Chapter 2: First Disciple

While he was lost in thought, a little girl that looked about 11 or 12 years old pulled on his arm.

"Mister? Are you a fairy?"

"F-fairy?" Liu Feng was disoriented before figuring out what she meant.

Fairy. That was the colloquial term for cultivators in this place of commoners.

"Ah, yes. I am a fairy. Look."

With a flick of his finger, a tiny wisp of wind blew towards the little girl, landing on her flat nose. Her eyes grew wide as they sparkled.

"Wow, wow! That was amazing, mister!"

Liu Feng's mood lightened from the little girl's enthusiasm. Her little pigtails bounced as she jumped up and down.

"I heard from my friends that a fairy mister was recruiting disciples, so I came here! Mister, if I become your disciple, will you teach me how to do that?"

"Of course!"

The little girl triggered Liu Feng's most important keyword right now, disciple. As such, Liu Feng became a lot more active in the conversation.

"Not only that, but tons more cool tricks like that! And eventually, you'll be able to learn how to fly!"

"Flying?" The little girl was naturally very interested in flying. All kids had dreams of flying through the skies. "Mister, make me your disciple, please!"

Liu Feng felt a tinge of guilt when he saw the little girl's excitement. After all, he couldn't even fly himself, how was he supposed to teach someone else?

Regardless, he had no choice. He had been coming back to this village for over a week now yielding zero results. Beggar-looking fellows like him couldn't be choosy with who to pick.

"Alright, then call me Master!"

"Master! Master!"

[Ding! Task has been completed. Time remaining before task refresh: 6 days.]

[Unlocked new functions.]

Liu Feng was interested in the new functions, but he could not check it out as he still had to settle with the little girl.

"I'll come back for you tomorrow morning. Go ask your parents for permission, okay?"

The little girl's eyes widened. She grabbed Liu Feng's clothes with a tight grip.

"Mist- Master, are you leaving me?"

"Wha—why? What's wrong?"

"Don't leave me here, just like mommy and daddy..."

Liu Feng saw tears coming out of the girl's face and bit his lip.

What bad luck!

He had to have done something evil in his previous lives to end up scamming an orphan.

"Er, then you can come with me immediately."

As soon as he said those words, Liu Feng could swear that the tears rolled back to the girl's eyes as she instantly stopped crying and went back to smiling.

"Let's go! Let's go, master!"

Liu Feng had an exasperated expression as he brought the little girl to the sect.

.....

"Master, what are those? Why are there so many?"

Liu Feng arrived at the edge of the sect's territory.

He had learned of the little girl's name: Fanrong. She didn't seem to remember her surname.

"Well, Little Rong, those are burial mounds," Liu Feng gently put her down as he continued, "so we need to pay our respects before entering the sect."

"Ooh..."

Little Rong copied every movement that Liu Feng made, from the kneeling to the bowing.

Liu Feng giggled at her clumsy actions.

After paying his respects, he carried Little Rong once more as they went deeper into the sect's territory.

By the time they arrived, the sun had already set and the moon was starting to appear.

By now, the area was full of vegetation. Liu Feng was careful not to accidentally step on the grass growing over the burial mounds.

Eventually, they arrived at a wooden hut. It was a ham-fisted attempt at making a shelter.

"Master, is this your house?"

Liu Feng was a bit embarrassed. "Y, yeah."

"Can I live here too?"

"Ahem, I'll make you your own house."

"Wow, wow! I have my own house now!"

Liu Feng watched Little Rong. She didn't seem to be fazed by the hut's unusual appearance. Instead, she was grateful to get a house in the first place, which lightened the burden on Liu Feng's heart.

They headed inside the hut.

Liu Feng let go of Little Rong who was curious about everything and lit the lanterns up before sitting on a wooden chair he salvaged from the ruins.

"The system has new functions. First things first, I should claim the rewards."

[Congratulations to the host for completing the first task. Achievement: Taskmaster I (+1% rewards gained from tasks)]

[Congratulations to the recruitment of the host's first disciple. Achievement: Master I (+10% DP gained from Disciples)]

[Ding! Congratulations on the host for receiving: Novice Gift Pack, 100 DP.]

