Chapter 30: Back to Work

Next to Torterra lay Jaeger's hand. A metal knife was embedded in his hand. Judging from the fight, these knives weren't strong enough, but it wouldn't hurt to have one. He picked up the knife and began to clamp the metal of Jaeger's wrist around the base of the knife, making a makeshift handle.

Returning to the battlefield, Torterra looked at the still living monster. He gradually regained consciousness and began to move somewhat erratically. He could not be allowed to recover, and there was no need to take him prisoner. One caterpillar brain would be enough to drift, so there was no need to take control of another Kaiju.

With a quick movement of the knife, he finished it off, and then separated a part for himself. He cauterized the knife wounds with fire so that the toxic blood would not spill out and contaminate the earth any more.

After a moment of pity, Torterra felt anger. He looked very terrible as he left town. In one hand he carried a part of the Kaiju scorched by fire, and in the other hand he held a knife. Descending the cliff, Torterra headed back to his place of work.

Sitting on the foundation of his future home, he stared into the void of the ocean and tried to collect his thoughts. He was wrong this time. He needed to take on at least 2-3 more attacks, and only after that pass the baton to people. But people's constant attacks on him broke his resolve and made him make mistakes. The problems of understanding between him and the people were to be expected, so it was his fault that he took a step back too soon.

While he was thinking, a school of fish swam towards him. They circled around him and swam into the gaps between his armor plates. This distracted him from his thoughts a bit, and he surveyed his surroundings. Algae and corals were growing everywhere. Many fish swam, and various types of predators hid in the seaweed, waiting for their prey. A little further he saw whales hunting for fish. Everything around him was beautiful and alive.

He noticed that various algae were growing around the construction site, but he did not pay attention to it. Now he looked at it from the other side. At such a depth (200 meters) there should not be so much vegetation and coral, especially in the middle of the ocean, far from the islands. Rising from the foundation, he wanted to check something. Torterra swam to the lava source.

There were also many plants and corals around it along the way. They became less and less on the way to the depth of the volcano, but the number of various fish did not decrease. It was worth it for him to leave the path he had trodden and after swimming somewhere else, everything returned to the usual landscape of the bottom of the ocean: a desert and lifeless environment.

"Looks like my body's origin is indeed a monsterverse titan! Even the environmental impact is the same." This was great news. With his presence, he could somehow stimulate the development of plants. And judging by the fact that he hadn't noticed this effect before, it could mean that the more radiation he absorbed, the more this effect would manifest itself.

He may need to travel the world and absorb all the sources of radiation he can find, and not necessarily be limited to the Pacific region. The only thing he did not want was to spend half a year in each place. "I have to figure it out somehow, maybe I can learn to control this ability and speed it up." If it can absorb radiation faster, then it has a chance to rid the planet of pollution and give a boost to development by improving ecology.

It was a good idea, but as long as the Kaiju were coming out of the portal and destroying everything and polluting the water with their blood, Torterra wouldn't be able to achieve much. Anything he gives a push to develop will be destroyed by the toxic Kaiju blood. But this will not prevent him from walking through the sources of radiation in the world.

It was possible to make some sort of radioactive waste repository inside his future home and constantly absorb the radiation, but Torterra immediately dismissed the idea. He planned to interact more and more with people, and if his house was radioactive, then no one would come there.

After resting a little from the stress, Torterra got to work. Or rather, he continued to train, dragging lava and stones. The foundation was already ready, and it was necessary to start making bricks and start building.

5 months later

There was a problem with the brick. It was necessary to first make a reusable form from separate flat walls. After the lava was poured, it was necessary to wait two weeks for it to harden, and to disassemble the mold to get the bricks. Even after that, the 50 by 100 meter brick still took a couple of weeks to cool down in the middle. All this was so difficult that Torterra simply decided to make another layer of foundation 100 meters high and thus leave the ocean.

Five months were enough for this, and now Torterra stood in a wide area in the middle of the ocean. The flat and smooth surface of a square shape with a size of 1 square kilometer impressed people who flew over this area. The artificial island grew in the middle of the ocean in just 1 year. The island was strong enough for Torterra to walk on without damaging the floor.

With his increased strength, he could carry more and more. Sometimes he was distracted and made molds for future bricks, and now he began pouring lava into them. A month later, Torterra erected the first walls. He couldn't make a stone slab big enough to make the roof, so he decided to use a pyramid-like shape inside. Outwardly, the shape was more like an ordinary cube. It wasn't very pretty, but it looked powerful and heavy. This building could stand for a millennium.

During construction, he found a new enemy. It was a "weed"! Algae and corals were advancing uncontrollably from all sides. Even the sand and dust brought by the wind began to give birth to some greenery. He didn't even have time to finish building his house, as it already had to be cleaned.

This enemy could not be defeated. Even after cleaning, after a few days everything returned. So Torterra gave up, for now. Because a Kaiju was approaching him.

Just like the last time, he didn't feel the Kaiju until he got close. But this time it seemed to be heading straight for him. It was an attack solely to kill him. The aliens decided not to resort to tricks, but to hit him directly. It seems that the results of their work were not satisfactory, and they decided to remove the culprit.

Torterra was ready, sitting in the middle of the square on a large brick, knife in hand. This was his territory, his home, and he was ready to defend his life here. It didn't make sense to go underwater and fight there, maybe it was a type of Kaiju that specialized in fighting underwater.

POV: Military

Sirens sounded on the ships near the island built by Torterra. People were also preparing. Everyone took combat positions, and the pilots ran to their cars. Even though it wasn't an attack on a city, they still had to be ready. And if necessary, they could intervene.

"Sir! We have received a message from headquarters. A new Jaeger has been sent to us!" the liaison informed his captain.

"Okay, when will he arrive?" replied the captain of the aircraft carrier.

"In 20 hours, Sir."

"When will the Kaiju arrive?"

"18 hours."

"They won't make it, hopefully Torterra will last two hours."

"Sir! He's developed quite a lot over the last year, Kaiju of the first and second categories do not pose a threat to him, I don't think he'll need our help at all," replied the liaison.

"Tell headquarters to hurry."

"Yes sir!"

POV: Torterra

"When will that Kaiju come?! I've been sitting here all day! I thought I was a turtle here, but it turns out there are even slower creatures than me," joked Torterra. His tail was already hurting from sitting in one place all day. Therefore, he decided to stretch his muscles before the fight, walking on his "green" island.

Kaiju finally appeared in the middle of the night. The water began to part, and a huge Kaiju appeared on the platform. He was fully armored, not a single square centimeter of his body was not free of the armor. Its height was 60-70 meters. Four legs ended in sharp ends, and instead of hands he had two large claws. He was fat and not much shorter than Torterra. The Kaiju had several pairs of small shrimp-like claws on its chest, but the overall appearance resembled that of a crab.

The muzzle was also covered with armor plates, and two very long, straight horns protruded from the back. It will be a tough opponent, but Torterra was not afraid. He already had experience fighting Kaiju. Taking a step forward, he roared, showing his strength and willingness to fight.
