Chapter 68: 3 Quasi-Legends took action

Seeing Lireesa in silence right in front of her as if to show 'Silence is golden', Sena breathed deeply to stop her impulse to pin her friend down and rub all over as punishment. Naturally, her thought couldn't be shown lest she was no match against Lireesa, even if her bully worked at Lireesa's weakest moment.

However, who was Lireesa, now different with high mental cultivation due to her magic profession level same as her ranger. She was aware of her friend's quick minute-changing expression. To avoid consequences from Sena's losing control, Lireesa blurted out an excuse to scout around and fled the scene. Even if she was stronger, whenever she met her friends' rage, she was always powerless.

Lireesa hopped on her mount and whooshed away from the scene. Of course, Lireesa wasn't planning to glide around the battlefield before it commenced; she must give her mount full rest to ensure it was energetic and ready for any emergency when necessary. Dragonhawks weren't machines; they were living breathing creatures who spent time with their masters to grow relationships. Too much work without sufficient rest could damage their health. Work and rest should be allocated properly and it was the duty of their master.

After she scurried around the area and found the resting place, she put down her mount and fed it before letting it sleep. She also leaned down with her hands behind her head on the mount's body. Its beautiful feather despite appearing sharp and rough texture felt quite the opposite for Lireesa. She regarded it completely as a pillow and closed her eyes. Breathing in and out. Regardless of whether meditation could help her breakthrough Legend, she cherished every moment of acquiring mana from the surrounding even if her capacity was full.

At the same time, in contrast to Lireesa's surrounding vibrant atmosphere, the whole temporary camp of trolls went dull, especially when the previous commander who ordered to dig in was stared at intently by 3 level 9s. These quasi-legends were astounded when they arrived to see the tragic scenes and figured someone must be responsible. If before, they would have thrown that person away to death and served as a dish.

Now the culprit or as they assumed wasn't a common troll but a high level; even middle levels were expendable among the troll tribes, but high levels must be carefully treated. It didn't matter their ranks or levels higher than the troll in front of them whose head stared at the ground unmoved, 3 quasi-legends must still give this face and could only punish by demoting or depriving their rights.

They withheld their anger and asked the commander of the frontal element what happened earlier to describe in detail. From his report, they learned the number of enemies which wasn't too different from previous reports, and how the ambush ensued. Although they didn't want to admit, the commander in front made the right choice and reduced the casualties.

"There Sires, you must get involved in this battle. Or else, all of us are waiting to be butchered. I guarantee with my rank and my life." The commander pleaded. Three level 9s looked at each other and were embarrassed. Were they supposed to assert, even if they were involved nothing could change except for hurting some rangers? They also didn't want to be encircled by so many high-level rangers.

According to their subordinates' accounts, they already had a conjecture their enemies were led by at least one Quasi-legend. Should they also participate, elven level 9s would also come out and the whole battle became a mess. It wasn't they didn't want to break a rule, but uncontrollable situations from the elves could also threaten them. Fortunately, they still had a backhand in these situations. And they confirmed there wasn't any legend on the other side because elven only had archmages as legends and there wasn't a single mage present.

Just when one of them was going to open their mouth to assure despite all it appeared, everything would be fine, an explosion occurred within their camp.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Several explosions followed. One of the three Quasi-legends yelled at the commanders around: "What are you watching us for? Go and give'em hell. Kill these bitches."

Everyone scattered including the troll commander who was accused at the moment. Everyone only had disbelief in the elves' mindset. Wasn't this too daring? Now with troll numbers raised and their powerhouses available, shouldn't these women set up ambush ahead of their path instead of fighting head-on?

Only one troll who had survived a previous deadly attack remained unchanged. His face wasn't surprised because he noticed somehow these women fighting doctrines had changed from the old times. He just hoped the famous Ranger-General Windrunner wasn't around.

As soon as their subordinates left, the three Level 9s discussed, not worrying about Windrunners since their size had grown and everything outside returned to calmness as expected half an hour later. Afterward, the rest of their subordinates returned back, looking disarray and despondent from the elves' attack; none of them spoke a word which widen three quasi-legends' eyes.

"What happened to you all?" One of them asked, discovering their subordinates' faces not much different from the one they had scolded earlier. Bitter expressions. Perhaps silence for too long was too much; someone reported. The same scenario happened again now under their watch. Elves retreated, trolls pursued and they were ambushed again.

Maybe, they all listened to the previous disaster and chased slowly and methodically. Casualties weren't really high. Only one-fourth died and the rest who participated would be back to their peak state with their recovery perks. This couldn't go on any longer or the entire element would be stuck in a quagmire of going back and forth. They must break these women's routines quickly and plan ahead.

Boom! Boom!

