Chapter 2: Three Toes and a Fall

'Hahaha! No. No, definitely not.'

'I couldn't have reincarnated as a bird. I must have gone crazy from inhaling all of that smoke from the fire. Reincarnation? No way.'

'There's probably a bird somewhere in this dark room that's coincidentally lining its chirps up with my thoughts.'

'...and it's probably just another coincidence that the cage I was kept in was as fragile as an eggshell. They probably didn't think a disabled person like me who has no arms would be able to break it.'

'And it's probably just a really big coincidence that some thick liquid was filling up the cage I was in. My kidnappers are probably just some perverts who like to see young girls drenched in liquid...'

I sweated a little at the thought, 'If they are such people, then I'm in a really dangerous situation. I need to get out of here as soon as possible.'

'Well, at least I'm not a bird.'

Yeah, of course.

'Bird? Bird, me not! Hahaha!!'

Okay, maybe I was going just a bit insane.

In all seriousness, if I was kidnapped by such perverts, I should probably get out of here and escape while I still can.

It then dawned on me how dire my position was. 'I can't be standing here and joking around. I need to get out of here as soon as possible.'

I started scrambling around to find a way out of here, because there must be some exit, right?

'Cold, cold, cold... why is it so cold? Am I naked or something? It doesn't feel like I have any clothes on... these perverts – even so daring as to strip the clothes of such a fair young maiden such as myself. All the more reason why I need to get out of here.'

'Ugh, damn! This is so frustrating. I can't see anything.'

Couldn't my kidnappers have been more considerate of my situation and kept the room lights on before they left?

After I took my first step out of my "cage", I felt all the blood draining out of my face.

'Ah, what?'

I could only feel three toes on both of my feet.

'D...-Did she really sell me off to some organ traffickers? Have they already taken four of my toes? Oh god. Oh my god!' I was scrambling around, 'So then, they were preserving my body with some suspicious liquid so that they could reap a few more of my limbs or organs?!'

I felt like I was connecting all of the dots.

'Wait if that's so, then doesn't that mean– ah–' I suddenly tripped on something which made a quiet thump. I expected myself to face-plant into the floor beneath me after I failed to catch myself, but I didn't. Instead of falling on some cold, hard, floor, I fell on nothing. That's right. Nothing.

Right now? I was currently free-falling through the air while bawling my eyes out.

'Holy shit, holy shit! Why am I falling?! Where did my kidnappers even take me?!' I was flailing my arms and legs around in the chilly air, trying to find something to grab. My intuition told me this would be a long fall, and I wouldn't ignore this bad feeling.

Wait, I was flailing my arms, but I didn't have any, 'Oh, whatever. Irrelevant thoughts should stay out of my head. My only focus right now should be survival. I didn't know how far this fall was, but I'm sure I'm past the point where I'd get a hundred-percent guarantee of death once I hit the floor... and once I get to that point... I'll splat on it, just like a pancake!'

I wept in my heart, 'Oh, I'd love some of the mother's pancakes right now.'

That's when I hit the ground.

But the solid surface that I was expecting to fall and die on turned out to be a raging path of gushing water. Before I had time to react the water consumed and engulfed my entire being.

I lost consciousness.

'Cold. It's so cold.'

...

Tiny, white ice crystals descended from the cloudy sky.

Some perched on the leaves of trees and bushes while others decorated the ground.

This secluded forest of few animals was all a majestic and blinding white.

At this time of year, beasts lay dormant in their caves, bugs inactive in their little habitats... but there was not a single human to be seen. The forest was quiet and peaceful.

The serenity broke from a small rustle in a bush adorned in a coat of snow, which fell off after the movement inside.

Two long ears poked out from behind the bush, and a black rabbit popped out from its hiding spot. Despite its petite size and fluffy body, it was anything but cute. With its glowing red eyes and protruding razor-sharp teeth, it looked nothing like a friendly little bunny. The black rabbit struck a great contrast to the mythical snow forest.

Hot, wet saliva dripped down from between the gaps of its panting mouth. Each drop that fell melted the snow. Its red eyes shone with hunger—hunger for meat.

This demonic-like rabbit was on the hunt for its next prey.

...And it was craving some bird.

Wait, soo... did she reincarnate or not?

+

The rabbit is being suspicious !!

Let's hope our black rabbit antagonist is merciful enough to not target our cute little reincarnated(??) main character.
