Chapter 2: New World, New parents
I don't know why but I reincarnate in a different world as an unborn baby.
"Do you have to go today too." the voice that asked this question in tension belongs to my mother.
Her name is Catherine and she is eight months pregnant with her first child.
"Yeah, recently monsters started to lurking around near the village and they might attack someone if we don't do anything." The heavy voice belonged to a man named David who seemed to be my father.
"But… why is it always you? What'll we do if something happens to you?" She said while touching her belly.
"Everyone has a family to protect and if their families stopped them from doing dangerous things then who will protect us?" David is right and I agree with him, he's a duty to protect this village that includes his family too.
But that does not mean that I don't agree with Catherine, she is your wife and soon she will become a mother too so her discomposure is also justifying. She wants her husband to spend more time with her.
"Also I am not patrolling alone Leon and Sam are also coming."
"…if you say so… please come back home safely that's all I want."
"Well, I am off," he said that and give her a goodbye kiss on the forehead before leaving.
"Take care honey and come back soon me and baby will be waiting for you. Bye-bye." She said this while waving her hand I can feel that she is lonely from inside.
It's been one week since I reincarnate as an unborn baby and I have come to know that this is not my old world. It's a fantasy-like world where monsters exist though I didn't hear I think in this world magic exists too.
What I mostly do is what every baby does, sleeping, I am an unborn baby and that's all a baby can do. Sleeping and hearing voices.
My new parents have been married for 2 years and now they are about to have a baby they are living a happy married life.
Catherine is eight months pregnant and expecting to give birth to her baby(me) by next month. I'm also excited to see this new world because this is not my old world is what I heard.
If I remember correctly then this village name was Quartiz and David was a village guard whose job was to protect this village from bandits, wild animals, and monsters.
Catherine was having a problem moving around because of her pregnancy, how could that man leave his pregnant wife. His wife needed him the most right now, I know his job is important but he can at least take leave for few days.
I was worried for Catherine, because if something happened to her then it could threaten my life too. I just wanted to be born safely in this new world as I got the second chance. Yawn, worrying about her made me tired, back to sleep."
It's already evening when I woke up because Catherine is making dinner. David's Swift is about to over and he would be coming home right now.
I could hear Catherine's voice she was humming in her sweat voice while preparing the dinner. Most of the people in this village are farmers and do farming for living but farming was very hard in this day and age there are many problems. There is an irrigation problem, sometimes insects eat most of the harvest.
Farming solely depends on rainfall. Good rainfall brings a good harvest, while drought brings hunger and poverty. Also, the feudal Lord appropriate the farmers' entire production and only give a small portion of the total production to the farmers for their livelihood.
A feudal lord (nobles) is a man that is appointed by the King and granted a piece of land to rule for him. In exchange for the land, the lords(nobles) give taxes which he collected from the fiefs to support the king with military power.
The feudal lords' knights would collect taxes in form of coins, agricultural produce, or any other goods from villages. If you are unable to pay the tax then you are disrespecting the lord and as a punishment, they will kill you or sell you as a slave.
king knows all of this but because of this feudalism, the power is decentralized. King is only the nominal head and if nobles want then they can overthrow the king.
Some Feudal lords are so much corrupted that they kill farmers and **** women just for fun. Our fief lord is not different from others, he is also a greedy and corrupt noble.
David is a village guard but he also does farming and animal hunting to pay taxes and to earn some extra money, Catherine also grows some vegetables in the backyard.
"I'm home dear!" David finally came home.
"Aah! Welcome home." Catherine replied with great joy.
"Dinner is ready, and I was just waiting for you, let's eat together"
Looks like David did not find any monsters today but that's not always happened. This village resides close to the cursed forest Azazel and monsters attack people frequently that is why people have to guard the village in shifts, David's shift is over and now it's some other people's shift.
The population of this village is nearly 260 if I remember correctly to what David said, that's because monsters attacks people and these numbers are consistently decreasing and the bad part is that we cannot go to a safer place because we have to pay other nobles tax and toll tax and after that finding a new place to settle down.
"So how is the situation, is it bad?" Catherine asked.
"The situation is not that bad but that's not the reason for me to abandoned my duty" David replied in a serious tone.
"Yeah, I know."
After that, both of them started eating their dinner quietly without saying a word.
David started to move his leg under the table, I can hear the sounds of laughter and giggles. They happily fished their dinner.
There is nothing to do in this small village so after dinner they are preparing their bed to sleep.
"Good night darling."
"Good night. "
"Cancel illumination" Catherine chanted something and it becomes dark.
I know that magic exists in this world but to use it this easily, can I also use magic? That is the question I have in my mind.
This world is somewhat a mixture of the medieval period and the fantasy world because monsters, magic, and nobles exist in this world.
