Chapter 3: Chapter 3 - Food

KALLEA

I woke up in a terrible headache. My heart was pounding so loud. I could hear a faint flow of liquid somewhere near me. No matter how hard I try to ignore it, I keep on hearing it like it was at the back of my ear.

I don't know if I'm going crazy or something but I know it's not normal.

Since I came home, I've been surviving on a glass of water and little intake of bread. It's the only thing I could bear eating. Other food tastes horrible and the more I take it, the more horrible it tastes. I was given a soup by my land lady yesterday as a welcome gift and to congratulate my fast recovery. And I swear it tasted like spoiled water in sewage.

The bread was like a sponge but in a rougher texture. It's kind of bearable for someone like me who haven't tasted or eaten anything good.

I've noticed changes on my body, too. I think I got thinner and paler. At first, I thought my clothes were just unusually big but it was my body that got smaller.

I'm no longer wearing my glasses, too. Everything was strangely clear and vibrant. I never know that the colour red is so vibrant until I saw a wounded person on a drama airing on TV.

"I'm so… hungry…" I whispered, curling at my bed.

It was raining at the middle of the night. I could hear the drops of rain loud and clear even though the windows were closed tight. Sometimes I would try to cover my ears with pillows or by hand but the sound only got stronger.

"Why… is it… itchy…?"

My throat was itching so much that I started clawing my neck. I felt a stinging pain as I continued scratching it. Suddenly, there was a thick liquid oozing from my neck. I sat upright, ignoring the throbbing pain in my head. I tried to stand but my legs were too weak and wobbly.

After three attempts, I finally stood up, one hand at my dripping neck. My room was dark but the faint lightning seeping through the windows became my guide. I was walking carefully and slowly until I reached my desk.

"Where is… it?" I was looking for a mirror but I could not find it.

Three knocks. My attention was diverted to the person knocking at my door. Who is it?

I was so focus about it that could not remember if I even walked to reach it. When I looked around I was already standing meters away from my door, hands still at my dripping neck.

"Kallea? Are you in there?"

I was startled when the person behind the door spoke once more in louder voice. I sighed in relief when I realize it was the land lady.

"I brou— Oh my! Are you alright? Where did that wound came from?" She exclaimed as soon as she sees me.

Wound? I slowly removed my hand at my neck and through the flashlight she's holding, I saw a glimpse of a vibrant red liquid, still flowing from my palm.

It was… beautiful…

The colour… I like it…

What is this feeling?

The landlady grabbed my hand and tried to wipe the blood off. She used the bottom of her shirt to clean it. I tried to take my hand back from her but her gripped was too tight at my wrist. I was writhing from her grasped but she won't let my hand go.

Using my other hand, I pushed her lightly away from me. When she did not budge, I tried using much force. My eyes widened in horror when she flew away like paper and hit the hallway. Her body hit the wall hard, creating a loud thud before she fell flat on the floor. She loses consciousness immediately.

"What's going… on? Am I… in a dream?" I pinched the side of my cheeks hard enough that I could feel my own nails digging. I bit my lip as pain shot from it.

My nose began no scrunch. I could smell something that heightened my senses to an extent. It was my first time to smell something so pleasant. I could smell something 'delicious' around me. I was breathing heavily, looking around, my head moving everywhere to find it.

As it thundered, my eyes landed at the huge cracked wall in the hallway. There was a thick red liquid dripping with a very pleasant smell. It was the aroma I've been attracted to. I walked closer and closer at it.

My lips were shaking in excitement from a faint view of it. My gums were itching, teeth drench in saliva. My senses were at peak that I could not contain the feeling anymore. My stomach rumbled, walls were scratching at each other.

In my mouth, I could feel something sharp growing from the side of my gums. I ignored the weird sensation it brought to my body. My mind was focused at the savoury thick liquid oozing from the cracked wall.

Feet away from it, suddenly, all my senses were shut and went numb. I backed away and realized that it was not just a thick red fluid but it was actually the landlady's blood when I pushed her. I began to panic. My eyes dropped on the woman lying at the floor. Blood was oozing from the back of her head.

Seeing it made me want to rip her head; separating it from her body to see a fountain of blood.

"I… I have to get out… of here…"

I could not breathe well. Before my senses could take over once more, I ran away. I was running fast at the narrow hallway, creating creaks and thud from wooden floor. I was moving fast that everything at my side were blurry.

I reached the bottom floor in no time. Even floors below, I could still smell her blood's scent. I need to be meters away. No, kilometers away or maybe even further. I had to leave this area immediately.

My feet began to move. I run through the rain, slipping at streets and turning at corners when I see one. I continued running until I was soaked and could not see the road clear. I was running until my legs had gone numb and almost gave out.

I stood in the middle of a road I never know. My mind was beginning to spin. My stomach was rumbling even louder, searching for food to digest.

I'm hungry.

I need food.

I need something in my mouth.

When I turned around, I saw a person walking casually despite of the heavy rain. I could see something glinting at his hands but I could not care less anymore. I want something. I need something. I could no longer control myself further.

I'm at my limit.

In few strides, I reached him. As I pulled his neck closer to me, my eyes saw a familiar pair of blue eyes.

At that moment, all I could see is a deep shade of red, taking over at my eyes.
