Chapter 1: Vengeance and thunder

New legend of Sango (Vengeance and Thunder )

Episode one - (Red letter day)

I'm already in the bathroom brushing when the alarm goes off. I stare at myself in the mirror and all I see is a strong willed lady. The past four years has been the best in my life, I graduated from the university of Lagos, bagged a degree in Radiography and recently got a new job at a reputable hospital.

Kelvin stood on the door mat waiting for me, refusing to move reminds me that something is missing. I look around the sitting room to find the TV on. My cat has always been the best in reminding me about little things I forget. Last week he place my toothbrush into my bag as we're about to leave, reminding me to brush. I would have lost my flight weeks ago if he hadn't put it into my bag. Kelvin is such a blessing.

"Meown!!!"

Kelvin's voice jolts me out of the way narrowly preventing me from an incoming motorbike.

"Sheygiyah," the rider says as I remain seated on the ground.

Lucky for me, I'm not hurt, thanks to my lovely cat.

"I'm fine," I say to kelvin who keeps licking my face, As soon as I raise my face, I sight a short teenage girl, probably sixteen who's about to cross the busy road, my eyes also meet a car, approaching with lots of speed. With my calculations, an accident is about to happen.

The driver keeps honking but it seem like the girl isn't listening. Her ears are blocked with earpods and the car brakes isn't working.

Quickly, I get on my feet and snap my finger as the car move closer. The girl suddenly stops and I roll my finger, controlling the tyres to move anticlockwise. A loud screeching sound, sudden smoke and finally the car comes to a halt, just a few inch away from the girl who's dying of shock. I guess she's seeing nothing but death at the moment.

It's been years since I used my Telekinesis ability, and I can't believe it'll still work.

Every passerby begins to insult and the driver while some people threaten to burn down his car if he had collided with the girl. In as much as we want to blame the driver, let's not forget the earpods blocking the girl's hearing.

"Take off one of that thing on your ear or you won't be lucky, the effect of music is temporary but the effect of a broken bone is permanent." I warned the girl and she takes off her earpods.

Kelvin stares at me and I feel guilty for breaking my promise. "Using my powers aren't intentional," I explain as we head to the nearby BRT bus stop.

"Meown,"

"Yes, I know, but this is different."

"Meown"

"The last time, I only did it cuz we ran out of gas and the food is almost ready."

"Meown, meown, meown, meown"

I pause and turn to Kelvin, I exhale slowly and raise up my left hand as a sign of promise, "Ok, Kev. No more telekinesis, no more fire, no more thunder, no more teleporation...I Patricia Johnson will always abide by the no powers rule.

Kelvin nods and throw himself at me. I laugh as I carry him into the bus. This cat is such a blessing.

****************

Kelvin meown different with his back arched and his hairs erecting. I turn to look at the person beside me and I sigh in distress of what is about to happen. The young man beside me with his dog laying on his lap grinning angrily at Kelvin who's ready to tear him apart.

The man rubs the hairs of his pet. "Jane, relax he's not an enemy."

His white hairy dog suddenly goes silent and looks away. Kelvin turns to me and stares at me angrily for sitting beside a dog owner.

"Cat and dog, enemies of themselves."

I smile, "Yes, my cat is uncomfortable with dogs." I say stroking kelvin's multicolored hair.

"What's her name?" He asks.

"Kelvin."

"Nice name for a cat."

We sit in silence for a while as I keep staring at him. His brown skin and long ponytail makes me wonder if he's foreign.

"Photographer, Hun?" I bring up a conversation, pointing at the camera in his bag.

He smiles, "No, Archeologist."

My eyes widens in excitement as he pulls out his laptop and show me pictures of ancient Egypt sculpture including the interior parts of the pyramid.

"What's this?" I ask pointing at a hawk man sculpture.

"That's Amu Ra, Egypt sun God."

I scroll down the endless photos of different ancient images. Finally, someone who loves what I love.

"Who's your favorite god?" I ask.

"Zeuz?" He says, fondling his dog who's already fast asleep.

"Which African goddess do you fancy the most?" I ask.

He scoffs and stares at me then he looks at his sleeping dog. "Oya, Sango's spouse."

My heart raised as he mentioned the word 'oya', Kelvin looks at me with his eyes widen.

"What do you like about her?" I ask curiously.

"Her pure heartedness, leadership quality, intelligence, loyalty to her husband and most importantly, beauty."

A wide smile forms on my face as he speaks, if only he has any idea who he's speaking with.

"Here's a painting of her." He shows me a picture on his tablet.

I smile on sighting the lady's blue eyes, same as mine anytime I use my powers, "That's beautiful," I say. "What do you think about Sango" I ask.

He frowns, "That power hungry tyrant and his blood thirsty axe. I'm glad he's not alive today, imagine a world with such a inhuman leader."

His voice seem harsh like someone who's father has been beheaded by Sango.

We discuss and sometime I laugh at his funny archeology adventure, the good and the bad side of his job. I wish I had such an interesting job, unlike radiography where you'll be stuck in a room taking photos of bones and cancer cells.

The bus suddenly comes to a halt and he stands up.

"It's nice meeting you," he says with his bag on his shoulder and his dog sleeping on his arms.

I watch him leave without saying a word, as soon as he steps out, I watch him board a taxi. The thoughts of not seeing him again makes me regret not having his number, I hope we meet again...soon.

********

After work, I head home with my cat. Kelvin rush in as soon as I open the door to my apartment. With my cat laying on the couch, I head straight to the kitchen to prepare dinner.

I place a pot of water on the gas cooker. As I rinse the rice, I notice the fire gradually disappearing.

"oh gosh, I'm running out of gas."

After few seconds, the fire suddenly goes off. I look around placing the bowl of raw rice aside. For a moment, I try to recall the last time I refill the gas cylinder, it's just two weeks ago, it should last up to a month, why now.

The first idea that comes to my mind seem perfect but illogical, why should I use my powers? Instead I should call the gas station and request for a refill. It's not economical and time saving but I promised Kelvin I won't use my powers anymore.

If I want to be Patricia, I need to ignore the Oya in me and do things like a normal person would.

I pick up my phone and put a call through the gas station, It'll take thirty minutes before the whole process is done. I made a quick transfer and walk out of the kitchen with my phone.

********

Meanwhile.

Two men in a van parked outside Patricia's home watch the whole footage in their laptop screen.

"I'm not sure she has any abilities?" The one at the driver seat says, "There's no way she wouldn't use her powers if she had one," he adds.

"I guess you saw the footage boss showed us this morning," the man on the passenger seat says.

"She has telekinesis powers but I'm not sure there's flame in her."

"Until we know who she really is...we still have to keep close tabs on her to know more of her abilities."

The man at the driver seat toss the laptop to the backseat, and start the engine before driving off.
