Chapter 13: You Like Her?

"Goldie! Wait up!"

Jasmine calls after Goldie.

Goldie can hear her calling from behind her.

'No. I can't… I can't stop!', she reasons, fleeing in a desperate panic through the crowded halls to make her escape.

How could she stop? How could she explain 'THAT' just now?... Screeching like a bird in front of everyone…

Her life was over!

___

Without much thought for where to go, Goldie dashes into the girls' bathroom, gunning to seek refuge in one of the toilet cubicles.

Jasmine comes in through the bathroom doors after her a short moment later.

"Goldie?... Goldie!", Jasmine calls.

All is silent before Goldie's voice responds in a dejected whimper from one of the toilet cubicles.

"Yeaaah…"

The girl was dying.

"Oh dear…", comments Jasmine, hurrying over to the door of the toilet cubicle she had heard the voice come from.

It was important to be at her dying friend's side at this dark time. More importantly, she wanted to know how on earth Goldie had managed to screech right in front of her crush and a good population of their school!

She could understand why her friend would be sounding so devastated. By now, everyone would be talking about it.

"Goldie, are you okay?", asks Jasmine, leaning up against the doorpost.

"... No…", responds Goldie's whimpering voice.

"What? Are you crying?...", asks Jasmine with growing concern.

It was bad that Goldie was drawn to tears. She didn't like to see her friend cry.

"Come on. Open up.", says Jasmine, knocking on the cubicle door in an attempt to get Goldie to let her in so she could comfort her.

"..."

Jasmine is visited in response with a whimpering, sniffing silence as

Goldie neither responds nor opens the door.

"Goldie?...", questions Jasmine with worry written all over her face.

"... My life is over!…"

Goldie wails in response, breaking down in tears as she reaches the high point of her devastation.

"Awww… no… Don't say that…", responds Jasmine, genuinely sorry for Goldie. She could imagine being in Goldie's shoes right now.

Screeching in front of your crush when you were supposed to be all cool and classy, elegant and beautiful… any high school girl would be devastated.

"No. Your life isn't over. It's- it's not. It's just…"

Jasmine responds with comforting, reassuring words, but the words don't work on Goldie who is convinced that she is ruined for good.

"It is!… You heard it too, didn't you?", responds Goldie in tears, referring to her bird call.

"Yeah, that…", says Jasmine in sullen contemplation.

Indeed, that bird call was damaging. How ever would she be able to seduce Ryan, and win his heart after that?

Such a shocking sound… Where did it come from?

How did Goldie even come about screeching like that in the first place?

She had to ask.

"What was that about just now? What happened?... I never heard you make that sound before.", questions Jasmine in genuine wonder.

She had seen Goldie do a number of weird things before, but that was by far the weirdest.

"I… I don't know… I panicked and… and that…', Goldie stammers in response.

"It just… it just came out of nowhere!"

Jasmine responds with an understanding silence, allowing Goldie to vent more, as she continues speaking.

"See, this is why I ran away in the first place. I just knew something dumb like this would happen… but this is even worse than I expected!

My life is over!

Waaa…", she wails.

"Awww, Goldie…", responds Jasmine, truly troubled, placing a comforting hand on the door.

Indeed, the bird call was surprising, but still… it wasn't the end of the world.

"Don't worry, we'll figure something out. Just… Come on out first."

Jasmine tries again to convince her friend, Goldie to come out so she could comfort her properly.

She wanted to give her a hug.

"No!", responds Goldie, adamant about not leaving.

"Everyone heard it, including Ryan… I can never show my face in public again!", she says, shocking Jasmine.

"What?!...", questions Jasmine.

"Don't be ridiculous. Do you plan to stay in there forever?"

"Yes!", Goldie responds, serious about staying in the bathroom cubicle forever.

"Oh, come on, Goldie. Just come on out first. We can figure this out together.

Besides, it was just the people in the front of the school that saw what happened…

I personally think you don't have much to worry about. Before you know it, everyone would have forgotten all about it.

Knowing this school, they would be on to the next best rumour once something new happens.", Jasmine reassures Goldie.

Click!

After a beat, the cubicle door makes a clicking sound as Goldie opens it a peep to look at Jasmine with questioning, teary eyes.

"Really?", she asks, full of worry, as she was beginning to find some sense in Jasmine's words.

Excited to see that Goldie had finally opened the door, Jasmine digs into her highly fashionable bag to find wipes for her friend's teary face.

"Really!", she responds with a nod as she hands Goldie some wipes to wipe her teary eyes and snivelling nose before she continues speaking.

