your dreams! Tosser!"

"Jerk!" The crazy woman yells.

"Dork!"

"Wanker!"

"Nerd!"

"I AM NOT A NERD!" She screams.

My gaze bounces between them like a ping-pong ball as they continue arguing not bothering to look at me. I think they forgot I exist so I say in a loud voice.

"Will someone explain what's going on?"

They both opened their mouths at the same time probably to argue when I shushed them.

"One at a time. First, you Crazy woman." I pointed at the brunette.

"Crazy woman?" She asked with furrowed eyebrows.

"First you yelled at me like crazy. Second, I don't know your name." I answered.

"Oh, I am Chris and this is my twin Kane." She leaned forward and whispered to me. "He stole my ovum. Petty thief."

"Hey! I did not." Kane yells.

"You absolutely did!"

"Well he did not. You are fraternal twins that means you had separate ovum each." I interrupt before they engage in another screaming match.

"Were you in our mother's womb?" Chris asks and Kane face palms.

What?

"What?" I ask. Is she crazy?

"No you were not, I was. So I am right." She says firmly and I look at her brother who's blushing like a teenager. Poor Kane. I couldn't imagine what it was like for their mother.

"I can explain what happened." Kane says. " Well... I had a girlfriend I was in love with and she broke up with me for someone else. I was heartbroken and called Chris which was the biggest mistake in my life, and she flew here from LA to kick my ex's ass. She had never met Juliet and I had just told her that Juliet was blonde with blue eyes and loved this Cafe so when our crazy woman here tried to find Juliet and saw you, she thought you were my ex." He finishes.

It was already clear to me what had happened. But I thing I could appreciate about the twins was they loved each other. Chris flew all the way here from LA just to hurt the one who caused pain to her brother.

"I am really sorry Miss Blue." Chris apologizes and this time she sounded sincere.

" You are a good sister and Kane is really lucky to have a sister like you." I tell her and she smiles.

"And why did you call me Mrs. Blue?" I ask.

She flushes. "Well I don't know your name and you have really pretty eyes. They are blue. Like BLUE. And I love blue."

"You have beautiful eyes too." I say because she really had beautiful eyes.

She perks up and hugs me while I laugh with Kane.

"We all are gonna be best friends." She laughs.

Present

I laugh when I watch Chris's eyebrows climb her forehead when she sees little Jane crawl over the pillows. I get up and pick Jane before she could climb all the way to the corner and fall. My little girl gives me a toothless grin and clutches my necklace in her hand before trying to tug it.

"Daa daa da" She babbles still playing with the necklace while I pour milk in her bottle by my free hand. Jane had always been a happy baby. She was demanding but slept soundly at night and didn't wake up until mornings.

Chris comes behind me and I turn.

"You are going right?" Chris asks seriously.

"You know I can't." The thought of being with someone else even if it was just a date physically pained me. It felt like a betrayal to him, I felt like I was cheating on him even if we weren't together anymore. His thoughts still left me awake at night. What was he doing? Did he eat anything? Is he alright? Funny, since I should stop caring about him. But I still loved him. Nothing could change that. Not even him. He was and will always be the love of my life. My husband— ex-husband.

"How long are you going to wait for him? He is never coming back! He left you then why are you the one who is suffering? You did nothing wrong but he trusted everyone else before you! Just why can't you move on?" Chris says her eyes full of tears. My own eyes fill too.

"Chris I love him. And I know what he did was wrong. But I have forgiven him. Just how long am I going to hold onto the anger and hate, it would destroy me too. And I am trying to forget about him but it isn't just possible when I have a part of him with me every moment I live. One day when my daughter asks where her father is I would have to face him. And I fear that day. I dream about it every time I sleep." I say my voice raspy before I carefully place Jane into her crib.

I turn around and Chris hugs me to her tightly. She sobs and I try to keep my tears at bay.

"You are still going to that date." Chris whispers in my ear and I nod, not wanting to upset her even more. It's just one date. One date I can do.

And as Chris pampers me, making me her own doll to play makeup with and my angel sleeps peacefully in her crib, a thought crosses my mind.

I am not alone.
