Chapter 18: 17

Braavos - House with the red door

Eragon Targaryen

----

Soon we finish eating and I listen in on them talking, mainly about back in the day. I am learning a few new things about my brothers, Rhaenyra is extra excited hearing about her dad.

"Here, these are for you guys." Elia pulls out a whole mass of rolled-up parchment each sealed to keep the contents hidden.

She hands each of us three of them and I begin to open one of mine, a hand swats my own away from the seal and I look up with a frown. Mother is looking at me with narrowed eyes daring me to say something against her. After I put the papers down I notice everyone looking at me and slip back into my chair and sit up straight.

"I was going to say that there from your nieces and nephew, and cousins." she tacks on the extra bit while glancing at Shiera and Rhaenyra. Seeing they're not going to say anything else, I grab my three notes, stand up from the table, and turn to leave. It's quite exciting to get a message from people I have never seen, well that and its the first message I have ever gotten.

"Eragon!" I turn and see Danny follow after me, once she catches up we head to our room.

----

I sit by the window in a chair I pulled up to it and open the first one, the seal is a sun with a spear through it and I frown a bit. They should use a house Targaryen seal in my own opinion, with it like this they don't look like they are proud of their blood. We have quite a few of them in mom's room, so I plan to send one back with Elia in case they just don't have one.

Opening it up I hold it into the light to get a better look at it and have to squint slightly at the extremally small handwriting, it's like they tried to fit as much as possible.

' Hello Eragon, this is your niece Rhaenys. If anyone asks it was my idea to send you each letters, though Aegon and Visenya did help me in stealing the ink and parchment. Besides the point, I wanted to say hello from across the narrow sea, Hello. I don't know much about you, but I am going to assume you like to fight as I do. So you better be prepared to face my spear when we meet for the first time, I look forward to showing you my skills. Not much room is left on this so I will just hope you do like to fight, if not we can ride horses or do something fun. Bye for now, I hope to meet you soon. '

"She seems a bit, how should I say... excited?" I run my left hand through my hair and look over at Danny who has her knees tucked into her chest as she reads one of hers. The common tongue's written langue can be a bit harder since we are used to Valyrian. Most of the books we have acquired are in Valyrian and the ones that were brought with us are mainly Common tongue. Shiera can read five different ones at this point if not more, she is good at that kind of thing.

"This one was from Visenya, she seems like she didn't know what to write about. Is it weird I never really thought about them being real? I know they are real, but I never thought about it like this before, kind of weird. Makes me really think about the other stuff we have heard about and know is real but I never pictured it like this before." I think I get what she is saying.

"Like how it wasn't all that different from stories, we hear of them and their birth and who their parents are. But seeing something they wrote is like seeing a dragon egg for the first time, it confirms they were real and not stories." She nods slowly.

"Yea, kind of like that. When did you see a dragon egg?" I blank for a moment and realize I messed up big time. I keep my features neutral and tilt my head as I look at her.

"What are you talking about, I have never seen one sadly." Her eyes go wide as if I told her the exact opposite.

"Eragon! don't lie to me like that, I can see it in your eyes you are hiding something." She walks over to me after setting the note she just was reading to the side. Standing Infront of me she crosses her arms and looks at me while squinting her eyes. "Go on spill it, where did you see real dragon eggs." I put my hand over her mouth and look toward the door and when I see it shut all the way I pull her close and whisper into her ear.

"Not now, later tonight I will tell you." She pushes me away and covers the ear while her face flushes.

"Don't spit in my ear." She pulls on her ear a little and nods to accept my offer.

"I am going to read the other two now, you should do the same." She turns on her heels in a huff and sits in her spot again, looking at me occasionally while she does.

I really messed up this time, I promised mom not to say anything. I wipe the sweat on my forehead and pray to any gods that will listen that this doesn't end up with a whopping. She hasn't brought out the belt in a long time, but I know she would if she knew I broke my promise, I shake my head and pull out a different note.

Daenerys Targaryen

I stop rubbing my ear because the tingles have gone away, looking at Eragon again he is shaking his head like a dog. He looks like he saw a ghost, he must have slipped up something if he reacted like this. But where could he have seen dragon eggs, and who would have them?

Us Targaryens have dragon eggs, so was it Mom or Shaena? I doubt he saw them out in Braavos somewhere, he would have told me if that was the case.

