Chapter 1: Chapter 1 Hiring

'Damn! When will my job search end? The pocket money I brought is running out, but not even one company accepted me. Is it this hard to find a job these days?'

Tired, Jen sat on the gutter on the side of the road while thirstily drinking the bottle of water she had in her hand. It's not cold anymore because she's been holding it for three hours. Jen looked around and saw a mouth-watering pizza being eaten by a customer inside the pizza parlor. Her stomach immediately growled. 'Now I feel hungry.' Jen sighed exasperatingly and pouted in defeat, for she knew that she could not afford to buy pizza. The pizza cost 80 pesos per slice. She fished out the coins from her pocket and count them, hoping that she still can buy a biscuit to ease her hunger. But her shoulders fell when she realized that she only had 50 pesos. Just right for her fare, going back to her home. Jen took a deep breath and put the coins she was holding back into her pocket in defeat. 'Guess I need to go home now before I pass out from hunger on the road.'

Jen looked through the window of the pizza parlor again and swallowed her saliva as the customer inside took a bite of a slice of Hawaiian pizza. She rubbed her tummy as it growled. 'Don't protest, my dear worms, even if I want to feed you, we don't have money for now.' She thought. 'It is better if I leave in this instant before I completely go crazy and think of robbing this pizza parlor and demand food.' She said to herself before leaving the area.

While walking on the side of the street, she noticed a long line formed alongside the building. She looked up and found out that the building was Buenavista Corporation. The company was owned by one of the most well-known bachelor billionaires in the country, Angelo Buenavista. She got curious, so she approached the lady on the line.

"Miss," she called. The lady made a scrutinizing look while looking at her from head to toe. The lady looks intimidating, but she shrugged it off and continued asking the woman. "I'm just wondering, what line is this for?"

"Buenavista Corporation is looking for a new executive assistant." The woman informed her, which made Jen's eyes light up. 'Hiring? That means it's work! What a lucky day! I thought my day would end up with nothing. This is my chance… This time I will try my best to get this job.' Her eyes twinkled as she clasped her hands.

"Is that so? May I know where is the end of the line?" She asked politely with a smile, but her smile faded when she noticed the lady's face turned sour.

The lady sneered. "You?" The woman asked in a mocking tone, which made her feel uneasy.

Jen looked at her clothes. She was wearing a white button-down polo shirt and black slacks, which she usually wore whenever she looking for a job. Her shoes were black, but it was going to give up as the sole will going to tear apart from its body. She could also smell herself as if she had been soaking under the sun for several hours. "If I were you, don't waste your time and energy here. With your looks, you're not fit to be a secretary." The lady looked at her in disgust. "Do you know what suits you? Begar. You looked like a beggar on the street." The lady flips her hair before she walked forward as the line began moving.

Jen snorted and glared at the woman who humiliated her secretly before looking for the end of the line. Jen fell in line, and a guard gave her a number. She's the 100th candidate who applied for the position. Luckily, she got the last line for the day.

She felt nervous and, at the same time, hungry. Her stomach growled once again and her hands were shaking. She could even feel cold sweats all over her body. 'I hope I won't pass out later," she thought. It was six in the evening and she was still on the line.

There were only two candidates left before her, and she felt anxious. Who wouldn't be? She's worried that she might pass out in front of the panelists, and she couldn't forget what the lady had told her. She even heard the other applicants talking about their degrees and she was the only one she thought who didn't graduate college. The only thing Jen hold on to was her determination and perseverance to get a job.

Jen went inside the room as her name got called. Three panelists looked at her as she entered. Jen suddenly felt intimidated, especially when she looked at the man in the middle. It was Angelo Buenavista, the CEO of Buenavista corporation. On his left side, is a woman in her 30s. She is the HR manager of the company. On his right hand, was the COO of the company, Caleb Cruz.

"Good evening," she greeted the panel with a smile.

The two panelists looked at the CV she gave to them as soon as she entered the room, except for Angelo, who was staring at her. "Miss Jen Salvador. Tell us about yourself," Caleb commanded her.

Jen took a deep breath before she began to speak. "I am Jen Salvador, 28 years old. I live in Cavite city. My first job was in a supermarket as a sales clerk. I've been working there for only 6 months. I only graduated high school, and never went into college. But I will do my best to do my work and love my work as if my life will depend on it." Jen looked at them one by one. The HR raised a brow as if she was not satisfied with what Jen had said. Then Jen turned her gaze to Caleb, who had a stoic look on his face. But when her eyes met Angelo, she suddenly felt anxious and immediately looked away. 'I've noticed he's been staring at me the whole time. The way he looked at me… It feels like…. he knew me?' she wondered, but then Jen shocked her head from her thoughts. 'No, this can't be. I just met him now. It's impossible if we met before.' Jen looked at Angelo again. And by the way, he looked at her, his eyes filled with longing.

"With your credentials, you are not suitable for the job. I'm sorry, Miss… but you may-"

"Stop!" All their eyes turned to Angelo when he interrupted what the HR was about to say. "You can find a new secretary, but leave us for a minute," Angelo commanded as he looked at the two people. The HR and Caleb frowned at him. But they have no choice but to leave the room.

Jen was looking at the two people who are exiting the room, quizzically. 'What is happening? Why he wanted to talk to me in private?' she wondered.

"Jen Sandoval," Jen became alert and sat straight in her seat, the moment she heard her name got called.

"You're hired." Jen frowned at what Angelo had said.

"Me?" she pointed at herself while looking at the man in front of her in disbelief. "But, the HR said I'm not suitable for the job, Sir."

"No… I mean… I am hiring you to be my secret Nanny,"
