Chapter 7: Chapter 7, Prepare for the worst
I sat with my group while Sergeant Gilligan spoke to other Sergeant of another SOG group. I pasted my canteen after drinking to Kyle who took a sip.
Scully held his down taking a quiet sleep while Marshall taking a piss against a tree, Bucky chewed on a chocolate bar and Paul shouldered his weapon pacing back and forth.
Gillian walked back to us and said "Alright we're heading to a city, no major mission or anything just some r&r you boys earned it"
We were shocked we were given a day of rest for what feels like years but it was only a month into our service.
We were sent to one of the cities, I can't remember the name or let alone pronounce it, we were wearing our military uniforms but left our weapons back at the nearby bases.
We went for drinks but I ordered a cola since I wanted to keep a clear head while my friends drink up.
"Wooo!" Paul let out as he danced with some of the women while Kyle was trying some food. Scully drink with Marshall while Bucky was busy throwing up his MRE in a trash can.
I smiled at them then set my bottle down and took out my journal as I begin to write.
February 7th, 1972.
'It's been a month in Vietnam and to be very honest I'm a bit sleepy, I've faced some odds but I survived right now our Sarge let out have a break not sure what our next job will be but either way you only gotta prepare for the worst, usually they say focus on the positive so I'm trying so far my friends have been the positive all of them including my buddy Jamie.
Still I only wonder if we're going to win this damn war or it'll end like Korea the nation begin split' I finish writing and put my journal away.
"Hey there G.I" I turned to face a Vietnamese woman as she just looked at me while biting her lip.
She wore civilian clothing the ones she wore were shorts and a white with some sandals, her hair was raven black and was tied back with a tie.
"Uh hi?" I said, "You looking for good time?" She asked "I show you good time" then she took my hand and lead me away.
I heard Paul saying "Yeah! Go get it Anthony!" He clapped his hands while Marshall was laughing.
Kyle shook his head and focused on his meal.
I lay on the bed staring at the ceiling with her hugging my side while she slept. I was more lost for words so I couldn't think of what to say, I got up from the bed pulling my pants on fixing my belt.
"You going so soon? I not good?" She asked me to which I just looked at her. To be fair she was very beautiful and seeing her use the bedsheet to cover herself made her more attractive.
"You were great...I'm just tired..What's your name?" I asked her "Call me Chau baby" Honestly I can tell from her speaking English wasn't her strong suit.
"Thanks listen I'm not sure how long I'm station here before I'm brought back I'll try to see you more Chau" I said then took out a piece of paper from my journal which I did my best to make a origami into a star then handed to her.
"I'll see you around Chau..Oh by the way I'm Anthony" I saw before walking out.
"G.I!" She shouted then I looked at her and to my surprise she held my uniform and kissed me on the lips then let me go.
"You live long G.I" Chau said then I resume walking out of the hotel then walked back to base.
Once I got back to base I caught with my group as we went to mess hall to grab food. "So what happened?" Bucky asked.
"She took me to a hotel and...we just you know" I asked eating my food while Scully picked his teeth "I see did you pay her?"
"She didn't ask for money, said her name was Chau I gave her a origami then she kissed me" I finished taking a sip of my drink then I noticed them just starting at me.
"What?" I asked, "My brother she's into you! that rare for us boys!" Paul said which caught me off guard.
I wasn't popular back in the States not even in my own school and now some Vietnamese lady likes me? "I see" I continue to eat "All I did say I'll visit her more"
"You ask her to marry ya?" Bucky asked which I begin to choke on my coffee "What?" I asked.
"My Mama said if your gonna deflower a lady you better marry her" "I'm still on duty we are all!" I said which Bucky shrugged.
"Mama knows best" He says.
Then Gillian sat with us eating "Alright boys hope your enjoying yourselves" He says "We are sir especially Anthony right here" Paul laughed.
"Yeah I saw him walk into a hotel with one of the women better hope you don't get the seven year itch" Gillian said as he begin laughing.
"Sarge what's our next move?" I asked, "Well we-" We all heard popping and screaming.
Everyone in the mess hall was confused and ran out to grab their weapons. One of the buildings exploded making glass break everywhere, I grabbed the nearest rifle.
I picked up an M16 rifle and ran to my unit as Gillian shouted "Alright! bastards got us with our pants down we need to set up a defense on the city! Marshall radio Command that we are under attack and need immediate support!"
"Yes sir!" Marshall shouted begin to radio back, "Paul I want you to use one of the buildings and fire on any advancing enemy troops, Bucky your with me, Scully, Kyle, Anthony and Marshall move!"
Paul ran into a house while the rest of us ran with the Sarge. I pointed out "Incoming!" I shouted as a Tank rolled out firing it's cannon into the city and begin to roll towards the city with the NVA.
Bucky hide behind a car firing his rifle while I supported him with suppressing fire. "Relocating!" I shouted and ran to seek a better firing spot with Scully following me.
Scully fire his shotgun into the chest of a NVA just as he tried to climb through the window. I turn and fired my rifle scaring off two Soldiers when they try to flank us.
My heart was beating into my chest hard and fast, I grit my teeth and aim my rifle out firing again.
I swore to my family I will not die in war like my Uncle did, I will come home I will survive.