The fact he reacted like that means it was a secret so it was most likely mom or Shaena and if that's the case it was mom. Mom is the only one he would keep a promise to from me, he told me about the time he saw Shaena sneaking out with Cynthia and she told him to keep it a secret. Where would mom keep eggs hidden this long from us though?

I think about her room and remember the chest she never opens and how she always keeps something on top of it. I smile when I figure out the big secret on my own, looking back at Eragon he is holding up a note with similar handwriting to the one I just read from Visenya. It looks like she wrote even more on his, all she said to me was that she looks forward to meeting and she hopes I stay healthy.

"What did she write you?" I ask as I open the seal on a different one.

"She just wrote she is looking forward to meeting and that she will show me around when I get there. What if we don't meet in Dorne though?" I ignore his mumblings, if we don't meet in Dorne where would we meet?

' Hi Daenerys, this is Aegon and I am writing to say hello. I also was writing because my sisters wanted to do it so I didn't want to be the odd one out. I hope that we can meet sometime soon, it would be nice to meet some more family. '

What even was the point in wasting the ink for this?

Rhaella Targaryen

----

"So, I guess this has been eating at me since I first saw him. Eragon looks like a smaller and more robust Rhaegar." I smile, it is true that he looks a lot like his oldest brother with more meat on him. It is a good thing though, Rhaegar was not scrawny but he also wasn't as big as Eragon was at this age. I hope that means that Eragon will continue to be big and strong, he will be safer that way.

"He is, sometimes I am astonished by their resemblance. He can't sing as well but he still occasionally tries when the girls are pulling him along to do so. That and their personalities are vastly different, Eragon doesn't have a lick of Rhaegars gloominess." Shaena goes on as she pulls apart a letter from the kids and begins to read it. I will wait until tonight to read mine, I will most certainly cry when I see what they wrote even if it's just common greetings. I have missed almost all of their life's so far and that makes me very upset, seeing them writing messages to me will just confirm their grown.

"Yea, I don't think I would ever see Rhaegar doing something like unloading a boat." She says a bit pointedly.

"You saw him at the docks?" I ask, she nods with a frown.

"He shouldn't be doing that kind of stuff, not only is he in danger if someone recognizes who he might be but he is also a prince of the seven kingdoms." I couldn't agree more, but if it's not that then he is jumping the wall to run off to get in trouble somewhere else.

"I know, but if it's not that it's something else and at least there he knows the people and will recognize someone suspicious trying to approach him. He gets anxious if he sits still for too long and I blame it on his upbringing, he shouldn't be confined to a house just for being born. All of them shouldn't be stuck in here like they're in prison or something." She frowns even more before sighing and slouching back into her chair.

"I guess, the kids in Sunspear have an entire Palace to run around and the occasional trip to the water gardens to relax for a change of scenery." Shaena sets down the message and chips in.

"Not just the young ones, I am about to go crazy as well. I am ready to get out and go riding or even just to watch a tourney or something." I nod also being fed up with being here, but ultimately we needed the cramped and solitary life to keep the kids safe.

"From the way, Viserys was talking he isn't going to wait much longer before he does something." Elia comments while spinning her drink by the rim.

"He has it the worst, he feels he needs to prove it to the world and himself that he can take back what belongs to our family." I worry about him and the way he keeps acting out, he needs to get over his ideas and come to reality where there is a mountain of a climb ahead of us to get back what we had.

"That is why he was ready to marry Arianne right here and now to get an army. We have to wait until the right time but he looked very happy after hearing the offer. Though I hope he realizes that he needs more than the Dornish spears to take the throne. We can hold off invaders in the deserts very well and that's why Robert likely hasn't attacked. He knows we are there, he isn't that stupid but if we left Dorne he would bring the full might of the kingdoms down onto us." That is the main problem, Viserys would rather die fighting at this point than continue to have someone else on his throne.

A yawn escapes me and is followed by a yawn from Shaena.

"That is the case, but we can discuss this tomorrow. Are you waiting for your brother to come back to take you to where ever he went?" I ask and she sends a quick look to Shaena.

"I was going to stay with my good sister, it's been so long since we have seen each other and I would hate to part with her so soon." I stand up.

"Well, have fun you two, I will see you for breakfast then." I walk away while they both start mumbling about different things, I am sure Shaena has been dying to talk to an old friend and remember the old days.
