Chapter 14: Dictatum
Everyone's eyes were focused on Mattias and Tsuyoshi. There were at most 40 people out there; man and woman, young and old. that were shooting glances at them. They were judging them with their eyes, which was understandable. Two strangers came with their leader with the intention of joining them. There was a small awkward silence where everyone just looked at each other. The leader stepped in at this point.
"I know you may not like this but I saw what they can do. These kids can be quite useful."
"Well… If you say they are… Then they must, leader."
"Yeah, I think so too!"
"Thank you everyone. Well then! We have a lot to do."
Everyone agreed to his decision quite easily. Mattias was surprised to this. Not everyone would be able make that many people agree to what you think and say that easily. Normally no one could. Who was this man to be able to lead these people?
As Mattias was thinking these kinds of things, the leader came to them and smiled.
"Congratulations, you are one of us."
"Why? Why do you want us to be a part of this community?" (Mattias)
"Well… Let's just say that I have my reasons, I guess. You don't have to know that right now. Now! You must be tired. Why don't you guys get some rest. While you guys are accommodating yourselves try to get to know people. This is a friendly community. Haruko, Tsuna, can you guys help them about the rules we have here?"
"Sure thing." (Haruko)
"Whatever you say boss." (Tsuna)
"Thank you. I will see you two later then."
After bidding them goodbye, the leader left towards a two-story building where there were people with guns around keeping watch. Mattias looked around and saw that every single human in the community was looking at them while they were passing by. The children were hiding behind their parents or whatever they could find while the adults were wary of them.
"Now that's a threatening look." (Mattias)
"Try anything and you'll regret it." (Tsuna)
"If I wanted to try anything, I had every chance to do so while we were still on the road. Don't take me as an idiot. Now, won't you do what you are told?"
"You!"
"Enough." (Haruko)
Haruko held Tsuna by his arms to stop him from attacking Mattias. After she handled him, she turned around and looked at Mattias with cold eyes.
"Looks like you want trouble. I suggest you to shut up and behave. You are here now, whether you like it or not."
"Well we will be living here for the foreseeable future it seems so getting along is not such a bad idea. But I have to tell that I'm like a mirror, I reflect how I'm acted towards." (Mattias)
"Yeah tell him to calm down." (Tsuyoshi)
Tsuna looked at the smiling Tsuyoshi and he got angrier. But he still held himself back because if he attacked those two then, then the leader would yell at him as he was the one who brought them. He took a deep breath and calmed himself down.
"There you go. Now, we'll handle the car so take your stuff and follow us." (Haruko)
Mattias and Tsuyoshi got their stuff from the car and its trunk. They didn't have much as they couldn't loot in downtown and they brought just some necessary things like spare weapons, balms and bandages for emergencies. They took them and walked behind Haruko and Tsuna.
They walked towards a back corner of this 'city' where there wasn't really anything. There was a house that was obvious it was looted and left alone. The door was open wide and only some of the windows were intact.
"This'll be where you will live. We don't have any empty places and we don't really care as well." (Tsuna)
"Well you technically abducted us so who are to complain." (Mattias)
"Aren't you smart?"
"Go put your stuff in, we will take a tour around the place for you to learn." (Haruko)
"Will these be okay though? I mean all those people were looking at us with bad eyes." (Tsuyoshi)
"Are you calling these people thieves? I can shoot you for that y'know." (Tsuna)
"He's got a point though. Look at the house, it is practically an open box." (Mattias)
"You will be fine. We may not trust you but we are no thieves Just keep them if you have a problem." (Haruko)
Mattias locked gazes with Tsuyoshi and both of them went in and left their stuff inside. After they got out, Haruko and Tsuna started walking again. They started going around the place, showing everything the duo had to know.
"That place is where we have our meals. Everyone eats together to prevent hoarding and making the community a huge family." (Haruko)
"That's nice! Everyone is good friends with everyone then, right?" (Tsuyoshi)
"You could say that."
Haruko then pointed towards a wooden shed that had wire circling around it for safety purposes.
"That is our armory. We keep every kind of weapon there." (Haruko)
"I am not leaving my katana."
"And me my kodachis."
"You don't have much choice in the matter." (Tsuna)
"Well I think I do." (Tsuyoshi)
"Oh you do? Do you believe I won't take'em?"
"Do you believe you can?"
Tsuyoshi and Tsuna started walking towards each other, while not trying to hide their anger at each other.
"Enough. Tsuyoshi calm down."
"Stand your ground Tsuna!"
""Hmph!""
They both stopped before they became violent. Mattias and Haruko looked at each other and smiled ever so slightly, it seemed like they understood each other. After that they went on with the tour for the rest of the afternoon.
