Chapter 26: Stitches

The doctor entered while I watched Adonis worry over me. He must have thought we were in some kind of romantic moment because he cleared his throat loudly after a moment. I turned my head slowly as I still felt quite heavy. The weight of my body has lifted a bit and I felt slightly less sluggish. He stood somewhat in the center of the door and bed looking over some paperwork. He appeared around his early thirties but well aged like fine whine. He had a handsome short beard and thick black hair. His nose was quite pointed and with his caramel skin tone, I guessed he may be Middle Eastern. He wasn't as tall as Adonis though. He was around the 5'8 mark. After he looked over his paperwork he sat it on the small sink and counter near the door. I waited quietly, ogling the handsome man. He washed his hands and placed gloves on. I could see Adonis folding his arms carefully watching over me. He was always so over protective. Maybe he meant it as a brother but I hoped in my heart he had cared for me.

"So Ms. Jones," the doctor said in a professional voice, "my name is Doctor Shalhoub. I ran a few tests and I think I know what caused your incident. Mr. Grey here filled me in on what he saw but I have some questions for you. Do you feel up to talking with me?" He seemed gentle. His voice was soft and aromatic. I could see Adonis shifting a bit out of the corner in my eye.

"What questions do you have?" I asked my voice unintentionally an octave higher. He smiled a bright white smile and grabbed his stethoscope from around his neck. He casually walked over to me and like a feather placed the head of it on my chest. Adonis took a large step closer the bed. Shalhoub listened to my heart and lungs while we remained silent. Adonis brooded as he hovered.

"Can you explain what happened in your own words," he said seriously.

"At the time of the incident, I began to feel light headed and nauseous. I felt like I couldn't breath because my airway constricted. The next thing I know everything went black and I woke up here with a head injury." He rubbed the corners of his beard, pondering his words carefully. I felt somewhat nervous waiting for him to answer.

"At any point we're you in an enclosed space with cleaners containing chlorine?" He questioned.

"No," I thought carefully, "There was a house fire, during overhaul I removed my SCBA as conditions were clear. I was taking a look around when I found a fire pit containing at least twenty white round tablets and melted plastic. It was smoldering a bit still and I suspected it might chlorine and pointed it out to my superior. I started to not feel well while standing then while standing with him. Though I thought is was my lack of food intake After moving away and ordering food I felt tired but nothing serious. Is Smith alright? I think I saw him take a bucket of that stuff in his car as evidence." I was careless. Smith, should have known, right? Chlorine can be used as an explosive if in the right chemical conditions.

"As long as the gas has stopped forming it should be okay. Chlorine tablets alone are not dangerous or flammable." The doc's expression appeared reassuring.

"Right, plus Randy rolled down all the windows and let it sit before he left. Although I'm not sure why he took the whole fire pit full." Adonis looked quizzically.

"We are going to monitor you for a few hours and then you can go home. You hit your head pretty hard and it required stitches. I recommend no hats, helmets or masks until the stitches are out. We will check back in two weeks. If you begin to experience any other symptoms let us know." After he finished that he turned and left. I felt bored sitting in a hospital bed. Adonis hovered next to me arms still folded. He looked expectant.

"Can I help you," I said grouchily.

"Oh, I wait here all day while you're acting like sleeping beauty, and then I get to watch you ogle your doctor." He huffed with eyes full of worry. I started to giggle because he acted like a jealous older brother.

"Jealous much? I wasn't ogling anyone. I was listening intently," I chortled softly.

"If you call listening looking a man over head to two. Who's jealous anyway!" He turned slightly away from me his ears a bit red.

"Since when do you get to be so possessive, hm?" I pushed him because I felt a little aggravated. He acted so childish all the time. He was like a toddler who never wanting to share his toys. It made me feel like the object of his affection but that wasn't what I wanted from him. My father taught me that objects are left behind in this world when they are no longer useful and to love is to be equal.

"Since when? Since you keep scaring me to death. When are you gonna stop being such a dunce. If you keep on like this you're not gonna be around very long." His voice deepened as he spoke angrily with me. He grabbed his coat and stomped out. My hear tightened as he left. This wasn't really what I wanted. Did I really have feelings for such a person? Adonis felt so foreign to me. Truly I could not read the man. Maybe leaving is what is best. Our situation complicated everything. I laid quietly with my eyes closed for a while until finally drifting to sleep again.
