Chapter 1: Hanako-San(The Bathroom Ghost)
Many legends are based off of toilets. Hanako-San is one of the many legends that involves a toilet. Hanako-San's legend has been changed and retold many times in the past. But no matter how many times it has changed, it's still terrifying. You may be wondering who is Hanako-San. Well, let's find out.....
Depending of what part of Japan you are in, the legend is very different. For example, to summon Hanako-San, you have to go to the third floor of your building and walk to the third stall. Then, you will have to knock on the door three times repeating the girl's name. Once you knocked three times, you will open the door and walk in. There, a little girl in a red skirt will be standing there. She will have a bob haircut. That is Hanako-San. It is still unknown why she appears. But some people say she just wants a friend to play with. Or she just wants to drag you to hell.
How Hanako-San came to be is a very sad story. In all versions of the stories. One says, Hanako-San was a victim of an air raid of WWII. It is said, while Hanako-San was in school or playing hide-and-seek, her school was bombed. Causing the death of Hanako-San. Other stories say she was murdered by her parent or a stranger. Even committed suicide in the school's bathroom.
Even though it is dangerous summoning Hanako-San, the legend is most commonly used as a challenge. Or be used as, 'test your fears'. Which commonly happens in high schools or primary schools. Hanako-San's legend has become popular all other the world. The character of Hanako-San has appeared in manga, films, anime, and video games.
Though appearing in films and mangas, Hanako-San's legend has really never have a set way to summon her. Like I said earlier, it all depends on where you are from. One version of the legend, you will have to stir the water of the toilet. A bloody hand will appear from the toilet bowl.
For many legends, there are ways to trick or defeat the ghost or spirit. Well, once you summon Hanako-San, there's no way to escape from her. But some people say that if you get the highest score of the test, she'll leave you alone. Or, if you have a partner, it increases your chances of living to tell the tell. There are some ways to avoid this spirit. Hanako-San is known to like dark and dirty bathroom stalls. So, teachers tells everyone to keep the stalls clean. So, no matter what, do not take this challenge.
