Chapter 2: Another world, another bad life

>>Elayne (Sorin)

-A funeral,

This is the first thing I attend after coming to my senses after death.

Oh! Not my own though, not anyone attending mine either. I mean yeah I died, or I think I did. I’m sure I did… That is probably why I’m here…

It was a normal average day of my boring life and I found out I had failed a class in college. I was never a smart person, just an average- average twenty years old girl but still, I tried my best though, but at the same time, I also didn’t have the best of luck in life.

Right before my calculus exam I got a fever and I couldn’t study at all and because I’m not an intelligent one, I didn’t remember much from the lectures, I’m not smart either so I did try my best to jog my memory in the exam and was able to get something written but still ended up failing anyway.

Exams were over so I drank with the only two friends I had, cried myself out, cursed the professor and was on the way back to my apartment when I met with an unfortunate accident.

Like I said, I didn’t really have the best of luck in life.

Turns out I wasn’t the only one drunk, a truck driver was too. I actually don’t know that, but the way he was driving sure did indicate it and boom. He bashes into me at full speed and there I am, lying on the road in the middle of the night, bleeding out with so many regrets circling in my mind.

I hadn’t achieved much in life. Hell! I hadn’t achieved anything at all! I was a complete and utter disappointment to myself. I don’t know about my parents, they were neutral with everything, good folks really, but I knew they weren’t proud of me. I barely managed to get into a community college after all and I didn’t have a single achievement in life.

I’m not saying it was a bad life, it just wasn’t a good one either.

And when I thought that everything was finished, there would be no more of me or anything, I woke up again.

It was a drastic feeling, like I was drowning and trying to catch onto some straws to survive. I saw myself fade into darkness but I didn’t want everything to just end.

Something!

Anything!

I didn’t want to die!!

With a loud gasp I woke up, only to find myself in a big, weird, fancy room that had no lights and the curtains were drawn.

With heavy breaths, I looked around for anything familiar, but every single thing in that room was foreign to me. Every single thing.Even the person in the mirror.

I got up from the bed and walked to the full length mirror to look at the weird picture it was showing me.

It was hard to grasp at first, who was this man in the mirror? Why was he wearing old British royal type clothes? And why was he so pretty when he was a man? It took me a while to realize that the person in the mirror was none other than me.

What?

Well, it was a mirror, so it did make sense.

But at the same time, It didn’t make any sense? I’m a girl? I had shoulder length dark brown hair and eyes but this man, this man in the mirror had short blonde gray hair and green eyes?

Just what is happening? Did I switch souls with someone? There was no one else in the room but me and the person in the mirror was mimicking my every move so that meant it was me too but, how? I’m in a new body?

My heartbeat began to accelerate.

What is happening here?

It was a few seconds after that, that I realized that the body I was in may look like it belonged to a pretty boy but it was in fact a woman’s. The realization came to me when I noticed I was wearing a chest binder under my shirt and most certainly had a vagina between my legs.

What?

If I’m a girl, why am I dressed like a man?

That question was answered soon too, after an attendant came into the room.

There was a knock at the big door that immediately drew my attention, “Your highness Sorin, it’s me.”

Your highness? Sorin??? Those words rang a bell.

“Your highness?” The voice of a man called again, “Are you up?”

My mind was dizzy, the reality was coming to me. With my heart pounding like crazy, I gulped, “Come in,” I said softly with a shivering voice and the door opened to reveal a young man, about twenty years of age I guess. He had long dark brown hair, tied in a ponytail and wore an attendant's clothes. He walked over and went straight to the window to undraw the curtains.

“I hope you're ready for today,” He said, “It’s a sad day for the kingdom of Maxillian.” My heart dropped at the word.

Kingdom of Maximillian? I knew the place from somewhere and the realization was making me hurl.

I gulped as I felt hot and dizzy.

I looked at the guy who was opening the window to let the fresh air in. My heart was going crazy as I opened my mouth to confirm my suspicion.

If I’m prince Sorin Maximillian, from the Maximillian empire, a girl disguised as a boy, then this attendant has to be- “Leroy?” I called a name and the attendant looked back at me.

