Chapter 3: Blindly swinging at rabbits

As they approached the small forest clearing, Kane could immediately hear the breathing of multiple dog-sized animals.

"These things are bigger than I thought," he frowned.

"I thought you were blind?" Sun asked with a confused expression, only to be met with laughter.

"I am, I can hear where their breaths are coming from. So unless these rabbits are walking on two legs, I'm assuming they're pretty big."

Sun had a look of genuine surprise on her face, "You can hear that well? That's awesome!"

Kane began cracking his knuckles while walking into the clearing.

"The game's heightened my senses a little. Normally I'd only be able to hear things of this size shuffle around, maybe give a few extra loud breaths at best."

Sun smiled gleefully and pumped her fist into the air, "Maybe you can fight them after all!"

"Hey, what made you think I couldn't?" he smirked at her, the conversation ending very abruptly as something rapidly shuffling through the grass could be heard.

Suddenly rolling to the side, Kane narrowly avoided a surprise attack from one of the rabbits. Ignoring Sun's shocked gasp as he brought its status screen up.

Below was its name, level, class, hp, and defense. There was also a short description.

----------------------------

[Killer Rabbit: Lvl 1 | Speed | 10/10 Hp | 1 Def]

-Large, yet quiet and quick, Killer Rabbits present a formidable challenge to unprepared beginners.

---------------------------

Things like damage weren't included in these stat panels, and anything magic-related would also be left out if the beast couldn't use it.

Special analysis skills would be needed to view this information, otherwise, you would have to experience its damage and so-on first hand and keep it to memory.

Finishing his roll, Kane pivoted on his foot, kicking out right into the ass of the charging rabbit. It took 1 point of damage.

'Well this is gonna take a while,' Kane thought glumly.

Trying his best to avoid the rabbit's rapid advancements, he'd throw out a punch or a kick whenever he heard the rabbit drop its guard to dash at him. Sun would yell out whenever he was about to walk into something or trip.

Though he could sense most of these himself, doing so while in battle made it hard to focus, so he appreciated having Sun do some of it for him.

As if to contradict his confidence in not running into any obstacles, he slipped on a small rock almost immediately after thinking this.

Kane fell backward and quickly tried rolling up to his feet, taking the brunt of the Rabbits charge just as he got up.

Although it didn't hurt, he could still feel the force as he staggered back, almost falling again.

For the visually impaired, there was a handy feature in which players could choose to only check a specific part of their stats, as to not overload them with information. In this case, health.

[Kane: 85/100 Hp]

While staggering back from the impact, a flip switched in Kane's head. Very few people knew this about Kane, but he's a battle maniac!

The moment his blood starts rushing in combat, his very personality seems to change. Although a lot of it is a persona, it's still one he relished putting on in moments like these.

Kane began laughing maniacally, grabbing the rabbit's head at the point of impact.

He gave an insane laugh and loudly threatened the rabbit, "Let's see how you like it you fluffy white bastard! I'll tear you to pieces and destroy your entire family!"

"Um, the rabbits are brown, Kane." Sun piped in.

Ignoring her distant shout, he put all of his strength into lifting the rabbit onto its hind legs, and slammed his head into its stomach, going 1 damage yet again.

The rabbit was now at half health, but Kane wasn't done, forcing it to stay on its hind legs with all his strength, he began kneeing it repeatedly. 4 health, 3 health, 2 health, 1 health...

Finally, the rabbit collapsed and faded into soft blue light, releasing some small orange and yellow orbs that were quickly absorbed into his body.

Kane focused only on what would be changed by the victory, as the concept of his stats rushed into his head.

[Kane: Lvl 0 | 85/100 Hp | 5/50 Xp | 5 G]

As he sat down in the grass by the rapidly vanishing rabbit, Sun walked up to him.

"Nine to go." Sun said cheerfully, she seemed pretty surprised that Kane knew how to fight.

"Where'd you learn all that? The rolling and the kicks and stuff, you were a total badass!"

Kane shook his head thoughtfully, "It's nothin', my dad made me take Aikido when I was a kid, he only let me practice the stuff on falling and dodging though, the actual fighting stuff is because I used to be an ass in middle school."

The excitement on Sun's face seemed to falter after that last part.

"Wellllll, in any case, [Heal]." A soft green light surrounded Kane's avatar as he felt his health return to normal.

"I can only heal 20 points at a time, so don't get hit too often." Kane nodded seriously in reply before hopping to his feet.

