Chapter 1: The System Strikes

Kennon lay in his bed with a dull look on his face. A fly buzzes around above his head, buzzing in and out of the shadows on the ceiling. He rolls over and glances at his computer. "I guess I'll play some games." He mutters under his breath before finally getting up and shuffling over to his chair. His dead eyes scan the glowing blue screen, passing by all the games he had grown tired of. A deep sigh escapes his lips as he opens the internet browser. After typing 'games to play when you are bored," he presses enter.

Just as the key is pressed in, his screen turns black, causing the room to become slightly darker. The sudden occurrence causes Kennon to sit up straighter as he glances towards the PC. His brows furrowed with the realization that the PC is still on and running with a glowing power button. Looking back to the monitor, he smacks it once in annoyance. Immediately after the contact of his blow, the screen lights up again but this time, the only thing displayed is a glowing box. 'Are you tired of seeing and doing the same old things every day?' The text in the box reads.

Kennon clicks his tongue in annoyance. "Ad companies are getting more and more bold with their marketing these days." Despite his words, he feels an incomprehensible urge to see where the pop-up takes him. He hovers his cursor over the 'yes' button and clicks it without much more hesitation. The screen promptly changes again as another question pops up. Kennon's brow twitches as he reads the question; 'Do you think evolution is cool?'

"What is this shitty advertisement scheme?" he questions aloud. "I would much rather see a trailer than answer a dull questionnaire." His actions betrayed his words though, as he clicked 'yes' again.

'Are you ready?' the screen changes again.

This time Kennon doesn't even take the time to complain about the questions and immediately answers 'yes' with impatience, wanting to see the game that he was convinced was being advertised. Suddenly, time seems to freeze as Kennon finds himself unable to move anymore. The fly that had been bothering him when he lay in his bed is now also frozen in front of his eyes, with its wings spread wide open, mid flight. He isn't given much time to comprehend his situation before a tear in space is split open right below his ceiling and a hand that looks like it's made out of the universe itself grasps his frozen body. He gets pulled into the spatial tear and his vision turns black.

'Choose your beginning evolutionary path.'

-Recovery focused

-Strength focused

-Mental focused

"What the fuck is this?" Kennon curses internally as he couldn't sense his body anymore. It was as though the options listed in front of him had become the only reality he could perceive and everything else had melted away. He wanted to cry but was unable to… He wanted to run away but had no physical body to run with… all that was left was his ability to choose. Anxiety and fear of the unknown flooded his mind but those are never permanent feelings. After what felt like hours, they slowly disappeared and he began to seriously ponder his situation. Was this a hallucination? Had he died? What would happen if he went along with this outlandish situation and actually chose an option?

Kennon decided he was left with no other choice but to select an evolution path in front of him. Despite his decision, he still didn't fully understand what the choices really represented. For example, what would he be evolving as? A dog? A human? Or something else entirely? Where would his evolutions take place? Back at his house? A brand new world? Despite the questions he had, the uncertainty actually made his choice easier.

'Since I don't know what kind of situation I will be in after selecting the options, I feel like recovery will be the best in case I encounter danger and become injured.' He thought to himself internally. Strength would not solve every problem he encountered and the "mental focused" evolution path was too vague for him to know what it really represented. In addition, because he didn't actually know what would happen after his choice, there's no way one selection would be better than another so he might as well make a choice to change his current predicament and perhaps he would have time to regret it later. 'I choose the recovery focused evolutionary path!' he exclaimed internally.
