Chapter 3: Sucking Vitality

Ying didn't answer immediately as his thoughts quickly turned.

Spirit Hall.

They were the big bad of the first novel, so Ying knew a lot about them.

But most things he knew were subjective from the view of Tang San. After living here for six years with a deacon of Spirit Hall, Ying also knew that not everything that could be read was necessarily true.

For the common folks of this continent, Spirit Hall was a blessing. Not only did they help awaken the spirit of everyone free of cost, but they also provided basic subsidiary support for anyone within their ranks. The welfare was quite good.

Did that mean that Tang San was wrong?

This matter depended on perspective as well. After all, what Tang San had against Spirit Hall was a personal feud involving hunting down his mother, so Tang San felt that he was in the right.

Ying didn't want to be bound by the views from the books. After all, even if Spirit Hall were the big bad, as long as they were of benefit to him, he didn't care much about it.

With that, Ying smiled, "Of course, Grandpa. I would love to join Spirit Hall. But would they choose someone like me with only an innate spirit power of one?"

Ying spoke the last part with a hint of sadness. Naturally, this was to see how much authority or connection his grandpa still had left in Spirit Hall.

Ming, who received the response, just waved. "Of course, they would, Xiao Ying. Although your innate spirit power is quite low, there is still hope of becoming a soul master. After joining, you will also get an extra salary, with the soul master subsidy."

Ming said all this with good intentions, and Ying could understand it.

The welfare was indeed quite good.

"Since Grandpa has said so, I will naturally follow it. But I need to go to school first. After all, one needs to become a soul master to join Spirit Hall."

Hearing Ying's words, Ming smiled happily.

"Grandpa will naturally make arrangements for you to go to school. So, don't worry." Ming patted his chest, his old eyes seemed to shine so bright at this moment.

"Since the village only has you in this year with innate spirit power, the quota would naturally fall onto you. Also, Grandpa still has some savings over the years, and with the small job that the academy will give you, there would not be much problem for you to live quietly."

Ying listened to it, feeling the care of the man before him.

Ever since experiencing 'that', Ying has never been able to connect with others truly. After all, he was already a grown man who was thrust into this strange world, so it was hard for him to build emotional connections.

But that didn't mean that he would foolishly disregard others' feelings. Since the old man wants a good grandson, Ying would naturally comply and act accordingly. That was the least he could do without encroaching upon his own interests.

"Thank you, Grandpa, for all your care." Ying naturally thanked this old man who seemed to be worn out by everything.

Ming smiled hearing those words and handed something to Ying, "That's what I should do. For now, practice with this basic meditation manual, Xiao Ying. You already possess the lowest innate spirit power, so you can only work hard to make up for it."

Ying took the meditation manual carefully and nodded seriously.

The old man was not wrong; since his talent was already so weak, Ying would naturally use everything to make up for it. Hard work was just one aspect of it.

Besides, his martial spirit didn't seem to be that normal.

Ying's eyes darkened with thoughts.

...

Inside a plain and simple room, a boy was seemingly concentrating on something.

This boy was naturally Ying.

[Blue Silver Grass]

With a command, Ying called out to his martial spirit. A small and weak-looking red grass appeared above his palm. It seemed quite ominous.

And with that came the urge to kill and devour.

This time, Ying didn't suppress it but carefully experienced this feeling.

With years of meditation practice, Ying naturally developed a calm mind. The urge to devour also gradually blended into the serene mind. The dark feeling seemed to try to taint the calmness within, but eventually, it assimilated with calmness, and the urge also finally calmed down.

"This urge is in a controllable range." Ying's eyes shined.

Ying was aware that just bottling this urge was not good at all. While he was not a psychology major, he still periodically read some books or watched some videos related to it.

He knew that just suppressing the urge would naturally breed it, and the urge would gradually accumulate after a long period of time. This urge would naturally erupt after being bottled for so long, and the consequences it would bring would not be small at all.

Ying didn't want to have such a time bomb inside him, so he faced these urges head-on and was able to assimilate this urge.

After all, his martial spirit was still so weak that the impact it had on Ying's psyche would naturally be kind of weak as well.

"This experiment was successful at least." Ying sighed.

Besides controlling this urge, Ying also had another purpose. He wanted to gain deeper insight into this unique martial spirit of his.

And just as he expected, he also understood the nature of this blue silver grass.

Devour the vitality to enhance your own.

This was the route of the evil soul masters in the later books.

"My blue silver grass is really not serious." Thinking like this, Ying's lips couldn't help but twitch.

Being the recognized weakest martial spirit, it wanted to devour the flesh and blood of others. It did not fit the setting of a harmless grass at all.

Does that mean that Ying would not walk this path?

Of course not, for his dreams, he did not mind this path at all.

"Well, I guess my path has been decided." Ying's soulless eyes seemed to shine at this moment.

...