"I made a promise to that rabbit, time to fulfill it." He said with a gleeful look on his face as he once again marched towards the other rabbits.

"Oh yeah, your sick sociopathic promise, how could I forget."

About 15 minutes of fighting passed before Kane had the idea of breaking a stick off a tree and using it as a weapon instead, he was surprised to find it did an extra point of damage.

Another 5 minutes of relentless fighting passed as Kane watched the [Rabbit Pelt] drops piling up on the ground. Shortly after, Kane finally completed his quest and leveled up. Unlocking his first two Aporter skills.

---------------------------------------------------------

[Kane: Aporter | level-1 | Gold-50 | Platinum-0]

[Hp-100/110, Mp-20/30, Xp-0/54] [Skill points: 1]

[Skills:

Begginer-

Aport-1: Allows the user to teleport small objects within a 50-foot radius to their hand, consumes 5 mana per use. {Reach Rank 'Common' to level up skill}

Self Aport-1: Allows the user to teleport. 1 mana is consumed per foot of teleportation. {Reach Rank 'Common' to level up skill} ]

---------------------------------------------------------

He immediately decided to spend the skill point on damage, watching the figure rise from 0 to 5, next time he came back here he'd be two-shotting the rabbits with his fist.

Or if he can find the time, maybe his head.

"Nice, mind telling me what your skills do?" She bent over and looked at the once again seated blind lunatic.

"Watch and learn kid." Kane said as smugly as possible, reaching his hand out and focusing on her staff.

He felt a warm sensation rush to his hand as a message popped up in his head. [Aport-1 cannot take equipped items].

"Goddamnit." He hung his head as Sun cockily asked what she was supposed to be learning.

Kane 'looked' around, his senses had increased even further from unlocking the use of mana and gaining a level, he could detect a small tree nearby and walked most of the distance to it.

Then in the blink of an eye, he teleported right up to the tree, snapped a branch off, and threw it at Sun's face.

"Oh wow! That's awes- ow, hey!!" She flinched and put her arm up as the silly blind man threw a stick at her face.

"Oops, my bad. I meant to activate my skill right before it hit you, but y'know... blind."

As he spoke, the stick vanished from the ground and appeared in his hand. Only a millisecond was needed to Aport it, with not a single light to indicate the use of magic, it was clean instantaneous teleportation.

"Apology not accepted," She frowned.

Kane used the last of his mana to teleport over to her, "Here, I'll give you a piggyback ride into town."

She had a look of genuine confusion on her face, "But you're blind?! Actually, on second thought you'd probably be fine. It's still a no though, I'm not a child."

"You aren't??" Kane easily managed to outdo her previous look of confusion.

Sun puffed out her cheeks and pouted, "I'm 14."

"Sun, adults are childish enough already, so you really don't bode well here."

She lightly punched his shoulder and turned towards the town, walking about 20 feet before she turned around. "Aren't you coming?"

"No, you're too young for me to be doing that."

An icy cold stare returned to her face as she walked away, this time he could feel it even through his blindness.

"Wait, aren't you going to friend me or something? Was our adventure together for naught?" Kane put on his best pleading eyes, the only problem is he'd never used eyes before.

The result was a weird stare.

"No." She walked away unamused.

Kane quickly dropped the face, "C'mon, please? You can't leave a helpless blind lunatic like me around, who knows who I might kill!"

She stopped and turned around, "You realize I'd probably get included in that 'might kill' list too, right?" You really suck at this."

She let out a sigh and opened up her settings.

Kane received a notification, [Friend Request from, Ultimate Sun Goddess].

He immediately regretted asking her to friend him as he read the stupid name, reluctantly accepting the request.

"I'm gonna go over to the city of Lanport to grind for some gear, see you around Kane."

He gave a massive bright grin and began waving goodbye exaggeratedly, "Thanks for helping me commit genocide today, it was really fun! See ya late-."

He stopped as she left the game mid-sentence.

'Definitely a girl,' he nodded to himself with a sage expression on his face.

He made his way back towards the town, stopping by the quest board to collect the gold from the rabbit hunt. A nice 50 gold was added to his stats, making the number reach triple digits.

Finding an identical quest, he immediately accepted it and began walking back down towards the Terrestrial Glades to begin farming.

He had to reign in the dumb jokes and fake-psychopathic persona he oh-so enjoyed when out in the real world. But in Ember, he could be as cruel, vile, unfunny, and confusing as he wanted.

It was great! And he's only just getting started.
