Chapter 2: chapter 2

The whole night, I couldn't stop thinking about the note. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Ethan's face—his eyes locking with mine, a silent promise lingering between us. But as the hours passed, doubt crept in. What if it was all in my head? What if he just needed to talk about something random, like a school project or some other nonsense?

But deep down, I knew that wasn't it. I could feel it. Something was happening, something I couldn't explain.

After what felt like an eternity, the final bell rings the next day, signaling the end of school. I rush to my locker, my heart pounding. I can't believe I'm actually going to meet him after school. What if I mess it up? What if he doesn't feel the same way?

I try to calm my nerves but fail miserably. I glance at my phone and see a message from Sarah: "So, what's the deal with the note? You gonna see him?"

I text her back quickly: "Yes, but I have no idea what it's about. I'm freaking out."

Before I can put my phone away, I hear footsteps behind me.

"Hey," Ethan says, his voice barely above a whisper.

I turn around, my heart leaping in my chest. He's standing there, a little out of breath, as if he's been running to catch up with me. There's a look in his eyes—something intense, almost raw—that makes my stomach flutter.

"Hey," I reply, trying to sound calm, though I'm anything but.

"I… I'm glad you got the note," he says, his voice shaky. "I've been wanting to talk to you about something for a while now. But it's complicated."

I raise an eyebrow, my curiosity piqued. "Complicated?"

He nods, his gaze drifting to the ground for a second before meeting my eyes again. "Yeah. Look, I don't know how to say this, but... I've been thinking about us—about you—and it's been eating at me. I'm with Charlotte, but... things are different now. I don't know what's going on between us, but I can't ignore it anymore."

My heart races, and my mind goes blank. Did he just say that? Was that an admission? I swallow hard, trying to make sense of his words. "You mean, you want to break up with her?"

He hesitates for a moment, his eyes full of uncertainty. "I don't know. But I can't stop thinking about you, and I feel like I owe it to both of us to figure this out. But…" He trails off, a nervous smile forming on his lips. "It's scary. I don't know what's going to happen."

My heart leaps into my throat. This is it. He's actually saying what I've been waiting for. But before I can say anything, his phone rings, breaking the moment.

He glances at it and then looks back at me, his face suddenly tense. "It's her… Charlotte."

I nod, trying to hide the sting of jealousy that surges in my chest.

"I have to take this," he says reluctantly. "I'll call you later, okay?"

I nod, forcing a smile, though my heart feels heavy. "Sure."

Ethan walks away to answer the call, his voice muffled by the sound of the crowd around us. I stand there, a whirlwind of emotions swirling inside me. On the one hand, I feel like I've just stepped into the world I've always dreamed of—a chance with Ethan, the boy I've had a crush on for so long. On the other hand, it feels like I'm standing on the edge of a cliff, unsure of whether I'm about to fall or soar.