"That concludes the tour I guess. Other than that are the rules. Rule #1-" (Haruko)
"Don't be an asshole and do what you're told." (Tsuna)
Tsuna cut Haruko off and talked while glaring at Tsuyoshi. They had their fair share of arguments throughout the tour and were now practically hating each other. After speaking though he stopped and gulped. When he turned around, Haruko was glaring at him with cold eyes.
"What did I tell you about cutting me off, Tsuna?"
"Shit, I forgot. Sorry!"
After a punch, Tsuna finally calmed down. Tsuyoshi and Mattias were not expecting Haruko to be so violent so they gulped also. After being done with Tsuna, Haruko returned and continued.
"Although he spoke when he wasn't supposed to, he is right. First rule is that be a part of the community and do what you are supposed to. That usually being what you are told you, especially in your case. We are a big community and we have to move as one.
Second rule is do not cause discord. If you are the source of a problem, depending on how bad it is, you will be punished.
Third rule, don't keep anything. Like the first rule, we are one. Be it knowledge, clothing even supplies. If you have extra then share. You need us to survive as we need you to survive as well.
Final rule as of yet, don't be a dick.
These are the rules as of now. We expect you to follow these." (Haruko)
"Simple but effective. I like it." (Mattias)
"Efficiency is key after all. You will be given a job tonight." (Haruko)
"Job?" (Tsuyoshi)
"You saw on the tour right? We have simple farms, manufacturers and other essential professions in our community. You will be going from one of those places starting from tomorrow." (Tsuna)
"Well, I don't really have a problem with it but we are good fighters, not crafters." (Mattias)
"Especially me. I only know how to break stuff, not make stuff!" (Tsuyoshi)
"Well, the leader decides that. You will learn at the dinner. We will hold it at sundown so be there or you won't eat anything tonight." (Haruko)
"Sure." (Mattias)
Mattias shrugged his shoulders and turned around. He returned to the house along with Tsuyoshi. They were in front of their new 'house'. They had a couple of hours before they would have dinner so they were going to rest a little bit.
The house consisted of a living room with only a sofa in it, two rooms that had bed bases only and an American style kitchen. They sat on the sofa and started discussing what were they going to do.
"Hey bro, how long are we going to stay here?" (Tsuyoshi)
"I have no idea." (Mattias)
"What about our safe place?"
"Sshhh. They might be listening. I still don't trust them."
"Me neither. And sorry."
"It's okay. As long as we don't give out important things then we can survive for a while."
"Do you think they will do anything to us?"
"Well, from what I know of novels and TV shows, they might be cannibal psychopaths but they also might not be. That man they call leader has something off about him."
"You felt it too?"
"Yes. It was different from the monster but it was essentially the same thing as well. It is hard to describe it in words."
"Yeah. I don't know what to think of it as well."
"Well, we don't have anything we can do right now. So why don't we rest a little. That fight had me really tired."
"Yeah. We did a lot of things today."
"Too much in a day for me. I will probably nap a little so can you wake me up when its time?"
"Sure bro."
The time for dinner came quite quickly and Mattias and Tsuyoshi were led by Haruko to the dining area. There were a couple of tables set with people taking their share of the food from the chef and sitting at the tables.
Mattias and Tsuyoshi also entered the line for food and got their share. The leader also joined the line after some time. Everyone greeted him with smiling faces.
"No wonder he is loved by his people." (Tsuyoshi)
"He's trying to become an example for his people. I can respect that." (Mattias)
After everyone was seated and started their meal, leader stood up and gathered attention.
"Everyone! I'm sorry to intrude while you are eating but as you all know; we have two young guests here today. They are going to be joining us so everyone, please welcome them."
There were some claps and half-hearted welcomes sounded out. The leader laughed at this and continued speaking. This time, directly to the duo.
"I'm sure you learned how we operate here from Haruko and Tsuna. We do not welcome freeloaders so you will do your part as well."
"Where are you thinking leader? I need new men in the bullet line."
"I also need people in my tailor's workshop. After we've lost Junsuke, we can't keep up with the demands."
People started speaking out, telling how they needed new people in their own respective departments. Leader listened to them all. When everyone was finished, he lifted his hand and apologized.
"I have heard everyone of your requests. I'm sorry but these guys are not fit for those positions. I have a more fitting position."
He then looked at the duo and smiled.
"You two will be a part of the Hunting Party."
After leader finished speaking, there was a period of silence until one of the elderly people spoke.
"Those are just kids! Have you no mercy?"
"Well, uncle. I need a job done and I need a party as small as possible. Those two are perfect. You will be briefed in morning so I want to see you two in front of my house at dawn."
He then got up and left his plate to the food distribution desk.
"I have already finished so I'll retire early. Good night everyone."
He then left to his house. Leaving behind a group of people that are looking at the confused duo with pity.
