Chapter 260: I don't deserve you

She could easily taste the potion mixed with the milk. But she drank it because she could tell that it was not potent enough to interfere with her sleep or really numb her mind.

"Oh I don't think the life of a healer is really for you." Miss Anhao replied, straitening up. "You're too virtuous to wait until after someone has been hurt." she added, before walking away. Aria let out a small smile as she settled in bed and closed her eyes, wondering what would tomorrow bring.

On the tree just outside Aria's window. . . .

"She didn't realize I was here. That's new." Joseph muttered to himself as he continued to look at the sleeping figure barely visible in the dim light of the recovery ward. After a few minutes, he sighed and settled back onto a branch and carefully took out a small glass globe from his pocket. The mini-meadow was still the same as it had been a week ago, on his birthday. Even though Aria had fought a battle almost to death and had been unconscious for almost the whole week, the meadow had not once fallen apart.

"I really don't deserve you Aria. I don't even deserve to love you." Joseph muttered, clutching the globe close to his heart and closing his eyes. As he did so, the events of that fateful night floated in his mind.

That night, Joseph himself didn't know what had taken over him. He had been so angry at Aria for letting Jacob and Helen sneak away that he had lost all rationality to think. Especially when everyone had begun to trade stories in the parlor so calmly, acting like nothing had happened. Joseph had cast one look at his mother's face and knew that he had failed. He had failed as everything he had sworn to be. Failed to protect Helen, failed to take care of his mother and failed to be the kind of man his father expected him to be.

He had wanted to do something, anything. Fly away, fight, or maybe just run from here and there. Just standing there and listening to people telling stories about the night warriors, Edmond Christo and Queen Amber was making him too restless and angry. But the thing that enraged him the most that night had been Aria.

She had looked so calm. Like she had everything figured out. Like she couldn't care one bit less what happened to everyone else as long as she found out what this was all about.

When Aria had said that everyone should search for clues, Joseph had known it to be a ruse. He knew that if she had already checked the mansion with wind bending, there would not have been any nook or corner left for others to check. She was just sending everyone on a wild goose chase for her own purposes. That had made him so angry that he had wanted to punch Aria, and he might have, had not she rushed away from the parlor.

Once everyone had gone and Joseph was left alone in the huge parlor, his rage had somehow melted away and he felt empty inside. He had thought about going to see Jacob, but he didn't think he could face the guy due to whom her sister was missing.
