Chapter 11: "No rules? Seriously?"
"Good morning, Grace."
The sudden voice startled me. I turned around to look at Dominic standing behind me in his three piece office suits, fully showered.
"Good morning, Dominic." I wished him back politely as I turned toward him completely.
I think he didn't hear the conversation between me and Mr Rude. And I hope he didn't notice the tears because it would be difficult to explain to him the reason for their presence.
"Let's go to my office and have a little talk. Then we will go for breakfast. Ok?" He asked carefully as if not to pressurise me.
So, here comes the rules that I have to obey and follow. It's not new for me as I always had rules in my previous foster families that I had to follow.
And let me tell you, they were really strict.
I just hope the rules aren't that strict this time.
I nodded and quickly followed after him to some other corner in this huge mansion. The corridor we were passing by has some beautiful art pieces here and there. I don't know where I am going. I badly need a tour of this house if I don't wanna get lost and die in a corner.
We reached the office and I already forgot the way back. He opened the door and led me to the couch that they have at the corner.
"You slept well? I heard Dylan was with you all night. I hope he didn't disturb you much." He said after we settled on the couch comfortably.
"No, he didn't disturb me at all. He is very sweet. I slept well." I assured him with a smile.
He chuckled.
"Never judge someone so soon, Grace dear. I am not saying that you misjudged Dylan, it's just a small lesson for you. Remember it in every phase of your life." He said while looking directly in my eyes.
"Will do. Thank you." I said.
I smiled and wondered if I judged Damon quickly like Dominic mentioned. Only time will say..
Ohh, yeah I can call him Damon in my head right? Yeah, I can.
Then I concentrated back on Dominic. The rules will be here any moment.
"I know it's very difficult to adjust to a new life." He started.
"Well not for me." I interrupted while shrugging my shoulders
"Oh, yeah. Not for you. But let me tell you it's gonna be very different from your other experiences." He said in a little bit of a gloomy tone.
I hope so.
"We are a big family. And now you are also part of our family. Family respect each other, love each other and support each other. We are one strong family, the family our grandparents worked so hard to maintain. I know you will face challenges in future to get along with everyone. Because let me warn you some of your brothers and cousin brothers are really stubborn and hard nuts to crack. I know you already got a glimpse." He took a pause for me to process everything.
Yeah.. I already got a glimpse. Not a good sight though.
"By the time you go, you will find a lot of things about our family, about us. And it won't be easy to accept all the things. But we will help you and protect you. " He continued to explain.
Protect me… From what? Or should I say from whom?
Ignoring the rising questions, I registered each and every word that Dominic said in my head.
But where are the rules?
"Remember you asked me a question last night?" He asked.
I nodded. I remember well.
I had asked him if he also thought that I was his lost sister. He didn't answer then.
"The answer to your question is a hard puzzle. And I am trying very hard to solve it. Some of the part of this puzzle is yet to be found. And some parts of the puzzle settled very well with each other." He said with a frown.
He hinted to the points that Dylan mentioned at the car.
"But don't worry. I will solve this puzzle very soon and the answer will be in our favour. I know that. Then you won't have to try very hard to crack them." He said with determination.
I wonder what did he mean by that the answer will be in his favour...
"It will take some time for you to settle with everything. But I know Dylan will help you with everything. That kid is very excited from the time you came here." He chuckled.
I couldn't agree more.
"As it's summer vacation going on, your school will start after two weeks. You will be going to the same school as Dylan. Some of your other cousins also go there. I will talk to the school community about your admission. I am sure you will make us proud." He said with a smile.
"I will try my best, Dominic." I replied confidently.
"I know you will." He smiled.
"Where do they live? The cousins and their families, I mean.."
"Some of them live in this city only and some in different states for business. Only two of our uncles and their families live here excluding us. They have their own house. It's around a 30 minutes drive from here." He explained.
"We often have family dinners or guests like business partners, family friends over. Though it's vacation going on that's why there won't be any family gatherings for two weeks as they went to a different state to visit our grandparents and other uncles. But we will have our family friends over. In fact some of our really close family friends are visiting today. You don't have to be present if you don't want to." He said in an assuring tone.
I tried to process everything he said in the last 5 minutes.
It's going to be harder than I thought.
"Okay. I got it." I said.
"That's great. Just remember one thing you will always have me and Dylan by your side till I solve everything. We will help you in everything."
I smiled at him gratefully.
"Thank you."
"Okay. Let's go and have breakfast." He stood up.
"Wait!"
He stopped and looked at me.
"You still didn't tell me the rules?" I looked at him in confusion.
"Rules?" He also sounded confused.
"Yeah like what can I do, what I can't, where can I go, where can I not, when I have to sleep, where am I forbidden to go, how to behave in front of your guests and all, you know?" I gave him a pointed look.
He listened to me attentively. Then he sat down again. He held my hand and looked into my eyes.
"Grace, dear, You are our sister not someone who works for us to follow rules. You are free to do everything you wish for. Visit anywhere you want. Behave just like the way you are. We will get everything you wish for in a blink, what you have to do is just ask. We will never chain your feets." He said with utter seriousness.
I still can't believe that I don't have to follow any crap rules like I had to follow before.
"But if you are talking about rules, I will tell you some after school starts. Ok?"
"So, I do have to follow rules." I confirmed.
"Yeah, but it's not anything too much. It's for your own betterment." He said with a chuckle.
"And if you ever find me behaving cold, just remember it's never for you and my family. But I have to behave cold sometimes as I have some really idiot brothers to handle." He chuckled at the last of his sentence.
I nodded happily.
"Let's go and fill that small tummy of yours." He held my hand and led me till the dining table.
Dylan was already sitting there impatiently. His eyes lit up as soon as he saw me.
"What took you so long? I am hungry and I can't eat without my dear sister." He pouted.
"Sorry." I apologized and took a seat beside him.
"Don't apologize with no fault of yours, doll." He said softly.
"I will remember it." I nodded with a smile.
"Okay, let's dig in."
We started having the most delicious breakfast I ever had.
I couldn't help but wonder where Damon was. If he's not having breakfast here because of me then I would be really guilty.
"Don't worry about Damon. He already had his breakfast when you were with Dominic. He had plans with his friends today, that's why he left early." Dylan answered my question without me even asking it.
He really notices my every expression. Gotta be careful around him.
After breakfast Dominic went to the office. He also gave me a small hug! That's new!
I am now in the living room with Dylan.
"So doll, let's give you a tour of the house."
Yeah, I badly need it..
