Chapter 27: She's back

Slowly, her eyelids went up and her vision cleared. For some minutes, she stared at her ceiling.

With a sigh, Kara stood up. She felt emotionally drained as she walked towards the mirror in her room. Her hair was white except for a few patched of black.

A letter was on the vanity. Kara held her breath as she stared at the familiar writing in blood. After a few minutes, she shuddered and went into her bathroom.

She loved the feeling of hot water running on her skin. It was one of the luxuries the orphanage had surprisingly been able to afford. She steadied her breathing and concentrated, trying to see if she could freeze the water. She couldn't.

Kara dragged herself out of the room, after having freshened up, with purpose. She had things she needed to do but first, she needed to get to the school clinic. Her beanie was back on her head, it made her feel better in a way.

Luckily for her, she met no one she knew on her way. She was sure Dimitri would give her hell for missing class, especially this close to exams, when he got back. But really, she had better things to do than school. What did supernaturals do after school anyway? Become doctors? She could get they called them healers and only people with specific abilities, like maybe water, could be one. But that wouldn't make sense right, considering all of them needed a healer. Oh well.

Kara pushed the door open and went in. The beds were empty and the curtains pulled aside, except for one.

"What do you want?" Mara glared at her with wary.

Kara pulled a chair and sat beside her, levelling her with a look.

"Our names are similar. In another world, we might have been best buds." She said, softening her voice.

"Do you have a screw loose or something?"

Kara smiled and waved her hand. "Humans call it personality disorder. When another personality shows up during a period of trauma and keeps showing up when needed."

It wasn't exactly a lie. Mara was smart, that she knew. She needed her to believe, it would give Kara a little more time.

"And this other personality has another power? One that no one in the other realms have?"

"Cool isn't it." Kara smirked and leaned closer. "I have someone who can make a threat drop dead with a snap of my finger."

Again, not entirelt a lie.

Mara eyed her with wary but she was intrigued. Kara looked around and scooted closer.

"Wanna see something cooler?" Her eyes sparked with mischief. "I can do this. Not well enough but it's something."

She opened her palm and ice formed. They could hear little bzzts coming from it. Mara reached out to touch it and flinched when it pricked her. Kara laughed.

"Sorry." She said and the other girl joined her.

They stared at each other when they stopped. The wary was back in Mara's eyes.

"Does Liv know?" She asked.

"Yes... Dimitri, Klaus, Adrian, Regi, Destiny and our very own dear principal Hartridge. Apparently they knew before me." Kara answered, watching her every move.

Friend or foe. Hera laying in her own blood in her white wedding dress popped in her head.

Mara scoffed. She figured. "Why are you telling me? We are not friends."

Kara let the question hang in the air a bit. Why?

"I want to be the writer of my own story. It always seems as though they all know something I don't. Everyone I know carries a bit of suspicion around that I can't place my finger on, they know more about me than I know and than they are willing to tell me." She told her thoughtfully.

"That doesn't answer my question."

Kara studied her. The wolf girl with brown hair, small lips, brown eyes and a figure similar to hers. But they didn't look alike. No matter how much she tried to act badass, Mara reminded her of a delicate flower.

"Lucas Cahill."

Mara froze. "What?"

"Your father. A secret for a secret Mara."

Kara had dulled her voice to a lulling tone. Having lived as Hera in her dreams, she could pretend to be her any time any day. She knew how enchanting the tone was, how it had a way of pulling the listener in.

"He is not my father."

Kara frowned. That was unexpected.

"A secret for a secret. You are the only one who doesn't exactly treat me like a pity party." Mara laughed.

Kara's frown deepened. "No one treats..."

"Oh please, you barely notice anything. Everyone feels pity because I'm the daughter of the obsessed alpha's brother. I was neglected and forgotten. Poor me." She scoffed and brushed her hair behind her ear. "A secret for a secret?"

Kara nodded.

"Topazae isn't the only place with wolves. There are free spirits. Wolves that change environment depending on the season but they like to call themselves free spirits. They have an alpha of their own but no one pays mind to them. As long as they do not cause trouble, everyone just ignores them. My mother was born a free spirit. She apparently wandered away from her pack, got kidnapped and raped by rogues then ended up being rescued by Lucas Cahill. He wedded her to give her child a name as per her request and she died a yeae after giving birth. He lets me use his name." Mara shrugged and sighed. "He told me upfront that he wasn't my dad but he is pretty chilled. He makes sure I'm not lacking anything."

"Except a father's love?"

Mara laughed. "I don't need bed time stories and kisses on the forehead. I can survive on my own, I think that is enough."

Kara placed her hand on the brown haired's. She wanted to know more about Lucas Cahill but not yet, she needed a steady foundation with Mara.

"I'm sorry for being a bitch all this time." Mara smiled sheepishly.

Kara squeezed her hand with a laugh. "You attacked me on what... my first day? What did I ever do to you?"

"I needed to see what you were made of and what Klaus was obsessed about." Mara laughed.

Kara smiled. "I promise you, I'm not Lucas'. I'm not taking him from you."

A look of shock was written on Mara's face.

"For someone with a slightly bad reputation, Lucas seems decent when it comes to you. At least from what you just said." Kara continued, trying to downplay what she had said.

Mara  sighed and leaned into her bed.

"Lucas has always been misunderstood. In my opinion, he makes the perfect alpha. Alonzo is just..."

Just what?

Both their ears twitched and Houston walked in.

"What is she doing here?" He said, venom laced in his voice.

Kara chuckled and stood up. "That is my cue to leave."

She placed her palm on Mara's before turning away.

"See you later free spirit."

Mara chuckled and shrugged at Houston's puzzled expression.

Kara played what her next move should be in her head but she came up blank. She sighed. What would Hera do?

"Ditched my class again." Frederick's angry voice jolted her to the present.

She halted in front of him with a sheepish smile.

"Ditch? Me? No..."

"Field. 20 round." He said and turned away.

Kara froze before hurrying after him. "That field is massive."

"I suggest you get started now."
