Chapter 5: The Next Day

The night was long and sleepless for Davis. He squeezed himself with his fellow rule violators on the cold floor up to daybreak. He knew that he was not prepared for this day and was wondering when the nightmares would end. Davis was anxious about the court session ahead of him.

"Davis Rodrick." A police officer called out for him. He knew that it was time. Time to go plead his case to an unknown god of the law. He was scared. This was a fact everybody was aware of. He stood at the metal barred door and waited still as the officer opened it slowly as if he wasn't aware of the tension.

"You must have friends that care about you boy." The officer let him out in style. Wait a minute. Not going to court or what did the officer mean. "What do you mean sir?" Davis was confused about his statement. He was 100% sure that he had no friends in the country. Or maybe his previous assumption was right.

Could his friends have been here and they called back to find out who had contacted them and maybe came to his rescue before he was faced with his newly found doom? He didn't know what to think. He was enthusiastic but confused. He opted to see Jack or Ryan. That would have been a surprise indeed.

"Someone came to help you out. Let's go, you are no longer needed in here." The officer directed him to his belt and led him out of the station. There it was, the surprise of the day.

Not knowing what to say he uttered in a soft voice "What are you doing here?"

"I just came to help you out cause I know that this is not the help you need." Lizzy responded in a manner to suggest that she didn't call the police on him.

"I thought you called the police." He didn't sound happy.

"No, I didn't. It was my neighbors. When they heard the commotion they called the cops. I came and dropped any charges against you and said we were friends and just had a simple argument." She sounded remorseful. "I hope they didn't mistreat you." she felt concerned.

"That means we are cool?" Davis inquired from her to understand his current position in her life.

"Yes, but you need to see a doctor. Last night you sounded pretty nuts. You need help, Davis." She talked to him while holding his hand.

"Does that mean that I can stay?" He was nervous about this answer.

"I am sorry but that hasn't changed. I am heading to work." Lizzy was leaving.

"Ow, okay cool. I'll figure something out." Disappointment was evident in both his tone and body language.

"Go see a psychiatrist, Davis. I mean it." She was almost shouting because of the distance between them.

"Yeah, right." He spoke in a lot of sarcasm as he went in the opposite direction.

He didn't even know the part of the country that he was in. He didn't know where to go or what to do. He didn't know where to begin or how he would get home from here. He didn't even know the bearing of his home from the country he was in. There were a lot of questions left unanswered in his mind.

He decided to walk around the city of Tenei, admiring technology and the beauty in it. He kept on thinking and trying to find dots to join. He was lucky that it was just morning and he had the entire day to think about where he will spend the night. The problem was his growling stomach.

He had no money on him so all he could do was choose to ignore the hunger. He walked and walked and walked. The city became normal scenery for him. He was no longer amazed by the new things he saw. The hunger he had been feeling had become too serious to be ignored.

The scorching sun had no mercy on him. It lit as if someone forgot to regulate it. Like the A/C was broken or something. Davis was sweaty all over. He was just walking with no hope or expectation. He was drowned in thought and didn't know what to do. It was going to get dark pretty soon.

"You seem to have a liking for me or we should stop meeting in Tenei like this." The little teen was around again. Davis wasn't sure to be happy but he was. "I am Diaz. You are?" She stretched forth her hand as she stood on her bike.

"Are you always following me?" Davis was curious.

"Me? No, no. You keep popping up wherever I am." She looked at him and giggled sarcastically.

"Okay, okay. I'll give you that." Davis continued walking. He had never been interested in maintaining conversations with anyone in the City. He was very tired. It looked like he was struggling to raise his feet off the ground.

"What are you up to and what is it about you not telling me your name." Diaz was persistent.

"Must I tell you my name? How does that help me?" Davis pretended but he knew he needed company, or else he would find himself running mad with all the thoughts in his head. He wanted it to go on.

"Oww. You seem to have forgotten that I was there to help get you to the old man's store. Besides, does it hurt to have a friend? Now that you keep bumping onto me we might as well be friends, right?" She seemed bent towards making friends with him. Almost like she was lonely.

They chatted a little more as they walked but Davis still didn't tell her his name. "You want to be a tough one I see but home is not that way and you are lost, I can see it in your aimless walk." Diaz was an observant teen. "Let me take you again, then maybe you'll tell me your name in return." She insisted.

Davis knew no one else in the city. Besides, there was a very important question that he had to ask Lizzy. "No need for that. I am not going back there." Davis wasn't sure if he should pop up at Lizzy's doorstep again this night considering the events that transpired the previous one.

"Ow okay, where are you going then? I can still take you." Seems like she doesn't take no for an answer. "Have my number. Well, until you know your way around the city, let me be your tour guide." Diaz took out her phone to save his contact.

"I don't have a phone." Davis felt a little embarrassed.

"Ow. Okay then, the next time we meet I'll write it somewhere for you so that you can ask for a phone and call me whenever you need me. I'd like to help." She knew her way around anything.

"What's the deal with you anyway?" Davis started to worry.

"Nothing. I just wanna have a friend. That's all?"

"Okay then. On second thought, take me back there." Davis wasn't certain about this but he had nowhere else to go. That being a statement Lizzy was used to.

"I thought… Okay, okay let's go." Diaz took him back to Lizzy's place but Davis didn't tell him his name still. He went straight to Lizzy's door and knocked only to find that she wasn't home. He had no choice but to wait for her on her doorstep, unsure of her reaction.
