Chapter 27: The Ruler of the Underworld Will Be There
Ken didn't expect Shirley to be home at this time. His head turned sideways towards the familiar voice by the staircase. Standing up, he smiled and greeted her. "Shirley, it's been a while. I'm here to see your father and talk about business."
"Ah! Hehe, am I interrupting your conversation then? If yes, then I can excuse myself." Shirley had a good impression of him since he was the one who informed her family about Bryan Gu's threat.
"No, we're almost done already. No need for you to purposely avoid our talk. Besides, this is your home. We have no secrets in our family." Anthony answered and patted the seat to his right, indicating for her to take a seat.
Satisfied with her father's response in front of an outsider, she quickly made her way to the couch. Although Ken had given them insider news, she still wanted to let him know how superior she was in the Han family. Since young, her father has fulfilled all her wishes and spoiled her dearly. As long as it made her happy, he would do anything for her.
With the Han family status, she could get married to any wealthy family she liked. Although she had many choices, she only had her eyes on Peter Sin. Therefore, she would use whatever it takes to make him her man. Her first step was to get closer to his family.
From working with Katrina to destroying Peter's trust in Selina, Shirley had calculated every single step she took. That day, she purposely gave every staff half a day off after exiting from Peter's office. She knew Peter's temper and was not going to let any employee ruin their fight.
The moment she went into Peter's office to tell him about Selina being the traitor, everyone had already left the building. That's why she was the one who contacted Selina and not anyone else. By job title, she was his personal assistant. In private, she was his childhood friend. Either way, her contacting Selina would be considered reasonable in others' eyes.
After leaving the office, she didn't leave immediately. She went to the security control room and munched her snacks while waiting for Selina to get out of the office. Once she saw Selina's injured chest, a loud baleful laugh sounded the room.
Not long after the cameras caught Selina's car leaving the parking lot, she dialed Katrina's number to talk about the incident. Knowing Selina's nature, she would definitely head straight home to her mother. The conversation was staged for her to hear.
Finally, she has waited for Selina to die! Even if jumping into the water didn't kill her, the people she sent to look for her would have ended her life. Who would have known Bryan Gu would come looking for trouble after her death? Since he wants to play, she will entertain him.
"Uncle Ken, thank you for your advice last time. If you didn't inform us about Bryan Gu wanting to kidnap me, I might be in serious danger. But aren't you afraid of Bryan finding out that you're telling us all this?" Shirley smiled innocently at him, but only she would understand the deeper meaning behind this question.
"Even though the Sin family has been close to the Gu's, I have to do the right thing. He always blamed Selina's death on Peter and Shirley. From what I know, Selina probably had some problems herself to begin with. Now, her brother is running around while going nuts about getting revenge. Of course, I will have to let you guys know about his plan." Ken twisted many facts around to suppress her worries.
Shirley elbowed her dad a few times, making him put down his coffee. Glancing at his daughter's expression, he could tell what she wanted him to mention. Sighing inwardly, Anthony faced Ken and joined the conversation.
"Speaking of Peter, how is he doing? To be honest, nobody should be forced to take any responsibility for Selina Gu's death. She suicided. It's not like we pushed her off the bridge. Also, even if she was alive and living well, she was just leeching off your family fortune."
He left a small pause between his words to see how Ken was reacting to them before continuing. Since Ken didn't show any signs of disturbance, Anthony carried on with the talk. "I've never liked the Gu family. By family status and appearance, our Han family matches Peter more. What do you think? Comparing our Shirley with that Selina."
Stretching his arms sideways, his hands gave Shirley's shoulders a squeeze. His words couldn't get any more obvious. They wanted to set Peter up with Shirley!
As a business man, how could Ken not see their wagging tails? Unfortunately, Peter is the one with the final say in this because it is his marriage. He and Fanny have previously promised Peter that they will let him choose his own wife. If he agrees to anything right now, then it'll be breaking the promise he made to Peter.
"Ah, youngsters these days always put the word love at the corner of their mouths. Shirley has known him since they were kids. If they like each other and want to get married, then my wife and I would not have any objections." Ken's words were meant for Shirley to hear. It was obvious how much she had loved Peter, but Peter never noticed it.
"Ken, kids don't know the best for themselves. As parents, we should be the ones deciding their future. You only want him to be well. I heard your company wasn't going that well. If you need any finance investments, I could consider it. But I will only work with people I am close with or have relations to. If you run into any trouble, do let us know."
Ken smiled awkwardly, "Yes, I'll keep that in mind. If there's nothing else, then I will head home. It's getting a bit late and my wife is waiting for me."
"Alright. Let's have dinner together next time. I haven't seen Peter for a while." Anthony said he walked Ken to the door.
Smiling, Ken nodded. "See you and your family next time."
After Ken drove out of their driveway, Shirley crossed her arms and stomped her feet. "How could he say that? I'm obviously a better match, yet he tossed the ball to Peter! He knows Peter wouldn't agree since he treats me like his best friend!"
Tracy rubbed Shirley's back to sooth her anger. "He will realize it sooner or later. Besides, didn't your father just give him the most obvious hint? If he wants our help with anything, we will only do it if our relationship is close enough. We can force them to agree to the marriage. You'll be Peter's bride."
Hearing his daughter's voice all the way from the entrance, Anthony cleared his throat. "Shirley, why don't you reconsider your decision? Maybe you'll find other guys more pleasing than Peter. With our family status, you could get a better man from other families, but you never gave anyone a glance."
"Dad!! I only want Peter. I've known him since young. I've seen him as my groom since the time our families joked about us playing the marriage couple game! I won't let a dead girl ruin the chance that's been mine!" She gritted her teeth and clenched her fists from anger.
Anthony took an invitation letter from the counter and handed it to her. "If you really want him to be your husband, I won't have much objection. But at least attend this party tomorrow night. Maybe it'll change your mind. I heard the ruler of the underworld would join. He always kept a low-profile, but someone spread the word saying he would join this event."
"What does this have to do with me?" Shirley stared at the invitation and wanted to feed it to the shredder.
"Think about it. If you could catch the ruler of the underworld's attention, then wouldn't Peter have a worthy rival to start caring for you? Anyways, he is the connection to all sources for business. If you could become friends with him, we could get some benefits at the same time and expand our business without any worries." Anthony tried persuading her.
After thinking about his words for a minute or two, Selina took the invitation and smiled. "You're right. Peter might start valuing me more if he sees other competition around me. I've always been single and never told him about any pursuers. Maybe he will start looking at me more if I go. I know he is going to this party too!"
"That's right. Now, take this new black card I opened for you and go shop for new gowns." Anthony placed the card in her hands and signaled his wife to go out with her.
"Shirley, how about mommy go with you? It's been a while since we've gone shopping together! It'll be fun." Tracy hugged her daughter's arm and dragged her out of the house.
"Yes! Thank you daddy! Mommy can give me honest opinions about the gowns later! Hehehe." As soon as the mother and daughter pair left the house, Anthony sighed and dialed a private number.
"Hello? Yes, I've given the card to her. You can track her down and protect her. I will proceed with the plan on Bryan Gu."