[Ding! Unlocked Disciple Interface.]

[Ding! Unlocked System Shop.]

[Ding! Unlocked Manual Creation.]

"Open Novice Gift Pack."

Liu Feng ignored the other rewards for now as he was excited. Usually, the Novice Gift Packs in the novels he read contained heaven-defying body constitutions or Supreme grade weapons!

[Ding! Received: Sect Master uniform, 10x Disciple uniform, 5 Quarter-Pure Spirit Stones.]

"..."

[...]

"...That's it? No more?"

The measly amount of rewards in the Novice Gift Pack stunned Liu Feng. This should be the part where he turns into the most talented being overnight!

"M, maybe the Sect Master uniform is actually a Supreme grade armor?"

[Sect Master Uniform: "Reformation must start with oneself." Can be claimed or recalled infinitely. Customizable in the System Customization tab.]

[Warning: This uniform offers no protection value.]

After reading the description, Liu Feng was lost in thought.

Why did it seem that his system was slightly scuffed?

Where is my Celestial grade heaven-defying but low key armor that was comfortable and light like silk clothing but offered protection from attacks against even the Soul Circulation Realm?!

"Calm down, calm down. I'm being too greedy. That's right. Whatever, at least it's customizable. I'm rebuilding the Great Order Sect, so I should just use the sect's design..."

Even as he tried to take his mind to a different direction, he still felt indignant.

"Nevermind that scammy gift pack. What else did I get?"

Liu Feng opened the Disciple Interface. He saw Little Rong's information on the interface.

———

Name: Shu Fanrong

Bone Age: 12

Level: 0

Realm: Mortal

Number of Spiritual Roots: 2

Spirit Root Attribute: Fire, Ice

Talent: 5

———

"Talent is 5, huh. Should be out of 10 then. System, what's my talent?"

[Ding! Host's talent is evaluated to be 8.]

"Woah! My talent is so high! Why haven't I been progressing much then?!"

No matter how much he thought about it, it didn't make sense.

Liu Feng shrugged this off for now and continued reading Little Rong's information.

"Hmm? Shu is her surname?"

Liu Feng was interested. He didn't expect to learn of his disciple's surname through the system.

Suddenly, he seemed to remember that the royal family from the neighboring territory had the surname Shu as well...

Ah! Was this it?

From the start, Liu Feng had always been confused as to why, as a transmigrator, he was unlucky.

"Now I get it. I'm getting the 'disciple is the protagonist of a novel' trope, aren't I?"

Although he glanced over her mediocre attributes once more and doubted himself, the thought of Shu Fanrong's parents having left her alone made him more confident!

"That's right! She's an orphan! Her parents must be some powerful people, right? They had to hide her in a remote place like this for her own good!"

He looked at the soft glow of the moon and sighed.

"Rest assured, I'll live a good and luxurious life."

.....

Kaojin Village.

Kids were locked inside their houses. The adults, wandering outside, held torches to make up for the absence of the sun.

"Where is Rongrong?"

"Rongrong, where are you?"

Shu Fanrong's mother, Wen Yingyu, desperately looked around nearby trees, bushes and rocks, but to no avail.

Her husband, as well as their neighbors, were trying their best to help.

Wen Yingyu deeply regretted her decision to leave Shu Fanrong alone with their next door neighbor, while she and her husband took a two-week long trip to the capital to sell the vegetables they've been growing.

Before they left, Shu Fanrong made a fuss about them leaving her forever and whatnot.

Now, it seemed as if it was the opposite!

"Ying'er, I'll go into the forest to search, okay?"

"Be careful. You know how ferocious the spirit beasts there are! Especially after the Great Order Sect was destroyed..."

The forest was part of the Great Order Sect, and its disciples periodically cleaned out the forest of the strong spirit beasts. Because of this, the hunters of Kaojin Village felt virtually no danger when they hunted for food in the forest.

After the Great Order Sect was leveled, the hunters lost their protection. Fewer and fewer hunters made it back out of the forest alive.

"Don't worry. I can handle any beast, long as it's for my child!"

Wen Yingyu watched anxiously as her husband entered the forest.