“Yes?” He answered, “Do you need something?” A lot of light was now coming into the room but by the second I was feeling sicker.

“You’re Leroy?” I asked.

He was confused, “Yes your highness,” He looked at me suspiciously, “I’m Leory.” I felt bad and felt weak in the knees so I sat down, “Your highness?” I was sweating and Leroy was about to make his way towards me, “You don’t look so good,” When he noticed something that caught his eyes

“...” I’m Sorin? I’m Sorin Maximillain. I’m no longer Elayne Heart but Sorin Maximillian?

So I’ve transmigrated into a novel I once read? What was the name of the book again? ‘True kings?’ Yes, I nodded to myself. That was the name of the web novel I once read.

‘True kings’

That was the only explanation that seemed plausible at the time.

Suddenly, I started feeling anxious.

Oh no! I’m Sorin Maximillian!!

What part of the story am I on?

“Your highness!!” Leroy saw a bottle next to my bed and ran to it, “This is poison!” He looked at the bottle and then at me, “Did you do something?” He seemed angry and I looked back at him in defeat, “You drank this, didn’t you!?”

“Oh…” I know what happened now. The original owner of this body, Sorin Maximillain, the crown prince of the Maximilian empire, killed herself and I took her place. I don’t know how that happened but it has somehow happened and I’m here now, as Sorin of the Maximillian empire.

Sorin was a female but was raised as a prince by her mother who wanted her to take the throne. Being the first born, Sorin was the crown prince of the empire but she- I paused, or should I saw he, was hated by pretty much everyone.

There were only two people in Sorin’s life who knew her secret. Her mother, who died when she was twelve and her attendant, Leory, who she grew up with.

“Your highness!!” Leroy came to me, he had a worried expression on his face, “We talked about this,” He whispered in an angry tone, “No matter how hard things get, you wouldn’t do something like this!” He was concerned, very concerned. It would break his heart if he found out the real Sorin is in fact dead, right?

I looked at Leroy in fear, “Sorry…” That was all I could mutter out.

I was sweating a lot now. Along with my anxiety and stress, I think the poison was still in my veins and was making me sick as well.

“It’s your father’s funeral today.” He placed his hand on my cheek and my heart skipped a beat. It’s the king’s funeral? Oh no…, “And you seem to be coming down with a fever. It must be because of the poison you tried drinking.” I gulped and licked my lips again, “I’ll draw you a cold bath, it’ll help.” He gave me a wry smile, “You have to be at the funeral. You’re going to be crowned king soon.” He gave me a nod, “Your brother, Leonidas is already a threat to us. We can’t lose here, Sorin.” He whispered the words to me.

But my throat just felt too dry and I couldn’t say anything in return.

I kept gulping but it just wouldn’t lubricate.

It’s the king’s funeral today… That means we’re at the part of the story where I have made an enemy of every single person in the palace and no one is by my side except Leroy.

The world spun, “Water,” I said softly and Leroy nodded. He walked up to the table and poured some water in the glass, then brought it to me.

I took the glass and gulped it down like a thirsty ape.

“Sorin…” Leroy got the glass back from me, “You look bad,” He said softly, “I’ll call the royal magician too, have him calm down your symptoms.” He sighed, “luckily the poison wasn’t strong enough to kill…” He looked at me with so much pain in his eyes, “Don’t do this again.” It looked like he was going to cry, “Please,”

A sharp pang of pain went through my chest at his words.

Oh Leroy…

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to tell him the truth now.

I only nodded back at him and he helped me to the bed again where I sat down nervously while Leroy made his way to the door.

He stopped just before exiting and looked back at me, “Your highness,” He called and I looked at him, “Everything’s going to be fine.” He gave me a smile but I couldn’t give him one back. I just couldn’t and he left.

It was because Leroy didn’t know what I did.

Sorin Maximilan was the villain of the story, a stupid and cruel yet at the same time a pitiable villain who dies a brutal death and Leonidas, her younger brother, was the main character.

He is the true king of the empire, destined to rise and take his people to victory while Sorin was-

I gulped-

Sorin is nothing more than a hated antagonist.
