Chapter 16: Sour Grapes...

Veru chewed the edible portion of the plumpy red fruit.

His mouth overflowed with sweetness. A sense of euphoria rushed through his veins, stimulating his tired mind, as well as the dreary body.

He rested himself on the tall tree and munched down the edible part with immense satisfaction.

Growl…..

His stomach grumbled once again. His hand patted it, as his eyes scoured the nearby land for any fallen fruits.

Unexpectedly, after eating the fruit his body was refreshed. Energy coursed through his veins, as his every feel brimmed up with energy.

He got up and scouted for the fallen fruits, and not once giving a damn to the lustrous fruits hanging over his head.

"They must be sour, " Hina had once told him the story of the fox and grapes.

Unlike others, Veru learned something important from the story.

When in spite of trying one can't achieve something, one should just forget and look for alternatives.

Neither Veru nor Hina had the privilege of wasting resources on something unachievable.

"I believe they aren't even tasty as this one," Veru repeated his words, convincing himself that those fruits were of no good.

His eyes fell on multiple fallen fruits, most of them hidden inside the nearby bushes; with the majority of them being edible, and not rotten.

He collected and brought them near the tree, where he gobbled down the fruits whole.

He ate the fruits with a sense of immense happiness, and after eating enough fell asleep, resting his head on the tree trunk peacefully.

~~~~
Hose opened his eyes, it was already dark. The sky was filled with shiny bright stars and the moon.
This black hair reflected back the serene light with sparkles.
He turned right, and then to the left.
Hina and Sanim laid unconscious next to him. He got up, dusting his clothes, and searched for the green-haired boy; Hose couldn't find Veru in spite of all his efforts.
Facing no success, he went back towards the unconscious girls and decided to wake them up.
He looked at the unconscious black-haired girl; his eyes were fixed onto her, but they shifted away when a cold gust of wind hit his back.
He looked at the white-haired girl and slapped her face a couple of times.
"Hina, wake up!"
He continued slapping until the girl opened her eyelids, revealing the deep blue eyes that had a clear reflection of the dark, yet bright sky, onto them.
"Where are we?"
Hina looked around at her surrounding as her eyes widened finding Sanim lying next to her.
She once again looked around, rolling her eyes wherever she could, but she found no sign Veru's presence.
"Where is Veru? Do you know where he is?"
She asked Hose in panic.
Hose gave her a brief shake. "No, I couldn't find him. In fact, before waking you up, I searched for him. He isn't anywhere near."
Hose pointed his finger towards the black-haired girl. "Who is she? She is Sanim, right?"
Hina glanced towards Sanim. "Yes, she is Sanim herself.l, but how did she end up here?"
"I have no clue, " Hose sighed. He looked up, "we are all alone on this island, I guess."
"There is no one here, I found not a single soul while searching. No signs of civilization either. I think this Island is deserted."
Hose hypothesized.
"I am scared." Hina laid her head onto his chest and said in an anxious tone. Tears dropped down her cheeks.
"It will be alright. I am with you." Hose caressed her long white hair, as his ears twitched hearing a faint noise.
Hose turned his face towards the source. "We should wake her up. She needs to know of her current predicament."
Hose went closer towards the girl; Hina tried to reach her hand in order to stop Hose but retreated her hand back. "Be careful."
She could so nothing more than warn him.
Hose looked at Sanim and called her out." Sanim, wake up! You need to open your eyes right now. We are trapped on this deserted island."
Hina looked at Hose with her brows raised, but along with a sliver of fear in her heart. 'I hope she doesn't hurt him.'
Hose continued until the black-haired girl opened her eyes; the red eyes glittered in the moonlight.
Sanim looked up and smiled at Hose.
"I knew, you would never leave me alone ever again."
She hugged Hose, who didn't show any movements and sat still.
"Veru will always be together with Sanim. Hehe."
Her red eyes once again closed as her head crashed down on the sandy soil.
Hose's eyes dilated and were frozen at the black-haired girl, who once again rested on the cold bed of sand, with her eyes hidden under the eyelids.