"and Ryan?", asks Goldie in a cute, nasal tone, holding the wipes over her nose.

"Yes, and Ryan. Even though you screeched right in his face, I doubt he even cares. He would be the last person to listen to rumours about you. He hardly cares about school gossip.", responds Jasmine accurately.

"No, he'll just think I'm some sort of a weirdo…", says Goldie, downcast.

They say first impressions matter the most, and for her first face-to-face meeting with him, she screeched in his face.

'What other impression could he have of me?', reasons Goldie.

"No… he hardly cares what others think.", responds Jasmine, shaking her head in disagreement.

"And if thinks you're a weirdo, then he is not fit for you.", she adds, sweetly.

Indeed, if anyone dared call her friend weird, no matter who he was, he was not worthy of her.

Goldie was too precious to be thought of in that way. And Jasmine would do whatever it took to protect her.

Right now, crying like this, Goldie looked so pitiful. Her beautiful face had traces of tears around her eyes, and her pretty, wavy hair was a little out of place from all the running.

She did not deserve this.

"Hah…"

Jasmine sighs.

'Such an eventful morning…'

Her friend really was such a disaster.

She smiles at Goldie, pushing her loose strands of hair back.

"You're beautiful. Beautiful girls shouldn't cry."

The comment instantly makes Goldie break into a smile.

"There… that's better. You're even more beautiful now with that smile!", Jasmine instantly throws in a compliment, blown away by Goldie's beauty with the few remaining loose strands of hair decorating her face.

She was indeed such an unmatched beauty.

"Jasmine…", responds Goldie with an eye roll. Jasmine was saying ridiculous things again to make her laugh.

"How could I be beautiful with a teary face?...", responds Goldie with a little giggle.

Jasmine, telling her she was beautiful at such a time was so unexpected and hilarious.

"I'm serious! The tears are beautiful. But the smile is much prettier."

If only Ryan could see you now, he would fall head over heels for you!", responds Jasmine, obviously exaggerating.

"Hahaha!...", Goldie instantly bursts out laughing.

"You have the looks of a goddess, you know that?

I saw how he looked at you after saving you from those stairs and refused to let go until you screeched at him!

He probably was already falling in love before you ended it in birdcall!

Honestly, Goldie, what were you trying to say?"

"Haha… it was birdcall for 'Ryan, I love you'!", responds Goldie, playing along.

"Hahaha…", Jasmine laughs hard at the joke.

Hey, here's an idea… how about we tell Ryan that? Maybe write a note and shove it into his locker.

'Hi Ryan, it was birdcall for "I love you!"

"He would be so confused! Haha….", responds Goldie, laughing.

" Hahaha…", Jasmine laughs too.

"I'm serious though. Don't worry, it's going to be okay.", says Jasmine, reassuring her friend with a nod and a pat on her shoulder.

"Hmmm… You think so?", questions Goldie again with concern, but without any tears as Jasmine had managed to cheer her up.

"Oh, I know so.

And besides, that gives you an advantage… Nobody thinks beautiful girls are weirdos, no matter what they do! Haha!", she chuckles.

Just then, the school bell rings, indicating it was time for classes.

"Oh look, it's the bell!", announces Jasmine, looking up with urgency. They had nearly lost track of time.

"Come on, Goldie. We need to get to our assigned classes before all the best seats get taken away!", she announces, pulling Goldie along with her as she zips away from the bathroom and to the large notice board in the halls.

____

Today was the day when they were to be reassigned to their new classes for the semester, yet because of all the drama today, even though Jasmine had left home super early to be in school early enough to get the best seats, all of Goldie's drama had left them completely out of time.

They hadn't even checked the notice board yet for their assigned classes, speak little of heading over for class, and the bell had gone off for the first period already!

It would be a miracle to get good seats.

Immediately, Jasmine bolts through the bustling halls with Goldie in tow, as she heads to the notice board.

Last year, when they were in the 11th Grade, Goldie was in the same class as Jasmine and Leroy.

She was hopeful that she and Jasmine would get the same class for their final year of High School.

They swiftly arrive at the bulletin board, now sparsely populated to find their names on the board.

___

Meanwhile…

Walking to class right after hearing the bell ring, Ryan Muller and Leroy head over to their assigned classes, looking a pretty sight as they walk side by side, giving little attention to the students crowding the halls as they give way for them to pass through unhindered watching with admiration.

"So, you like her?", asks Leroy all of a sudden.

"What?", questions Ryan, puzzled as he turns to look at his friend, Leroy.

"Goldie. The girl from this morning. I saw how you looked at her."
