Chapter 9: Chapter 9: The Furious Neighbors

...

"Alright, Robert, it is indeed physical labor. Take a break," said William.

In this era, everyone is reluctant to move, simply because they are too hungry to have the energy.

Just now, Robert got tired after knocking a few times. In peaceful times, he would have been mocked for being weak, but now, it's normal.

If there had been a response from the door, Robert would have continued knocking, but after much effort, there was no response, leaving him disheartened.

Continuing like this, he would become very weak, and even if he managed to open the door, what if his neighbors saw his weakness and decided to 'bully' him?

So he suggested taking a rest.

Everyone else was cold and wanted to go home to warm up.

In their bedrooms, a few people huddled together, occasionally warming up by the fire, and still felt extremely cold, let alone in a corridor like this.

"Let Robert rest for now," said Mr. Jones at this time. "Although I don't know where this kid found such a door, it seems it doesn't block sound. We have so many people here, why should we be afraid of him?"

"What does Mr. Jones mean?" William seemed to understand what he was suggesting.

Mr. Jones sneered: "He wants to sleep, right? We'll take turns knocking on the door with something noisy, and if someone gets tired, they can rest and another person will take over. I want to make sure he can't sleep!"

"Great idea!"

"Mr. Jones is smart."

"How else could he become a boss?"

Even in an apocalyptic world, people still try to please those who used to be wealthy and influential. And Mr. Jones did have some tactics. In the past, it was his strategies that helped most people in the corridor survive.

His current plan was also very cruel, making someone unable to sleep is a terrible thing.

And it's not just about preventing David from sleeping.

"Also, if anyone needs to use the toilet, do it right here! He's tempting us with food, right? Then we'll use this to disgust him!" said Mr. Jones. "Don't be shy, everyone. At this point, forcing him to give up the food is what's most important!"

The others looked uncomfortable.

First, because of the inertia formed by the past civilized world, they felt this was somewhat shameful, and second, they didn't have much to excrete.

People who have dieted know that during dieting, it's rare to defecate.

"Let's do this," someone said. "Let's arrange the order for knocking on the door."

David frowned as he listened to the conversation outside.

These people really had no limits, coming up with such a plan.

But they didn't know that the soundproofing of his room was actually very good.

He could clearly hear their conversation and talk to them from his room because of the floating surveillance.

The floating surveillance was attached to his door, invisible to the naked eye.

His voice would go out as if through the door.

Normal sounds couldn't come in unless he intentionally listened.

Or say, when Robert was hammering the door, that kind of noise couldn't be blocked, but it was clear they couldn't keep hammering the door.

However, if they used excrement to splash the door, the smell would indeed come in.

Of course, it wouldn't be too much.

Because in this weather, those things would quickly freeze, but it was indeed a disgusting thing.

David went into the innermost room of his house. The door of this room was also removed, but it didn't matter. He would eventually get a replacement through continuous sign-ins.

He didn't want to bother with those outside anymore, took out his mobile phone, charged it with a power bank, and prepared to play a little game.

He could faintly hear the very slight noise from outside the door, but it didn't affect him much, not even as loud as the sound of his mobile game.

After playing for a while, he felt sleepy. He hadn't slept much before. Wearing a thermal vest and covered with a large cotton coat, he lay down on the floor.

This cotton coat was very comfortable, the only usable thing he had left.

Those beasts had taken all his clothes, even the one he was wearing.

At that time, he was almost frozen to death, but someone brought him a cotton coat.

Without it, he might not have survived until the sign-in system arrived.

Although he didn't know who that person was, he was indeed grateful, but...

He should not easily trust others.

Who knows if the person who gave him the clothes was one of the previous robbers trying to assuage their guilt?

Taking away all his clothes and then returning one to make him feel grateful? That would be foolish.

Of course, it could also be another kind-hearted person, but David thought such people were rare in this building now.

He had already restrained himself a lot. If he hadn't seen his neighbor's little girl starving, he wouldn't have opened the door.

If there really was such a kind person who brought him clothes, they probably wouldn't have survived until now.

David sighed and then leaned against the corner and fell asleep.

It had been a long time since he felt such warmth.

Of course, this 'warmth'...Couldn't compare to the world before.

Even with upgraded walls and windows for thermal insulation, and even with a thermal vest, David still felt a bit cold.

But it was much better than before.

Slowly, he fell into a deep sleep.

This time, although there was no bed, it was the most comfortable sleep he had had.

Because he had confirmed that those people couldn't break the door, so what was there to fear?

Finally relaxing, he slept like a baby.

The sound from outside the door could come in, but thinking about their frantic knocking, David even felt a sense of pleasure.

The louder and more urgent their knocking, the deeper the smile on David's face. In his ears, their pounding on the door sounded like Beethoven's sonatas.

When he woke up, he found it was already past seven o'clock.

Seven in the evening...

Had he slept that long?

David was surprised. If he wasn't mistaken, it was definitely not seven in the morning, but in the evening!

He had slept for more than ten hours?
