Chapter 42: Pest
"Hm?"
Arai who had just finished breaking the barrier looked towards a rooftop with mild surprise. His cursed spirits had been wiped out almost instantly, Arai knew the strength of the bowman and he did not have nearly enough to wipe all of them out.
'An outsider? Or maybe some kind trap to kill them all.' Arai dashed towards the location while thinking of what could of happened. Although they weren't exactly strong, the cursed spirits he deployed were all about semi-second grade to second grade. The higher grades were kept within himself.
Still he made sure to deploy at least 10 of them, seeing how they were all killed instantly. The opponent either had a technique with a large radius of attack or they were simply so fast that they killed the shikigamis that fast.
Either way, his opponent through this display already showed a high amount of strength.
"Annoying." Arai muttered as he landed on the rooftop where his shikigamis had been destroyed. Their residue was still here and so was the bowman. Though none of them were alive, the bowman had been decapitated in one fell swoop and no traces of anyone else was here.
'So I was right, an outside interference was the cause of this and they are at the level of a first grade sorcerer. They also destroyed all residues of their self not leaving anything for me to know. I know most first grades so at least that will give me info. Still I can't think of anyone, maybe Jinichi since he has a grudge against me but other than that... I don't have any leads.'
Looking carefully at the corpse, he could see traces of strain on his neck and struggle.
'So he was tortured, probably to gain information.'
His brows frowned as he looked at the mess around him.
"Looks like I'll have to get rid of some pest."
Fa away from here, the hooded figure landed on a parking lot and shattered the glass of a car making the car let out an emergency siren. She quickly broke the siren making the sound and entered the car with a sigh.
'This is bigger than I had originally thought. I came here because those hooded people originally had the cursed tool and I wanted to get them to tell me where they hid it. But now I find out that that man took it from them and gave it to someone else. I could of fought him right here and there but from what that bowman told me, he should be equal to a first grade sorcerer and I don't know his technique. For now it's better to play it safe.'
She was frustrated as she couldn't get what she had come here for but risking her life was not something she could afford right now. She too wanted power, more power so that she could free 'them' from their seal. She had comrades to save but if she were to die then they'd have no way of freeing themselves.
'Soon, just wait a bit more. When the time comes, I'll free you all. I swear.'

Inside a room, Maki and Mai slept each on one of the bunk beds. Mai was sleeping peacefully as she was covered by a blanket while Maki was in an odd position, her blanket was on the floor and snored like a beast.
The duality of twins, though they may share the same DNA, their behaviors are different to one another. Maki was the more outgoing of the two which coincides with her power while Mai was the shier of the two.
At this time, Arai opened the door to their room and opened the curtains letting the light illuminate the bedroom. His eyes now covered by the glasses he usually wore.
"It's morning, time to wake up."
The light's sudden flash woke both sisters up as they grumblingly woke up. Maki in particular rubbed her eyes before glaring daggers at him as if she wanted to rip him apart.
"You better explain yourself."
Arai smiled before saying.
"Meet me at the courtyard in 2 hours. Breakfast is ready."
He left after that leaving the twins confused as to why he would want them to be there. After doing their morning routine which consisted of brushing eating their breakfast, brushing their teeth and taking a shower, they arrived in time to the courtyard. It was a wide open space with a dense brick wall that surrounded them and stone slabs under their foot. There was no lush of greenery here, it was as if a training room instead of a courtyard.
"Here on time." Arai said as he appeared behind them. In his hands were these two wooden staffs.
He walked past them and stood in the middle of the courtyard.
"Today is your first day of training. I'll be overseeing you both and teach you how to get stronger and ways to improve yourselves. This training regiment will be applied every day so you better make sure to sleep a lot. This training is to make you stronger so to do that I won't hold back and give my all to do just that. Any questions?"
Finally having the time to have her say, Maki raised her hand. "Yeah, what the fuck."
"Excuse me, language."
"You tell us to come here and all of the sudden you force us to train? I know you adopted us and all but we're just kids and you are making us go through a training regimen. If that's how you are then you're no better than those Zen'in bastards."
"You're saying that but can't you hide that smile on your face."
That was right, Maki was smiling. She had always had one goal since childhood, to get strong enough to get out of the Zen'in clan's shadow. To throw her identity as a Zen'in member out, though she had partially achieved that since she was now officially not a member. But she knew that even if they disowned her, if she wanted to become a sorcerer, then they'd keep harassing her with their authority.
To prove to herself and everyone that she had surpassed the Zen'in clan.
She would need to become a notable sorcerer.
And what better way than to have a grade 1 sorcerer teach you.
