Chapter 38: Learning About Surprises

Finally. After going through the trouble of finding Nyle I was going to get some information out of him.

He was about to open his mouth and start talking when the door to the room slammed open.

Bang!

A group of men in black came in. They were wearing black masks that covered half their face and some of them had weapons like spears and staffs in their hands.

Immediately Nyle's head swerved towards their direction to look at the source of the chaos.

'Sh*t'

He then proceeded to snap his fingers and suddenly he was gone.

'Hands in the air!' Nyle was gone and I froze up. What the hell was going on?

'I apologize for the confusion Elaine,' the king said to me.

It turned out that the group of men that barged into the room was a group of spies the king formed to find more information of the flood. Looks like he had the same idea as me and wanted to have a word with Nyle, the person who supposedly had more information of the flood.

I let out a big sigh. I was just about to get information out of Nyle and was disturbed.

The king felt really bad about it and apologized to me multiple times already and I already forgave him.

But now we were empty on information sitting disappointedly in one of the palace living rooms.

'So, what do we do now?' I looked at the king still feeling down from the situation.

'You could try to meet with Nyle again.'

'That's if he ever wants to talk to me again, he probably thinks I want to capture him or something.'

'Wel-'

The door to the room banged opened suddenly. What's up with that happening so many times today?

The person who dared to barge in the room where the king was in was apparently Alex. Figures.

'What did you do?', he directed at me. I don't know what he heard, but I was not at fault here.

He then bowed to the king who stood up when Alex entered the room. The king was looking very angry, I guess he wasn't used to people entering unannounced.

'Forgive me for barging in, your majesty. Whatever Elaine has done please forgive her.' What's this? He is actually speaking up for me? Not that I need it but it sure is a different look on him to help me.

Of course this doesn't mean that I'll suddenly see him in a new light, for all I know he probably has a reason for doing this and is not doing it out of the kindness of his heart. Perhaps he thinks if I did something wrong he will be in trouble as well since I am his fiancé.

I kept quiet and watched the scene in front of me.

'Actually I was in the wrong this time, thankfully Lady Elaine has kindly forgiven me for my rash behavior. Now what gave you the courage to barge in on me unannounced?' The king's face changed from a kind looking old man to a furious face.

Alex then began to sweat. It's no surprise to say that I was enjoying the scene unraveling before me.

Hmm.... Should I help him out? I certainly don't owe him any favors, but I do feel pity for him since he did want to help me out of trouble.

'Perhaps you can go easy on him, your majesty. He is still a young boy after all.'

'But you are as young as him yet you know how to act, what excuse does he have?' Maybe this was the king's way to give me some face in front of Alex. He has after all embarrassed me enough that almost the whole kingdom knows me as the sad girl who is hopelessly in love with the crown prince.

Just remembering about it makes my head spin.

'I guess you are right,' I started to giggle a little, 'How do you plan to punish him then?'

Alex now wasn't just sweating, but the look on his face was horrified as he should be. This will certainly take him down a peg.

'Forgive me, your majesty!' Alex then kneeled in front of the king.

This feels great! The high and mighty Alex is kneeling in front of me, well not me, but he's still kneeling!

I guess I had a happy look on my face that the king smiled a little as well. I have to thank him later for letting me get a little revenge on Alex.

'Very well, you may rise.' Alex slowly got up on his feet and bowed slightly to thank the king.

'Since I have you two here, perhaps we can talk about your engagement?'

'What's there to talk about?', I said curious to where the king was going with this.

It reminded me that I had written a letter to the king about dissolving my engagement with Alex. Was he really going to let that happen?

But then the country will be run by Alex and Anastasia and will fall to ruin once again. Though we still don't know for sure whether that future was because of those two or if there were other forces at play.

Still I will not be engaged to Alex anymore so that's a plus.

'Well I was thinking of dissolving the engagement.' I let out a breath that I didn't know I was holding. So it really was about dissolving the engagement.

'What?! Why?', Alex screamed. Why was he so surprised?

I thought this would be great news for him as well seeing as how he despises me so much.

He then coughed behind his fist and said, 'What I meant was, is there a reason why we should cancel the engagement?'

The king then continued, 'Well seeing as you two are against this marriage I thought it would be best, don't you think Sir Alex?'

Alex then looked at me flustered. Maybe he still thought that I was in love with him, but through this entire conversation I did not show the slightest bit of interest in stopping the king from dissolving the engagement.

'But I thought....', Alex mumbled while looking at me.

'I don't agree we should dissolve the engagement.'
