Chapter 10: Engagement

Gu Tan walked towards the village while greeting many people on the way. He had used his entire childhood to build a great reputation around the village.

"Little Tan, catch it!" As he walked forward, suddenly a shopkeeper spoke while trying a round object towards him. Gu Tan's reflexes tingled as he raised his right hand at the left side of his face and caught the object. It was an apple.

Gu Tan turned around and smiled "Thank you, uncle Lin!"

"Haha! Your reflexes never cease to amaze me. By the way, congratulation on awakening two rank ninth martial souls!" The shopkeeper had a black mustache and cleaned shaved chin. He had a muscular body and brown skin.

"Little Tan, congratulation!"

"Yes, Little Tan, Congratulation! Don't forget to come and meet Mei Mei!"

"Little Tan, my Xiao'er misses you a lot. Don't forget to meet her."

Gu Tan couldn't help but roll his eyes hearing those words. The aunts around him were trying to tie their daughters with him. Unfortunately, Gu Tan wasn't interested in them.

Shopkeeper Lin gave him a smirk as well. Gu Tan didn't stay there for long. He just kept the relationship cool and ran away. After a few minutes, he reached his home. As he opened the door, he saw his mother and father sitting on the couch.

But, there were few more guests sitting together. When Gu Shui saw her son, her eyes gleamed with brightness.

"Tanner, you came at the correct time. We were just discussing your engagement." Just when he took a step forward, his leg loses all of its strength upon hearing his mother. His face collided with the ground but he hurriedly stood up.

"Mom, I am just ten. Why are you so interested when I am not even eighteen?" Gu Tan couldn't help but argue while rushing towards his mother.

"But, who said this is marriage? We are just talking about your fiancée. Hehe! I have made a great bargain for you." Gu Shui smirked as she pointed her head at two girls standing next to the couch. Both had blush on their faces as they lowered their head.

There was a woman who glared at Gu Chen upon hearing his wife's words. Gu Chen made a crying face towards her. He didn't know how to control his wife when he comes to Gu Tan's love life.

"Ehhh!" Gu Tan turned his head at the girls and suddenly froze. Although he saw them previously, he didn't get a chance to get a closer look. But now, he was stunned. The girls in front of him were none other than Zhao Yin and Zhao Xin.

At this moment, he pretty much got an idea of what must have happened. He couldn't help but sigh.

"Mother, I will follow your wish. But for now, let's just keep it as engagement. We three know each other very well. So, we can talk another time. For now, I have some important work with dad."

Gu Tan bowed in front of his mother and spoke. After he raised his head at his father, he didn't find his father.

"Son, what are you waiting for? Didn't you say you have something important to talk about? Let's move!" Hearing Gu Chen's voice from behind, Gu Tan turned around and bitterly smiled. He turned around in an instant because he saw an intense look on his mother's face.

He and his father hurriedly left the room making Gu Shui grumpy.

"Sister Gu, my daughter loves your son but it seems he doesn't seem interested in my daughter." Zhao Sister's mother made a cold glance at Gu Shui and spoke.

"Hahaha! You don't know much about my son, Sister Zhao. He is quite shy. Isn't that right, daughter?" Gu Shui instantly made a smile as he gave her an excuse while asking Zhao Yin.

"Yes, yes, he is quite shy. Don't worry, mother! Just like he said, we are not going to marry now." Zhao Yin hurriedly replied when she saw Gu Shui's signal. After all, she was the one who loves him.

Hearing her daughter, the mother sigh "Zhao Yin, I know you love him. And, I wouldn't be surprised since he was the one who bravely saved your life four years ago. But, you have distinguished between love and admiration."

"I don't hate Gu Tan. In fact, I am grateful to him for saving my daughter. But, you have to remember. You are still a child. You don't have much experience with this. Let me ask you one last time, do you want to marry Gu Tan?"

Her mother's words made Zhao Yin startled but she quickly nodded her head "Mother, I want to be together with Gu Tan forever. I am still young. And, this might be just admiration but my heart is set on him."

Hearing those words from a ten-year-old girl was surprising for both her mother and Gu Tan's mother. They stared at each other and Zhao's mother sighed "Alright, you two can leave. I believe this is your answer as well."

Saying so, she turned her head at Zhao Xin who nodded her head. After that, Zhao Xin and Zhao Yin left the room.

"Sister Gu, I hope you can understand me. I will respect my daughter's choice but I can't turn a blind eye to everything."

Saying so, she took out a paper and started writing. Gu Shui watched it with sharp eyes. After she finished writing, she passed the paper to Gu Shui and said "We will wait till they reach eighteen. If they still love him till eighteen, they can marry each other."

"But, if they don't, the engagement will be canceled. Please sign it!"

Gu Shui narrowed her eyes but still keep smiling and signed it. After signing it, she took passed the paper back to her. Zhao took the paper and stood up.

"Sister Gu, let's talk again another day!" Saying so, she left the room.

Gu Shui also stood but her fist was clenched.

"This bitch! Who does she think she is? Wait till my son reach fourteen, your daughters won't be worthy to be his slaves. You should be grateful that I signed that letter."

Just as the strong aura burst out of her, her eyes suddenly trembled.

"Ugh!!! This again...…"

Thud!

Before she could do anything, her body fell to the ground, unconscious. A few minutes later, a maid working around saw her and shouted with wide eyes "Madam!"

At the same time,

Gu Tan was walking with his father.

Gu Chen turned his head at Gu Tan and asked "Are you okay?"

Gu Tan bites his lips, lowered his head, and nods.

Gu Chen patted his shoulder and said "People live and die! He was dead a long ago. Living as a soul, he created some new memories with you. Just cherish those memories and live our life."

Gu Tan covered his face with both of his hands for a moment and took a deep breath. After he removed his hand, he turned his head at his father and said "Father, before master left, he told me some bad news. Father, can you gather five elders. This news is very serious."

Hearing his words, Gu Chen frowned but seeing his son's serious expression, he nodded his head. And, just when he turned around, Gu Tan spoke "And father, after the meeting, will you follow the uncle for a while in dark?"

Now, Gu Chen's mood got even worse. But, he didn't turn back. He nodded his head and left. It was a miracle but due to the monk, his son was even better than him in many cases. At least, he still believes that there was a monk inside Gu Tan.

Seeing his father leave, Gu Tan also left towards a house. Xuan Village doesn't have any village chief. Because people believe having a single leader might create suppression, they established the five elders system.

Among these five elders, one is his uncle. Because his father wasn't interested in these politics and management, he didn't become the elder. The five elders vote for any major decision and if the majority supports one thing, they will do that exact thing otherwise decision will be put in a halt.

Gu Tan wanted to change this. The only way to fulfill his quest is by becoming the leader of the village. This made him wonder. Can he truly lives up to his name and influence others by his words?

He did try it. That's why he didn't use the brute strength method rather kept creating a popular reputation in the village. For this, he had some advantages. He knew the people. He knew the future. And, he had the status.

Gu Family was still a big family in this village. But, there was one major problem with his planning. Because his plan would be completely ruined if he uses brute force. So, no matter the situation, he can't force them.

Because if he does, then everything he planned for will backfire.