Vibrations from several detonations erupted again and shook their bodies. Their mouth twitched from the elves' unusual tactics, especially the bombardment first. They had no idea why compared to the elves' thick rain of arrows during the old days. At least, gave them some respite. Please, an hour or more would do; their plan hadn't come out yet.

After Lireesa's lectures on core concepts in combat, many Windrunners realized the benefits and implemented them on the battlefield. Even if it seemed these concepts were brilliant on paper, in most of their views none of them had been tested. Now they fell in love with these tactics after discovering the chaos they had caused to the enemies. Poor trolls were the first to become their experiments.

They were simple yet effective concepts, effortless to remember. They were speed, surprise, and aggression or violence of action. At any combat stage, as long as they implemented according to these ideas, the following battle became easier.

Unaware they were treated as experiments, one of the Level 9s decided and spoke out his thoughts: "We'll gather three of us and most trolls in one concentrated attack; the rest would cover us from being flanked. As long as we cut off a portion of these bitches, we won the battle no matter the cost."

No one had a better idea than this and the clock was ticking. Everyone nodded and planned to adjust on the battlefield. A few minutes later when everyone was in position, they launched a simultaneous assault in all directions but concentrated one in the middle. 3 Quasi-Legends led this middle assault.

On the other side, Windrunners were glad to bombard the trolls sporadically with arcane burst shots and sniping arrows killing several in vulnerable positions. One of them, who appeared to be a leader noticed these trolls were regrouping and preparing for an assault. No need for her reminder, every elf's eyes saw through them and waited for the next order while still giving them raining hell arrows.

A thunderous roar followed by several roars resounded across the battlefield, stunning many Windrunners for a slight moment, and their hands paused. The battle cries went on as the trolls charged toward them and every Windrunner knew this was different from tit-and-tat before. This could be the final counter-attack from the trolls and everything was going on as they had planned.

The previous leader from the middle group was preparing to announce the combat plan's number when her eyes captured three menacing auras from the charging trolls in front of her. The entire horde seemed to have made up their mind to slaughter her group. The grounds shook from monstrous wave footsteps and pebbles moved across the terrain near the Windrunners. The leader ordered out loud.

"Plan C!"

As soon as her subordinates heard the command, everyone's eyes realized there were 3 Quasi-Legends in front of them and awaited further instructions, drawing their bowstrings.

"First volley! Release!" Floods of arrows covered the skylight and this wasn't over because just after a second.

"Second Volley! Release!"

"Third Volley! Release!"

The first wave hadn't arrived and three waves flew toward the trolls. The distance was initially 200 meters and the trolls were nearing the rangers. Soon, against the arrows' turmoil, the assault went unimpeded, but many fell on the path. Some tumbled on the soil; some covered their vital parts with weapons and luckily survived but with arrows impaled on their bodies, jeopardizing their movement. Some dropped dead limp, their vitalities gone. Some tripped over their comrades and were soon stampeded by others behind. Their figures went unrecognizable. Morales went down if not for three quasi-legends and many high-levels leading them, everyone had already retreated. These arrows were fast and accurate, reaping lives mercilessly.

After firing three waves of arrows, the leader cried out, "Concuss shots! And five volleys at your discretion!"

Soon her fellows echoed her order along the ranks and in the quickest way everyone had concuss arrows formed on their bows within two seconds while the leader immediately shot out 3 arcane shots upward in the air, observable by the rest to signal her group met three Quasi-Legends.

"Release!"

Whish! Whish! Whish!

All shots hit and slowed down the entire trolls except for the powerful one who managed to dispel the spells. Now with the rest of their subordinates being slowed down, high-levels and quasi-legends became discernable as they separated from the crowds ahead. The distance was 100 meters away from the Windrunners. Three volleys without giving the enemies the time, fired upon the trolls at the back. Being slowed down on the battlefield meant becoming practice targets for the elves and the rangers wouldn't let go of such opportunities.

The leader and some among her group focused their three volleys on the leading figures of the trolls. Quasi-legends except for some shame from eating the dirt to escape from too many arrows were undamaged while the high-level trolls were able to block and parry the arrows or escape but they were soon hit after being targeted by many elves. Separation from their subordinates had become the worst nightmare.

Three leading trolls were unwilling to give up and the distance between the rangers and them had narrowed to less than 100 meters. But their eyes widen in disbelief as they watched what happened next.

After firing five arrows at will, the Windrunner's leader ordered a retreat and everyone fell back without hesitation. It seemed they shot so many accurate arrows and hurt the trolls; instead, it was hard for the elves to severely damage the current troll's size. The concentrated assaulting group appeared to size around 6000 trolls and their numbers of arrows were nothing in front of this horde, not to mention her group only had more than 300 Windrunners. But they weren't frightened as everything was still according to the plan.

Ah!

I want to screech.

The writer felt something missing and it seemed I didn't describe to full extent what appears in my mind.
